From The Thaiger High blood pressure has muscled its way to the top of the health pile, becoming the most common condition treated under Thailand’s universal healthcare services in 2023. That’s the latest from the National Health Security Office(NHSO), which has revealed the nation’s pulse. NHSO’s top doc, Jadet Thammathataree, spilt the beans on an eye-watering 99.7 billion baht budget allocated for the fiscal year 2023, set aside to care for the 47.727 million Thais who qualify for the gold card scheme. That adds up to a tidy sum of 3,385.98 baht per person. Breaking it down, 1,344.40 baht went to outpatient services, with inpatient care costi…

From Pattaya Mail Pattaya is a city with its fair share of foreign males who are past the first bloom of youth. So it’s hardly surprising that a seminar on prostate problems and erectile dysfunction attracted a full house on June 7 at the resort’s most popular private hospital. The joint speakers were prosthesis surgeons and urologists Dr Niti Navanimitkul and Assistant Professor Dr Yossak Sakulchaiyakorn who managed to incorporate humor and empathy into what might appear to be dry subjects. About half of all men start to feel the symptoms of an enlarged prostate as early as age 50, but they rise to around eighty percent for guys in their 80s. There is no doubt …

From BBC The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the first diagnostic test for mpox where the results can be immediately known, saying it could prove pivotal in helping to stop the rising global cases of the deadly virus. The new PCR test enables the detection of the mpox DNA taken from skin lesion swabs. Currently, samples have to be sent to a laboratory for testing and the patient and medics have to wait days for the result. Limited testing capacity and delays in confirming cases continue to be a challenge in Africa - worsening the spread of mpox that was previously known as monkeypox. Of the more than 30,000 susp…

I attended a medical lecture regarding the RSV vaccine 2 weeks ago, and it wasn't extremely encouraging. There is some data potential recipients should know before agreeing to the vaccine (we're talking about the 60+ group, not for infants or pregnant mothers, which is a different kettle of fish). The absolute risk reduction to prevent one lower respiratory (lung) infection in adults is 0.26% (need to immunize 385 to prevent one serious infection), and the absolute risk reduction to prevent one hospitalization is 0.13% (need to immunize 770 to prevent one hospitalization). There was no significant difference in death. Also, muscle aches and flu-like symptoms were common, …

The following article was posted on the National Public Radio (US) website last year. It examines a lot of contributing factors, some of which we have control over--food, alcohol, sleep aids and pre-flight preparations. It also looks those we have little or no influence over. It may not change your life but it may affect how you feel after arriving. From NPR If you're trying to squeeze some travel into the last few weeks of summer, you'll want to get the most out of your vacation. And nothing ruins a trip to the Louvre or a scuba-diving excursion like your body telling you it's time for bed NOW. So can you "hack" jet lag, so to speak? Or at least mitigate it? …

From Thai PBS World As we get older, our bodies change. Fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet are among the most visible signs although thinning hair, metabolic changes that affect weight, muscle loss and vision problems are also indicators of growing older. But not all is lost. Experts say we can slow the biological aging process and thus minimize the effects of certain diseases and conditions that come with age. One of the natural approaches we can adopt to help us look younger, feel energized and enjoy our golden years is getting healthy quality sleep. “Just like eating a healthy diet and regularly exercising, consistent, high-quality sleep is…

In this topic: diapers & condom catheters are discussed, because I didn’t want to go off topic in the cinema topic, I started this topic. The leg bag shown in the picture is a small 25 cl leg bag (about eight ounce) is meant for small leaks, for example when you sneeze, cough or laugh, drips you loose before &/or after you empty your bladder. This small leg bag is NOT meant to empty a full bladder. If you want to empty a full bladder, you’ll probably need a large 1 Liter leg bag (about 34 ounce). When I started using (large) leg bags & diapers because of functional incontinence, the first days it wasn’t easy at all for me to …

Hello Everyone, I was recently diagnosed with gonococcal arthritis. It was the most unbearable pain I have ever had in my life. Plus they also did a surgery on my right knee to extract cultures, that one was hurting the most. Currently, I am on IV antibiotics. I cannot walk. I use a walker to go to restroom. The pain is there but better. I do take prescribed pain medication. This whole experience has traumatized me. Please tell me it will get better. I just wanna go back to normal walking and my life. From what I read this is supposed to be a rare side effect of gonorrhea. Sadly, I had to get it.

From CNBC Supplements that claim to improve appearance have grown in popularity in the past decade. From 2011 to 2020, the percentage of Americans who reported taking a hair, skin and nail vitamin in the past month rose from 2.5% to 4.9%. But experts warn about side effects and dangers. Skin, hair and nail supplements often contain much more biotin than the human body needs, for example, a research paper published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology has found. High doses of biotin “can alter test results that healthcare providers may order, like thyroid testing, cardiac testing [and] potentially even vitamin D testing,” Dr. Rebecc…
