The Ritz

Recommended Posts

The Ritz is a play at Studio 54. It is starring Rosie Perez and Ryan Idol. Ryan is hot and actually does a nice job. Remember him? The porn star. He has really gone full circle and I was happy to see him do a nice job in this. The play is old but the laughter is contagious. The premise behind the play for those of you that have not seen it is on his deathbed, an Italian Mafia guy asks his family to kill a guy. The guy is the husband of his only daughter. After the funeral, he hides from him in a gay bathhouse. The cast of characters and the skin of the boys in towels is constant eye candy. I really enjoyed the show. It is currently playing in NYC at Studio 54.

It still is playing in NYC at Studio 54 as it is one of the plays not affected by the strike. Given Oz's taste in young flesh, I am surprised that he only talks about Ryan Idol. There is another character, who has no lines, but lightens up the stage with his beautiful blond surfer boy looks. Everytime he goes in the steamroom, he drops his towel, giving the audience a look at his beautiful bubble butt. At the end of the show, he does a go-go routine that is fabulous.

At the performance I saw, they were collecting for Broadway Cares after the show. The blond was one of the collectors, and, even though he had covered up the skimpy briefs he wore on stage, he still was barechested and beautiful. So, in the spirit of giving, I gave him a dollar as I would any other hot go--go boy.

I guess if we keep doing theater reviews, we may have to also branch out into book reviews. But, for now, keep your eye out for the newest musical coming to Broadway: On The Townie! It's based on the book by a group of conventioneers at a paper convention in Chicago. Boy, do they ever cut loose!

The critics said the present incarnation of The Ritz retained all the original period references intact. I wondered how many people today would react at all to, for example, names like Tex Antoine, Yma Sumac and Zinka Milanov.

Now I guess I understand. The Ritz has been turned into an ass show, and apparently works just fine on that level. The references are irrelevant, except to whatever cackling crones miight be in the audience at any time. Pragmatism is everything.

The night I went it was filled with more older theatre goers than the younger crowd. I didn't get all the references and neither did the young men with me but we all enjoyed it as well. I do wish I had known more of the references.

I found several of the guys sexy but Ryan was one of the first gay videos I was into. Jeff Stryker was another one and I saw him in Making Porn and loved it as well. Yes, they have aged but aged well. ^_^

My first crush was on Elizabeth Taylor and to this day, she is still the most beautiful woman on earth. Jolie is a close second but Liz has my straight heart.

I just wonder if the movie could be remade in todays hollywood?

Was this Treat Williams film debut? And wasn;t there an ass shot of him?

The original movie was a pallid version of the stage play. I think it was done strictly to preserve the performance of the brilliant Rita Moreno. Fortunately, it also gave us F. Murray Abraham in an atypical role, and Jerry Stiller, who at the time was best known for being Ann Meara's straight man.

It was Treat Williams's second movie. He was cuter than the law allows, and I lusted for him mightily. I don't remember an ass shot. Even Abraham looked better in just a towel than I expected.

As for a present-day remake, why not? It would have to be a version of what the play has turned into, feature acres of beefcake and be prepared to appeal to a specialized audience. Movies have been made on slenderer premises than that. How much money they have made is another subject.
