yesterday It rained on and off all day and I ended up sleeping in past 2:00 pm, after getting up at 7:00 a.m. to let my friend leave. I needed it! If I lived in Miami I would probably come here once a month for week at a time, SoCAl is just too long a trip(15 hrs.) to do it more than 4 times a year for a body that is almost as old as LUCKY'S!!

while it's a great country with a world class economy, it's still in many ways a 3rd world country with associated issues, I like the comfortablility of knowing well how my laws/rules/rights work. Tonight is my last night in Rio and I just got back to the apt. It is almost 1:00 a.m. and I am not having anyone sleep over tonight, I need a good night's sleep! TomasCal, I like your response to the above. I, a few years back, had the mighty urge to retire in Rio de janeiro, but because I know very, very, very Brasilian Portugese, have no friends at all in that city, no support base, and a few other factors, I chose NOT to leave the US but to stay retired in California and to travel elsewhere as much as possible.

On Sunday my last day in Rio, I had a late checkout of the apartment at 4:00pm

and as most international flights go out late evening so that gives you 4 or 5 hours to hang somewhere, I always choose to hang at the saunas!

I either take my luggage to the sauna and check it with the locker attendent if I am going to 117 or Meo Mundo. If I am going to Pointe I take it to the Atlantico Hotel which is only about 3 blocks from pointe sauna and check it with the bellman, because there is about 30 steps up to the front door of Pointe which makes it to difficult to carry luggage up.

I got to pointe about 4:30 and there were already about a dozen guys there, by 6:00 there were about 20+, given that Sunday nights are one of the worse nights this was not a bad turnout. I met up with the 19yr old from Meo Mundo who showed up at 5:00 even thou he doesn't work at Pointe normally. About 6:30 the handsome guy with the great smile showed up and we spent the next two hours together and than I had to head out to the airport.

A couple of observations:

The saunas this trip were as good and as busy as anytime I have visited in the past 11 years.

The most guys were working at Meo Mundo and on Mondays and Fridays were the busiest.

This trip I spent the least time of any trip at 117. This has always been one of my favorite saunas, but this trip I went twice and both times did nothing!(another record for me!) The vast majority on both nights I went were steriod muscle guys which are not the type i prefer. Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but it is my understanding that the boys pay an entrance fee to the saunas. The saunas make their money from room rentals, "kit" sales (condom/lube) and food/beverage sales in addition to entrance fees from customers

Lurker is right in how the saunas make their money. While Prostitution is legal in Brazil, making money off of it is Illegal except for the prostitutes! that's why there are no pimps and why the saunas have nothing to do with the money exchange between the clients and the working guys. The saunas charge $10R admission to the boys and $25. to $35.R for customers.

Meio Mundo has fees for the kit and sheet, if you go to one of the free cabines. One of the nicer, newer rooms,some even have the red cavalos(or horses) go from 15Reais and up. But most are priced at 20Reais and 25 Reais, which does include the kit/lube&condom and lencol/sheet.

If it is a night with a well-attended show/bingo with good prizes, they seem to do very well on food and beverage. I was there for some party and they ran out of the prepared dinners quite early, ditto on popcorn. Normally, two or three tables in the American Bar are reserved and those clients/guests seem to consume quite a bit more as they are partying more than looking to hook-up. Lots of ice buckets with towers of iced beers and champagne.

The guys pay 10Reais entry. Strippers pay nothing to enter. Normal working guys dancing for their entry. And on the window between the locker room and the entrance desk there is a sign informing the boys of a monthly maintenance fee which is around the middle of the second week of the month. If memory serves, it is about 10Reais. Not sure what this is for. I never remember to ask any of the guys.

From what I heard from a boy in Meio Mundo, there is also a system of fines: in Meio Mundo, since monday is the busiest night, in addition to the entrance fee, the boy coming on monday has obligation to come two other nights the same week, or else the boy is fined, I think 20 Reais.

I also remember that I saw in Meio Mundo a poster saying that "the maintenance fee for the month of December is to be paid before ...", meaning that the boys may have to pay some global monthly fee to come to the sauna.

It is the same in the sauna in Porto Alegre. One day, we stayed late and one of the boys stayed with us. He explained me that he had to stay that day until at least 10.30 pm, orelse he would be fined.

The situation is also the same in Prague: in the clubs, the boys have to be present. In Escape, they "work" (even though they are not paid) six nights a week. If they want to leave earlier than 1 or 2 am, they are charged 1000 or 2000 Kr (50 or 100 USD). If they want to be away for the week end, the fine is at least 5000 Kr (250 USD). For Sylvester (December 31st), the boys could be away, but they were fined 20000 Kr, which is a totally stupid amount of 1000 $. But as a matter of fact, most of the boys were present that night.
