America's disappearing Gay Bars...interesting article

Recommended Posts

The gay bar scene is disappearing all over the world. It has been a slow death. But, I think as acceptance of gays has become more common and the ease gays have for meeting other gays (online), the gay bar scene is less relevant. When I first moved to NYC, there was a bar for blacks, a bar for bears, a bar for leather, a bar for twinks, etc. Naturally, I looked very odd in the black bar and the twink bars. LOL But, I did meet some great guys. Oh, and lets not forget the hooker bars. I loved them but they faded out years back as many escorts took to the Internet.

OZ, Bar Mixx in Porto Alegre is one of the last hooker bars left in the world and is still in operation and doing well, I was there about 3 weeks ago and there were about 35 "working" guys on Friday night! a lot of fun!

When I first moved to SoCal 20 years ago there were so many Gay bars. In the city I live in there were five, now there is one-and it survives by doing Karaoke contests 3 nights a week to mostly straight crowd,

The demise of the bars in WeHo makes me so sad. There used to be four Gay bars east of La Cienega now there is one. There used to be bars off of SMB none survive, The bars on SMB are dying a slow painful death,You can't pay the rent on one or two good nights a week. And of course all of the bars for those looking to hire are gone.

As a result of this I find myself not going out anywhere close to what I did in the past. Whn I do go into WeHo I usually hang out at a coffee shop and watch the passing parade from there. I miss the old days-I miss them a lot

That is sad to hear. Thirty years ago there were at let three gay bars in Garden Grove in OC. I remember a luscious boy in leather pants and no shirt dancing in Rumor Hazzit.
