What's Everyone Been Up To?

I semi-retired the end of June and moved from San Diego. I spend 70% of my time in Portland and 25% in Salt Lake City. My company pays me to work 1 week per month in San Diego. They pay airfare and hotel and I earn the maximum monthly amount I'm allowed without hurting my Social Security.

The San Diego project is currently $1.5 billion and, for political reasons, my continued involvement is adventitious to the company since it is partially funded by the federal government. Still showing me as an active employee satisfies the fed requirement. I've got a sweet deal.

Leave on Sunday for San Diego. Airline has already upgraded me to 1st class for free so it will be a nice trip.

Fall is always a busy time for me. Too much business travel. Never a dull moment. Halloween. Thanksgiving. And then Christmas. I hate how these weeks just fly by. My DVR is bursting at the seams. Too much to catch up on. Will have to let some things go.

That is awesome. And the works isn't too hard I'm guessing?

When I showed up last month my replacement (a junior guy that is way underpaid) had a "to do" list for me of things I needed to accomplish that week. Took all the pressure off me and I completed his checklist before coming home. FYI, before "promoting" the junior guy, I interviewed several guys for my replacement. Their salary requirements were TWICE what I was making and they had no specific experience in our specific work area. They were well-qualified on using the software but they didn't know our industry.

The junior guy we promoted is doing such a great job and is making half of my salary. Trying my best to continue mentoring him and making sure management is aware of the great job he is doing. Like I said before, I've got a really sweet deal and don't mind him now being my boss. I make sure he's in charge and certainly don't try to second guess his decisions the 1 week I'm at work. We seem to have a great relationship. He doesn't call often but when he runs into a issue he'll ask my opinion. I feel he respects me and appreciates that I make sure everyone knows the throne has shifted from me to him.
