Your Five Favourite Books - And Why?
Pete1111 replied to PeterRS's topic in Theater, Movies, Art and Literature
@PeterRS I could go on and on how much the movie omitted. Aciman tells us how Elio must be an extremely attractive boy, on the cusp of becoming a man, and how Oliver represented everything a teenage boy like Elio would look up to. Really, everyone liked Oliver. They had a nickname for him, the movie star. Elio recalled a missed opportunity when he had been in Rome wondering around, how he drew interest from young men that found Elio quite fetching, and how one kept his arm around Elio, not wanting to let go, even after Elio turned him down. It is no wonder how Oliver fell for Elio and how Elio pined for Oliver. Even the little girl from next door confronted Elio how she could tell how much Oliver liked him. Oliver's challenge in the book was how to tell a teenager you love him. He tried twice. Much of that angst was missing from the movie. I get it. That's what happens when a screenplay is adapted. Yet, if the casting had got the ages right, the movie would have worked more than it did. -
Your Five Favourite Books - And Why?

I have a copy of The Brothers Karamazov. At some point I'll read it. That it's a translation reminds me how translation can have an effect. I took part in on-line debates regarding Elio and Oliver in Call Me by Your Name and am convinced some of the disagreements on what really happened stemmed from the translation into French or Spanish editions read by members of that group. -

@stevenkesslar The Kremlin needs to keep the Nazi narrative alive to deflect focusing on the genocides Russia committed in Poland, Ukraine, Finland and elsewhere, before, during and after WWII.
-
Poland and the rest of the world know Russia committed genocide at Katyn during WWII, where 22,000 Poles were murdered. Originally, Russia claimed the Nazis were responsible. Over the decades since WWII Russians had taken responsibility yet the Kremlin has continued to float the idea that Nazis were the culprits and also disavowed the terrible nature of the war crimes. This is their wretched nature, now continuing under Genocide Man.

You're all so clever, aren't you? You woke guys and the Lincoln Project. But the MAGA troops know what's important. They owned the libs!!!

Does knowing our Sec. of Defense was a weekend talk show host and knowing he doesn't bother to follow basic rules for secure communication bother anyone? I ask this in light of how Russia's bumbling defense isn't able to stop Ukraine's weapons from inflicting recent, widespread losses all across their homeland. How safe are we when the Pentagon is helmed by such a lightweight?

If Putin doesn't take a break from getting his cock sucked by Trump, murdering Ukrainians, sending Russian soldiers to die, assassinating journalists and political opponents, and ruining the Russian economy, he will end up like Romanian tyrant Ceausescu.

Dutch Ernst is not going to heaven, for the millions she accepted from the NRA, and her gun voting record.

She has always been weird. IMO, she needs a girlfriend to hop on her Harley with, and bring along a deluxe vibrator.

New York Times article on the drone attacks that hit Russia also detailed more attacks by Genocide Man on Ukrainian cities and at least one military base inside Ukraine. Large-Scale Ukrainian Attack Targets Air Bases in Russia Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Sunday that Ukrainian drones attacked airfields in five regions and that several aircraft had caught fire. ....... The Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian airfields came as Kyiv suffered a damaging blow of its own on Sunday, with Russia striking a Ukrainian military training base and killing at least 12 soldiers. ....... Several aircraft caught fire in the regions of Murmansk, near the border with Norway, and Irkutsk, in eastern Siberia, ...... “Today will later be called a black day for Russian long-range aviation,” read a post on the Telegram channel called Fighterbomber, which is believed to be run by Capt. Ilya Tumanov of the Russian Army. A BBC article below reminds that Trump's claim how Zelensky does not hold any cards, was premature. Ukraine and Russia are scheduled to meet again tomorrow for peace talks. In the meantime...... Yesterday, Ukraine hit bases inside Russia, destroying 1/3 of Russia's bombers, according to Adam Kinzinger's Substack. Kinzinger emphasized how significant was the success of these attacks inside Russia. https://substack.com/@adamkinzinger/note/c-121948233 https://youtu.be/YW6fLddxdOo?si=NhU9l1NzNSk9X08H&t=52 This comes after deadly Russian train crashes caused by bridge collapse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlnfTaYGdWw When will Russians start to blame Genocide Man, how he drains his country to fight Ukraine?

He disrespects America, but gives N. Korea and Russia an anal tongue bath. Did he even salute the door man? What a joke of a president.

He invaded Arlington Cemetery to produce a campaign ad (which is never allowed out of respect for those that died serving). So his excessive preoccupation with himself and no one else leads to this lack of respect for those that served and those currently in harms way. If I had a son or daughter serving right now, I would be extra concerned. What must be going through the minds of those graduating cadets, when at the podium is a president who consistently lies, cheats and steals? Sadly, many in the military may not understand where Trump is taking them.

Looking at the list of who he's pardoned, it's worrisome. These are people that did the insurrection, the guys that planned to kidnap Whitmer, people that cheated on their taxes and stole from others, folks that made big donations to Trumps campaign, etc. Of course mostly white people. This is what a fascist does.

Government ethics? Didn't Trump get rid of all the Inspectors General? These days Washington is about as ethical as Hedley Lamarr.

This has NOTHING TO DO WITH TARIFFS. BE PATIENT!!!
Pete1111 replied to stevenkesslar's topic in Politics
Having an economy that thrives on undocumented workers is like apartheid. No argument from me, except that I'm questioning why react now after decades of living off the fruits of their labor? Why turn on them like is happening? Trump claimed he would get rid of the bad element, and not all undocumented workers. I know, why should we believe him? But either way, Trump is fucking up what has been working by establishing tariffs, by deporting workers, by growing the billionaire class, by pissing on our neighbors, our friends, our allies... -

Trump is deporting the cheapest segment of US labor, which gradually moves the social security fund closer to insolvency (workers paying into the fund that will never collect). How will the economic engine work if cheapest labor slips away? Oh right, tariffs. So much $$ coming in. 🤣 -

When Nicolae Ceaușescu's corrupt regime fell in Romania, decades ago, the Romanian royals returned from exile and supported transition to an elected government. An interesting video of that history is attached below, showing the lead-up to Ceausescu's execution. There are other videos on YouTube showing the opulent, decedent lifestyle the Ceaușescu family lived within their mansion, in contrast to the poverty, food shortages, malnutrition and high infant mortality rates suffered during his rule. After watching, I thought how the world has changed since then! The hope and optimism after the fall of the iron curtain has been replaced. Autocratic leadership has regained and strengthened its authoritarian power. Hungary, Turkey, Belarus, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, and even to some extent in Israel and the US. It's sad. Mickey 17 is currently on HBO. The political aspect parallels our current incompetency and greed in Washington. Robert Pattinson was good. I'm not a huge Sci Fi fan but overall a decent movie.

NYT interviewed an undecided voter in Ohio that leaned towards Trump because she assumed he would deliver on healthcare and education. She was a nurse with young children. Bless their hearts, Americans give it their best try when they vote. (Too bad the NYT went radio silent on that Ohio nurse's misguided healthcare/education voting strategy.) Yeah, time for voters to eat the cake and shut up. Let's see how the midterms go. Until then, suck it up buttercup.

@stevenkesslarHow confident are you that Republican candidates will get slaughtered? I'm flummoxed how many "educated" people believe cutting taxes on the wealthy is a sound strategy. To me, it's as if they believe a strong economy hinges on growing the billionaire class. America has many mega-yachts that still need a home. 😉 I'm very cynical these days and stopped having faith in polls. I sense many working class voters will continue to "own the libs" next election and continue demonizing undocumented immigrants.

I recall during the 2020 campaign hearing how Biden would only serve one term. Perhaps his team was gaslighting us. My only positive thought back then was the idea that Biden was the only candidate able to beat Trump, or so we were told. Perhaps that was more gaslighting. Looking back over the decades, I contemplate how much better off we'd be with alternate choices. I did not like Bill Clinton or Joe Biden. Looking ahead, will the Democrats learn anything from past mistakes and from these recent books? I question whether a workable strategy exists.
