February 2, 20242 yr Enjoyed the video and the narrators. My experiences of staying in the area was between 2003-2009 when I was a devotee of the legendary Babylon, about a 10-15 minute walk away. I stayed either at the Pinnacle or Malaysia hotels and had no complaints about either. At the Pinnacle I used to book through a local guy who lived in the hotel (think Jimmy was his name) who could save you a few hundred baht a night. I don't recall the area being a hippe ghetto it was in the 80's and 90's and never recall feeling unsafe walking around. But once Babylon began losing its allure, I began staying primarily in the Silom area.

I really miss the Babylon (the old one at the beginning of the road, now an apartment house and of course the new Babylon). The Pinnacle had a quite high gay factor during those days. From time to time I still book Pinnacle the have a confirmed homebase from where I do some trips around BKK and Hua Hin because it's so cheap. Pinnacle is a bit ran down nowadays, but still ok for that purpose. I had never the impression of a hippy ghetto though.

I was late to meet friends for lunch and hopped on a motor bike taxi at the subway station and said "Le Bouchon" and he said "oh, you mean Babylon".

He missed a couple of points though Malaysia was indeed built for R.&R. for U.S. Vietnam troops BUT only for the officers. They built a condo block behind, for the lower ranks --Pitak Court. Close to Pitak was a small restaurant frequented by the King and Queen of Sweden when they came here on their scouting Jamborees. At the entrance to the Malaysia carpark and part of the hotel, was a large Issan Music Bar. Live Issan music and usually packed solid. Many bar boys. They later converted it into a massage area (straight). For years, the carpark was busy with freelancers plying their trade. The video mentioned Wong's Bar, still there and frequented by several Soi4 customers.
