June 24, 20242 yr Why is it that only the DR and sometimes Cuba r mentioned here? Don't foreign gays flock to other Caribbean destinations, such as Jamaica? M planning a trip there. Could anyone pls enlighten me about the scene..... ?
June 24, 20242 yr Active Members One of the aspects of the Caribbean that's so rewarding is that there's such a myriad of highly different cultures in close proximity. Jamaica is the most homophobic country in the Western Hemisphere. One can practically swim from Dominica to Guadeloupe, but the laws, culture, language, and attitudes are completely different. People get killed in Jamaica over even the suspicion of being a member of the LGBT+ community. Jamaica is one of the few countries in the Western Hemisphere I haven't visited, and the only way I can imagine going there might be on a tour excursion off of a cruise ship. Hate towards the LGBT+ community is highly ingrained into Jamaican culture, probably even more so than in many Muslim countries. The best advice is to stay clear.
June 25, 20242 yr A lot of islands are super homophobic, and Jamaica is one of the worst, like Unicorn mentioned. I've been there a few times, on cruises....if you're going to stay in an all inclusive and enjoy the beach, fine....looking for hookups, HA, good luck. Bahamas is another poor place, unless you hook up with a crewmember from a ship or another tourist I guess.

June 25, 20242 yr I was there with my son on a cruise excursion to the waterfalls. We also kayaked across the water. I felt extremely nervous any time I was near the general population. The guides and the other tourists were fine, but the locals were incredibly intense. Almost all their interactions (mostly with each other) seemed on the edge of violence. I would never go back. I did not see any evidence of laid back stereotypical Jamaicans. There was nothing in my appearance and I was traveling with my 10 year old that would have given any impression that I might be gay. So that wasn’t part of my extremely negative experience in Jamaica. Again, the guides and the other tourists were fine. I was so relieved to get back on the boat without becoming a victim of violence.
June 25, 20242 yr Author M ashamed of my ignorance. Strange that there r links to gayfriendly hotels. Interesting the difference btw these islands and DR / cuba. Guess it has something to do with pre-colonial culture variety.
June 25, 20242 yr Active Members While there are variations, in general, if the people on the Caribbean island drive on the right, you're probably fine. If they drive on the left, be careful.
June 29, 20242 yr I lived for several years in the small islands of the southern Carribean and even though these Islands are supposedly gayfriendly i was terribly bored sexually
