I liked the bills with his father on them, they had the denomination in decimal format on both sides, the new kings bills are only n one side.

look again, on old king  bills  decimal on reverse was in upper right corner, on new king decimal is on the center left side . I just checked, Stamps are not only thing I collect, sigh.

More helpful would be counters with staff or automated machines that can change 1000 baht notes to 100 baht notes.

I always need lots of 100 baht notes for tips.

I don't really like to ask mamasan in bar to exchange notes because mamasan will know how much I have.

I agree! And not only that, but apart from 7-11, I always feel like a dick if I have to pay for something relatively small with a 1000 baht note.

techniques to obtain ' red' I employ are  :

- on arrival at Swampy  buying 45 baht token for ARL at the counter and paying with 1000 baht note

-when exchanging money asking to give me 2000-3000 in hundreds  , sometimes it works , sometimes  not, never hurts to try. XOne often obliges

- when buying something  trying to pay with 1000 or 500 note , even if that's just beer or KY

-topping up Rabbit card with 100 baht but paying with 1000.

In bars though I prefer to pay with exact  change as I know few cases / not mine fortunately  / when change from 1000 was given  like only 500 baht was received from customer

Most hotel front desks are happy to provide small bills? Some keep stacks of exactly ten 100 baht bills ready to hand out, or even offer different denominations 100 50 20 so you can easily tip their staff or pay for taxi. Only downside to this is bellboys expectantly hovering once they see you getting small notes.

if I forget at the hotel I avail of 7-11 or Foodland

100%
I also feel like I have to tip mamasan for their help so 1000 instantly becomes 900 which is a very poor exchange rate

I'd tip him 20 baht , after all he is not parading in his underwear for all to see like bar boys so why treat him the same tip wise? The same waiter who brings me drink. 20 baht and thank you. Red noted are for boys only , preferably to tuck in their briefs or even better , to wrap around their thingy when they do their big c***k show

Entirely correct but mamasan has cleverly only delivered 100 baht notes, and sticks his hand out for 100 baht tip. I have been outwitted by mamasans more times than I can count.

I always  have few 20's in my pocket , exactly to deal with extortion attempts by mamasans and waiters. When at Freshboys , as they have habit, they give as change  about 100 baht in coins , I pocket all of them and give them back that coveted green note

Yes, you just have to be firm with them because what they're doing is disingenuous and they're counting on you to be a pushover. Alternatively, if you have a Thai bank app, use that to pay, and leave them the tip in cash. Some home bank apps may even work internationally. I just make sure that the account to which the app is linked has a limited amount of money in it and/or that I have restricted the app's daily spending limit to a certain amount.

I see why, the new king money, the denomination isn't bold and is tough to see at dark places, restaurants, bars, etc...I'm always flipping the bills around like a blind man whereas it was much easier to see with the old bills.... or maybe I'm just older now and becoming a blind man 🤓

Note you posted above is 2020 coronation commemorative note , rarely seen in circulation ( I got it only once in a change ) .

Commonly circulated note is pictured below

I assume plastic note looks the same , just has transparent window in place of watermark ( visible below ) on paper one

I must say, I really despise plastic notes — purely because of how they feel in your hand. It always annoys me when I go to the UK and have to handle them - it actually encourages me to use my debit card there instead.

It’s also frustrating to know I’ll have to deal with them the next time I go to Thailand, since I tend to be much more cash‑based when I’m there.

At least the euros we use in Ireland are still paper notes… though I’ve heard a rumour that the next time they update them, they’ll be plastic as well.😒

apart from UK avoid Canada, Eastern Caribbean , Jamaica, Barbados , Romania, Chile, Falkland Islands (very recent convert),   Australia, New Zealand and most South Pacific Ocean countries.

Even Paraguay, Egypt, Libya , Angola, Emirates, Saudi Arabia , Malaysia, Singapore , Mexico, Vietnam , Nigeria and scores others ( full list on request. lol ) have one or more denominations in plastic.
