From Khmer Times Artist's impression courtesy of Ministry of Information Stretching 151.6 kilometers from the Bassac River near Phnom Penh to the coastal province of Kep, the canal will create a new inland waterway-maritime corridor capable of handling vessels up to 3,000 deadweight tons (DWT). Recently completed my first trip to Cambodia. I absolutely loved it, so here are a few highlights, starting with 6 days in Siem Reap. I traveled over land from Bangkok by train to Aranya Prathet. The train is 3rd class only, so it was a warm and dusty affair, but really cheap. I forgot the exact price, but less than 100 baht for the train ticket. There are two trains a day - one early morning and one around 1 pm. Train departs from the old Bangkok Central Station and is scheduled to take 4,5 hours, but I was warned that there were often delays. I was on the afternoon train and it was only about an hour late, so I had time to cross the border at Poi Pet before …

From Phnom Penh Posr Cambodia is set to mark a significant milestone in its aviation sector with the launch of Techo International Airport (TIA) in July 2025. Designed as both a major passenger gateway and a strategic cargo hub, the airport is poised to enhance the country’s connectivity and economic growth. Located about 20 kilometers south of Phnom Penh in Kandal and Takeo provinces, the 2,600-hectare facility — developed through a $1.5 billion investment — aims to position Cambodia as a key logistics and aviation hub in Southeast Asia. Cambodia is set to mark a significant milestone in its aviation sector with the launch of Techo Interna…

From Associated Press BY SOPHENG CHEANG PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Archaeologists in Cambodia are celebrating an unexpected find at the country’s centuries-old Angkor temple complex: the torso of a statue of Buddha that matches a head found nearly a century ago at the same site. The torso, believed to be from the 12th or 13th century, was discovered during a dig by a team of Cambodian and Indian experts last month at Angkor’s Ta Prohm temple. It was found along with 29 fragments that appeared to be part of the same statue, archaeologist Neth Simon said this week. It stands at 1.16 meters (3 3/4 feet) tall and is in th…

I had e-visa so immigration was breeze. I exchanged some money into riels as airport rates are only minimally lower than city ones ( 4000 vs 4065 for 1 USD). Some people don’t bother and are using dollars since Cambodia is practically dual currency country and is not unusual to pay 10 $ invoice with 6$ and 16000 riels ( 4 $) for example. Some places are quoting prices in riels , other in…

  8. How are Space Bar and Toolbox early in the week? Do they tend to be better since the guys are less busy with tourists, given that bars are usually slower from Monday to Thursday? Or are they worse because fewer guys are scheduled to work?

From MSN The Cambodian government decided to reduce e-visa fees for tourists and businesses or ordinary people from January 2025. It said in a news release on Dec. 28 that the fee for tourist type (e-visa T) would be slashed to $30 from the current $36 while that for regular type (e-visa E) would be lowered to $35 from the current $42. Cambodia is expected to welcome around 6.7 million foreign visitors and 22 million domestic tourists this year, surpassing the numbers recorded before the Covid pandemic in 2019.

I spent a week in PP catching up with a Canadian friend and we visited a lot of the specified places together. I have tried to be as factual as possible and I’d like to thank FloridaRob, vinapu and Harrystiilees for the info they gave me before my trip. A few general observations: Since my last visit 10 years ago, the traffic seems to have increased dramatically and certainly the car is king here. Be very careful crossing roads as some traffic do not adhere to traffic lights and pavements in many parts of the city are non existent. I felt safe wandering around the city but do ensure that you have enough lower denomination dollar notes as higher denominations can be d…

Took the afternoon "deluxe" bus from Siem Reap to PP, got a good night rest so was better than having to wake up and rush to the 7 or 8am bus. 6 boring hours with lots of horn honking, bit a smooth ride otherwise with a food option half way thru the trip, not bad for $15usd. Vet air bus express, they have vans or busses, it's recommended to take the bus, more comfortable. Staying at the same hotel I stayed at my only other time here, 10 yrs ago, how times flies. Silver mounts hotel, VERY basic but great location, clean, quiet, free b'fast, no buffet today so choice to order off the menu and no problems with guests, at b'fast there was an older guy with a local guy an…

From Fintech News The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) has launched the Bakong Tourists app in collaboration with Mastercard at a ceremony in Phnom Penh. The app simplifies digital payments for international tourists visiting Cambodia. Tourists can download the app upon arrival and seamlessly top up their Bakong accounts using their Mastercard issued in their home countries. This allows them to scan KHQR codes and pay at over 3.3 million merchants across Cambodia, a major advantage in a country where only 60,000 POS machines accept card payments. The app is available for download on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

From The Jurist The Cambodian government Friday approved a draft law that aims to punish those who ignore, minimize or deny the crimes committed by the communist regime between 1975 and 1979. Under the revised law, the civil penalty for genocide denial will now be increased to one to five years imprisonment and 10 million to 50 million riels (USD $2480 to $12,400). The draft law is an amendment to the original 2013 anti-genocide denial law. The original law enforced a punishment of six months to two years imprisonment and a fine of 1 million to 4 million riels (USD$248 to $992). The announcement of the draft law comes 50 years after the Khmer Rouge seized p…

From VOA Six critically endangered Mekong giant catfish — one of the largest and rarest freshwater fish in the world — were caught and released recently in Cambodia, reviving hopes for the survival of the species. The underwater giants can grow up to 10 feet (3 meters) long and weigh up to 300 kilograms (661 pounds), or as heavy as a grand piano. They now are found only in Southeast Asia's Mekong River but in the past inhabited the length of the 4,900-kilometer (3,044-mile) river, all the way from its outlet in Vietnam to its northern reaches in China's Yunnan province. The species' population has plummeted by 80% in recent decades because of rising p…

From Pattaya Mail By Barry Kenyon Although Cambodia can be the cheapest of the tourist destinations in south east Asia, the authorities are heavily promoting bespoke packages for the truly wealthy. Chhay Sivlin, president of the main travel agents’ association, told the Khmer Times that the country isn’t just for backpackers and economy travellers. The UK Times newspaper seems to agree, recently ranking Cambodia as 13th in its list of 23 best luxury destinations. Several international companies, such as Jacada and Lux, have sprung up to cater for the new Cambodian market. They are promoting private islands such as Song Saa, a 45-minutes speedboat ride from …

From Pattaya Mail By Barry Kenyon PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – If you think Pattaya is a city in transition, take a look at Cambodia’s capital. Twenty already completed condominiums and many more work-in-progress office tower blocks are changing the skyline in an apparently unending concrete revolution. Cement mixers and cranes don’t know the festive season has arrived as workers struggle 24/7 to complete a luxury, 500-room hotel before the Chinese investors arrive next month. Pop music tries to drown out the sound of drills. Phnom Penh still has its fair share of western tourists as well as visa runners, most…

AirAsia was 30 minutes delayed, no one seemed to mind, what a difference to the US, lol Grab was about 30usd from Siam Reap airport to hotel when I checked ahead of time, hotel offered pickup for 35usd, was def better to have someone waiting, I did advise them of the delay. Hotel recommended by @vinapu is 100% great, so far....I'd say is 5* service and comfortable rooms walking distance to everything, about $40usd a night all in with breakfast, king bed with balcony, I'd stay here again in a he…

From Bangkok Post Cambodia has agreed with the Thai government's initiative to facilitate cross-border travel for tourists from six countries in the region through a single visa policy called "6 Countries, 1 Destination", positioning Thailand as a regional tourism hub, according to a source at Government House. The move came after talks between Cambodian Minister of Tourism Huot Hak and Dusit Manapan and Chayika Wongnapachant, advisors to the Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, to discuss cross-border travel and promoting seamless tourism on Monday in Phnom Penh. The source said the Cambodian tourism minister supported Thailand's "6 Countries, 1 Dest…

From Barron's / AFP Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet kept a low profile at the ASEAN summit in Vientiane, holding meetings on the sidelines with fellow leaders but making no public statements to the media. An ex-military man, he marched straight past waiting reporters as he arrived for summit sessions, his most animated moment a jovial conversation with Singapore's foreign minister. More than a year after inheriting power from his father Hun Sen, he has yet to hold an open news conference to explain how he will navigate challenges including balancing China and the West. In contrast, Hun Sen regularly opines on government policy to his millions …

From Pattaya Mail By Barry Kenyon Cambodia’s neighbors, including Thailand, are concerned about the rapid rise of Chinese sea power and its possible use of the Ream naval base only a few hundred km south of the Thai naval port of Sattahip. The fear is that China is expanding its military footprint beyond the seizure of several disputed islands in the South China Sea which have already been fortified. But neither Thailand nor Vietnam are saying much publicly to avoid disrupting vital trade relationships with China and, separately, because there’s nothing they can do anyway. Surveillance photos show that the Ream harbor has a new pier, a new dry dock, warehou…

From AP / MSN Cambodia on Friday decried newly imposed U.S. sanctions on one of the country's top tycoons who has been implicated in allegations of forced labor, human trafficking and lucrative online scams. Cambodia’s foreign ministry expressed “deep regret over the unjust decision” to sanction Ly Yong Phat and suggested that the action could hurt bilateral relations. Ly Yong Phat, one of Cambodia’s richest men, is also a Cambodian senator and a leading member of the ruling Cambodian People's Party of Prime Minister Hun Manet. The U.S. Treasury Department on Thursday imposed sanctions on Ly Yong Phat and five of his businesses “for their role in serious hu…

I arrived here this afternoon - we had a scary landing during a thunder storm. As I left the hotel to start exploring I was greeted by a very handsome tuk - tuk driver. "You come with me to market?" " You come with me to my room?" Actually, I didn't say that but I was sorely tempted to. Obviously, he's not gay, otherwise he'd be working at Fresh Boys! If I can work up the courage I might make that offer to him, just to watch him chuck wow. Leave it with me.

From NY Times By Anton L. Delgado Reporting from Phnom Penh and Kampong Speu, Cambodia Aug. 24, 2024, 12:01 a.m. ET The brand-new bus gleamed as it weaved through rush-hour traffic in Cambodia’s capital. It was headed to a school, bearing a lesson about the country’s darkest period. About two-thirds of Cambodia’s population is under 30, born a generation or more after the genocidal rule of the Khmer Rouge in the late 1970s. Many of those young people have only a general awareness of its atrocities, which left at least 1.7 million Cambodians dead. T…
