Back in my first years in Hong Kong, the movie "Somewhere in Time" with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour was a massive hit in the city. It ran for months and became the longest running movie ever up to that time, even eclipsing Bruce Lee movies. Time! A friend asked me a question the other day that I have been asked a number of times before. If you could turn back the clock to any date and period in history, which would you choose - and why? The first time I was asked this a few years ago I assumed he meant in my llfetime and I had no hesitation in saying the first years I discovered Bangkok with its gogo bars and later the early saunas. Only later I realised …

https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/a65350192/baldness-cure-sugar-study/ New research suggests the cure to male pattern baldness might be sugar. The team simulated testosterone-based balding in mice and treated them with deoxyribose sugar, which stimulated blood vessel formation and ultimately caused hair regrowth. Researchers say that the sugar treatment is just as effective as minoxidil (the active ingredient in Rogaine), a hair loss treatment currently on the market https://www.iflscience.com/this-sugar-could-be-a-cure-for-male-pattern-baldness-and-its-been-in-our-bodies-all-along-79950 Put down the rosemary oil and pause the red li…

  3. I subscribe to just one youtube travel channel because I have found quite a few are generally a waste of time! No doubt others will disagree. Solo Solo Travel is run by a young Japanese guy - I am assuming he is late 20s/early 30s. How he pays for his travel I do not know because he rarely has any sponsors. Yet he travels a lot in first and business class around the world. One vdo even has him travelling on Etihad's hugely expensive Residence Suite. He also has some fascinating vdos of bus and train trips in Japan and low cost hotels, including one to a fabulous Japanese winter spa town which I hope to visit. Thankfully there is no intrusive music or aural commentary. His…

  4. Just a very general and perhaps light hearted topic Impresario Sergei Diaghilev Sergei Diaghilev was born in the Russian city of Perm to a noble family in 1872. Homosexuality in Russia at that time was virtually regarded as an illness and a detriment to success. Not that it did not exist. Russia’s most famous composer Tchaikovsky was very gay, as indeed was his brother Modest, and had all manner of affairs. But he could not shake off a continuing depression that being gay was wrong. Having moved to St. Petersburg, Diaghilev positively revelled in it and was perhaps the only major Russian to be accepted by society at the very end of the 19th century as openly gay…

  5. Am I alone in thinking it's a bit silly when the audience claps as the conductor enters the orchestra pit, or when the curtains rise at the start of a play, musical, or opera? I certainly clap after a piece is played, or after a well-sung aria, and so on. But should just showing up for work merit applause? Occasionally, I will applaud as the curtains are raised, when I see an impressive set. But then I'm applauding the set designer(s)/production crew, whose work is on display, rather than the actors or singers, who haven't started working yet.

Ok I recently got a Facebook feed about this red uncle saga from China. Apparently some 40yo Chinese guy dressed like a girl and used online dating apps to hook up with some straight men and video recorded all of his encounters and released them online. It is circulating everywhere now. More than 1000 guys hooked up with her and some might have committed suicide. China seems to be enforcing the anti gay propaganda fiercely from now on but when I was searching for the videos I got into many Chinese telegram groups that share porns and I gotta confess, there is a whole another world out there. It makes american porn industry laughable... I am sure the hiring in …

  8. Another massive quake has hit, this time to the east of Russia. 8.8 on the Richter scale is a huge earthquake getting quite close to that off Japan in 2011 which resulted in such massive destruction. Evacuation orders have been posted in Japan and Hawaii and the first tsunami has now hit Japan's Hokkaido. Mercifully it was small. Tsunami warnings are in place all over the Pacific, even as far as Ecuador. The Russian Academy of Sciences has warned that aftershocks, possibly as large as 7.5, should be expected for the next month. https://www.bbc.com/news/live/c3r4x9yrrg4t

  9. Rather than extend the Air India crash thread, this deserves a new one. A Delta 737 jet with 150 aboard was cleared for take-off at Mexico City and was speeding down the runway when, after it reached about 60 mph the pilots noticed an Aeromexico jet just above them and clearly intent on landing on the same runway. Had that scenario continued, there would have been an almighty fireball with all on board both flights killed. The Delta pilots slammed on the breaks and cut engine power before returning to its gate. Flightradar shows that the planes were just 200 feet apart. Mexico City has two parallel runways. We will have to wait to find out whether this was an air tr…

Yikes. What a gruesome way to die. A reminder not to wear metal near an MRI scanner... https://people.com/man-killed-in-freak-mri-accident-wife-recalls-watching-machine-snatch-him-11775514?did=18645084-20250720&hid=089247988732f9a900151e1f8c73f2c531df3c3a&lctg=089247988732f9a900151e1f8c73f2c531df3c3a&lr_input=3911d0b923e8d92c50f8b74007080afa59d66697825b8a1e414be8db883b8062#comments And the decedent wasn't even the person whose MRI was getting done! Has anyone bought any of the very cheap items from Temu? They have extraordinarily cheap electronic items OBVIOUSLY copies but do they work? Thanks, but I don't need warnings from people who have never bought from them. I'll start it off by saying I once bought a VERY cheap watch (148 baht) but had to buy more for minimum order so I bought razor blades to bring the order to 180 ish Baht. The watch is excellent but the blades were rubbish. I am interested in a cheap reserve phone to keep for emergencies.

  12. If there is one thing I recall from my early years in Hong Kong it is the tensions between North and South Korea. Having to visit Seoul many times in the 1980s meant coping with martial law, the worst effect of which was the midnight curfew. Be on the streets thereafter could - and for some did - mean being shot. Martial Law had been declared in 1960 by President Syngman Rhee, the strongman hated anti-nationalist imposed on South Korea by the United States. Since the end of the Korean War, the North had constantly taunted South Korea with endless illegal provocations. One of the most aggressive was the downing of a South Korean airliner en route from Baghdad with an…

  13. In line with many other airlines, Cathay Pacific will change its mileage and status points requirement on August 20. As the email blurb says "we're enhancing your membership experience." Well, that's what they all say! It also points out there will be "some increases and some decreases". There is nothing (yet) about increased number of miles for redemption tickets. No doubt that will come later It has also redefined some of its distance zones. The chart it provides is too complicated for me to analyse quickly. It does seem that more miles/points will be gained from flex bookings in premium, business and first classes (understandable) whereas at the back end of the ai…

I was reading an article in People magazine about Kassius Marcil-Green, the 23 year-old gay son of Brian Austin Green. "BAG has a 23-year-old son?", I thought. That was a good reminder of my age... 😄 https://www.instagram.com/kassius_marcil_green/?hl=en Brain Austin Green as I remembered him:

They have been threatening to block it to those living abroad for months but now there is a message saying it will be blocked from 21st July. I am going to miss that very much. I hate change.

In recent decades the world has seen several figures who have deserved iconic status for their efforts to extol the virtues of peace. Not all have been the equivalent of angels throughout their lives but the good they have brought the world has been in most cases extraordinary. Who could suffer in jail for almost a third of ther lives like Nelson Mandela and yet still emerge to unite a nation? Another leader was surely the late Pope Francis, a man who brought light into life for many in our world despite having to battle constantly with the ingrained conservatism of his Curia and the long-term effects of the pedophile scandals of the Catholic Church. But is anyone mo…

  20. Thai PM seems to have shot herself in the foot by deferring to Cambodians over recent border issues in a leaked call. She is due to have a meeting with the criticised Thai General, which might be awkward. History suggests that Shinawatra disputes with the army do not end well for the Shinawatras. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jun/20/thai-prime-minister-paetongtarn-shinawatra-apologises-phone-leak-crisis-cambodia-hun-sen

  21. Viktor Orban's increasingly extreme attempt to associate homosexuality with paedophilia, in order to drive homosexuality back into the closet, seems to be reaching a fulcrum with the banning of the Budapest Gay Pride march next weekend, on the grounds that it might be seen by children who would be forever scarred(or seduced?) by the event. The libertarian Mayor of Budapest(challenger to Orban in the next national elections) is determined that the march should go ahead and European MEPs and human rights activists have pledged their support and to be present on the march. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c2k1d7dlgzko
