Debra Jones claims in her lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina that her supervisors at Truist subjected her to workplace discrimination and created a hostile work environment - causing her emotional and financial harm. Mehrad Asadi Eidivand, who was living in the U.S. on a work permit, was arrested outside his Phoenix home in May and taken to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Florence, Arizona. In protest of his detainment, the avid bodybuilder went on an initial hunger strike that left him diagnosed with acute kidney injury, court records say. Asadi Eidivand soon began a second hunger strike, leading of…

As Thailand seeks to increase its revenues by attracting more and more of the richer expats as retirees, it might begin to consider what has happened in another popular destination, Portugal. For those living in Europe - or even further afield but anxious to consider retirement in Europe - Portugal became so popular it was top of most lists for quite a few years. Retirement visas were cheap, regulations relatively easy and the possibility of citizenship and free healthcare after 5 years very enticing for some. Those now considering a European country best forget about Portugal. It has become so popular that Lisbon, once the most affordable capital in Europe, is now i…

  5. The number of airlines having to reroute to avoid areas of war and conflict has increased considerably in recent years. Some say that since 2021 the areas of conflict have increased by a whopping 65%, forcing airlines to avoid certain large areas with consequent increases in flight times and costs. As one example, flights between Helsinki and Tokyo now take up to three and a half hours longer than before the war in Ukraine began Now imagine you are on a flight over Israel - and this is a true story. You are piloting a large passenger aircraft at a cruising altitude of 38,000 ft and all seems normal. Suddenly you notice that the clock in the cabin has started to go ba…

Like them or loathe them, polls will never go away. We all have our favourite airline (if we can afford it) but others have as well. Skytrax allegedly polls massive numbers of passengers. How accurate are its findings? No idea! But I know quite a few airlines send mails to their loyalty members asking that they consider voting for those airlines. At least the polls are a talking point. These are the 2025 top 10 - 1. Qatar - 2. Singapore - 3. Cathay Pacific - 4. Emirates - 5. ANA - 6. Turkish - 7. Korean - 8. Air France - 9. JAL - 10. Hainan The biggest jump from 2024 is Korean up four places, Cathay Pacific and Hainan Airlines both up two places and Turkish up …

My hubbie and I are planning to visit Java and Bali next summer (probably August 2026), and have looked at some organized tours of the area. Obviously, we want to visit Borobudur and Prambanan temples, but some tours visit Jakarta and some don't. The Gate1 Discovery Tour visits Jakarta, but skips eastern Java, while EF Go Ahead Tours skips Jakarta but visits eastern Java. I should note that Gate1 Discovery seems to be less expensive, go to better hotels, and include more meals. I'm hoping someone here has visited Java and can share his opinions. https://www.gate1travel.com/small-groups/small-group-asia/2026/small-groups-indonesia-15did26.aspx?Brand=DISCOVER http…

Do you have US$60,000 to spare - per person, that is? If so you could be heading off on a special European-bound trip on the iconic Pan Am! Pan Am? Didn't that go bust decades ago? It sure did, even though I remember quite a number of cheap 747 flights I took between Hong Kong and Tokyo before the Pacific routes were sold to United as the airkline fought to stave up bankruptcy. But luxury travel company Bartelings and Criterion Travel believes there are enough nostalgic (and rich) people somewhere to take a journey folowing one of the traditional and original Pan Am routes. But better get your skates on. The trip starts and ends with a gala dinner at New York's Waldo…

  11. An American Airlines Dreamliner similar to the one which crashed in India was forced to make no less than four emergency landings in the space of just one month, as reported in The Telegraph in London. Some of the technical reasons related to wing flaps. On January 7, the Dreamliner flight AA203 from Amsterdam to Philadelphia had a problem with wing flaps, dumped fuel over the Atlantic and made an emergency landing back at Schipol at higher than normal speed. The flight was eventually rescheduled for the next day. However, that too had to be cancelled when engineers discovered a hydraulics issue. Three days later the aircraft was still on the ground in Amsterdam. …

A volcano to the east of Bali erupted yesterday sending a cloud of ash approx. 10,000 meters into the air. Although Bali's airport continues to operate, as a result some airlines including Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Air India, Air Asia, Tiger Air and a couple of others cancelled flights, Qantas and others are closely monitoring the situation. Best check with your airline if you have travel plans in the next few days. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jun/18/bali-flights-cancelled-volcano-eruption-indonesia

Downtown Los Angeles was blocked off yesterday due to violent protests of Trump's immigration actions. Waymo vehicles were especially targeted, for reasons not clear to me (perhaps because they're driverless, so nobody gets hurt?).

  14. Pity that Trump tore up the original Iran Nuclear agreement in his first term. That plan had been negotiated over a period of five years by the major countries of the world including the EU, Russia and China with Iran and included Iran's agreement to limit and reduce it's nuclear capacity under the strict supervision of the IAEA. The other objectors at the time were Israel and Saudi Arabia. Original Iran Nuclear deal

I was checking out at a local supermarket today, and the supermarket clerk asked "Would you care to donate to [the supermarket's favorite charity] today?". I just said "No, thanks," but I asked my hubbie if next time they ask me, I should respond with "That's not one of my favorite charities, but would you care to donate to Rainbow Railroad? They have 4 stars on CharityNavigator.org ...". He said he didn't think I should, but I thought, if it's OK for them to ask total strangers to donate to their favorite charities, why wouldn't it be OK for me to ask them the same question? Of course, I don't go around asking strangers to donate to charities of my choice, but if someone…

  16. 22 year-old British canoeist Kurts Adams Rozentals appears to have been given a stark choice between being on the UK team and continuing his OnlyFans career. But he seems to be unable to fund his paddling vocation without OnlyFans. Which would you choose? Would you give up your Olympic dream? Of course, what he was doing on OnlyFans isn't illegal, and could actually lead to more interest in watching the sport? https://www.pride.com/olympic-hopeful-kurts-adams-rozentala#rebelltitem2 Rozentals has now publicly addressed the controversy, telling BBC Sport, “I’ve been posting videos that are consciously made to be edgy in order to d…

  17. We recently took a cruise with a cruise line we haven't cruised with before, Regent Seven Seas, a line which caters to older passengers. In the past, we've mostly cruised with Celebrity Cruises (which also caters to an older crowd), and Royal Caribbean. On the other two lines, we're invited to fill out surveys online, via e-mail. I was surprised on RSS, however, when I found out that the only way to complete their survey was to scan a QR code, which was available at the Guests' Services desk or in the Library, and complete the survey on one's phone. This did not seem appealing to me. In fact, at the final evening entertainment, the cruise director announced that only 80 o…

I had brunch with a young Taiwanese friend whom I have known for about ten years on Sunday. He had just returned from a week's holiday with a friend in Sicily (good timing because there was a massive eruption of Mt. Etna yesterday). He is 29, has a job with an Italian company and goes to Milan twice a year economy class for business. He also likes to take in trips to Tokyo where he has a love interest. I was slightly surprised that the two longest of his three flights to Sicily were in business class using mileage. His trips to Tokyo are also in business class. I asked which Alliance he is in and how he is able to accrue mileage so quickly. He's in One World using th…

  19. Steven Hotze, a Republican donor from Texas and Houston-area physician, has been on an anti-gay campaign since 1982. In that year he launched a petition in Austin, Texas, to legalize housing discrimination against gay people. He called gays "criminals" and "soldomites". He alleged that giving protection from discrimination to LGBTQ people is "like thieves and murderers trtying to gain political power." Hotze has tried without success numerous times on numerous anti-gay issues. Until the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in 2015. This idiot launched a "Faith, Family, Freedom" tour using a cacophony of anti-gay slurs from his usual rhetoric saying he was fighting a …

  20. We're halfway through a 2-week cruise, on a voyage where most of the guests are in their 70s and 80s (neither of us is). The evening entertainment consists mainly of shows containing music of the 70s and 80s, when most of the guests would have been in their youths. There doesn't seem to be any music from the last 30 years. Well, I'm in my early 60s, yet I usually listen to more contemporary music. Yes, sometimes I listen to music from my youth, but less often. I don't necessarily listen to every latest song, but I prefer listening to more current singers. Obviously, the cruise line tries to cater to its target passenger, but is it really the case that older people aren't …

  21. We know Trump is a liar. He lies all the time. White lies? Not a bit of it. Whopping great big iies on the international stage - and he gets away with it! Anyone who does not believe that is living in some weird fantasy world. Take his Oval Office meeting with the South African President last week, Cyril Ramaphosa. He accused Ramaphosa of the systematic killing of white farmers. Rubbish! He has already permitted several white farmers refugee status in the USA because otherwise they would be victims of genocide. Rubbish! He dimmed the Oval Office lights to show a video showing roughtly 1,000 white crosses. "They're all white farmers, the family of white farmers . . .…

It's been a while since someone offered me a penny for my thoughts and, now that the U. S. mints are going to stop making them, I wonder if I'll ever get another offer. 🤔 Don't get me wrong. My thoughts have never been a major source of revenue. For starters, there aren't that many of them and the ones that do come along never seem to generate a whole lot of interest. If I get a penny twice a year I'd consider it a pretty good year. Now soon even that little trickle will be gone. Worthless thoughts will slowly pile up, one on top of another, until a random breeze blows through and scatters them to the wind. 💨 And what about you folks? Will there still …

  23. My hubbie, along with some friends and myself, attended a Kylie Minogue concert in downtown Los Angeles last night. Opening for her prior to Kylie's performance was British singer Rita Ora. Rita began with greeting "Good evening, Los Angeles," which she pronounced "Los AngeLEEZE." I must admit that it pissed me off a bit. How would she like it if someone came to perform in Gloucester, England and said "Good evening, Glau-sister"? And it's not as if Los Angeles is a smaller town, either. I wouldn't go to Australia and ask to buy a plane ticket to "Brize-BANE." Nor would I go to Thailand and try to buy a ticket to "Fuck-it". Even when I take code-share British Airways fligh…
