CAUTION. Subject to change on a whim. 🙂 From the Thaiger The government announced plans to introduce its long-mooted 300 baht tourist fee for foreign visitors in June. The tourism fee was originally planned to be imposed on foreign travellers at the beginning of last year but the idea was put on hold after the spread of the Covid-19 Omicron variant and details of how the government planned to collect the money.

From The Nation An Austrian man fell to his death from the fourth floor of his hotel room in Bangkok’s Khlong Toei district on Tuesday night (January 10). The deceased, identified as Mario Fruhwirt, 49, an Austrian national, suffered fatal injuries to his head after he fell from his room on to the hotel’s awning and landed on the ground, Lumpini Police Station officials said. Police found several empty cans of beer and a broken glass window panel in his room on the top floor of the four-storey hotel. Investigators speculated that the deceased might have been drunk and jumped through the window, breaking the panel. A hotel staffer said Fruhwirt ha…

  8. If ever there was a case for Xi Jin-ping to reverse his massively misguided covid prevention measures it is surely now. After suddenly withdrawing the lockdown restrictions without any advance warning, many news outlets are reporting Chinese officials as saying that covid cases in the country will mushroom to as many as 250 million by the end of this month. Zhejiang Province around Shanghai reported one million new cases since the new policy was adopted and expects this to double quickly. Now the government has significantly loosened restrictions for in bound tourism and is considering permitting Chinese citizens to travel out of the country again. With these levels …

From Thai PBS World At least 50 Thai gamblers and employees of a Cambodian casino in the Poipet border town were reported to be trapped inside after the casino caught fire late Wednesday night. A number of people, mostly Thais, were injured and were taken to the Thai border town of Aranyaprathet, Sa Kaeo Province, for treatment. It is not known whether or how many people have died in the fire, as some witnesses claim that they saw some people jumping from the 5th floor of the building, which is located at about 20 metres from the border. About 50 people were seen on the roof. Five fire trucks and about 10 rescue vehicles and ambulances rushed to the scene t…

  10. Firstly, I do not mean for this post to start a discussion of organised religion per se. Inevitably perhaps some will regard it as so and I can do nothing about that. Secondly I am basically not a religious person. I became very anti-organised religion when as a child I was sometimes dragged to church and for years had to play the hymns at a weekly meeting for young people called Bible Service. I do know quite a number who do believe in religion and I fully respect their views, as I trust they respect mine. It appears from the news media that the previous Pope, the former Cardinal Ratzinger, is on the point of death. His successor, Pope Benedict has asked for pr…

Apparently he was conversing with what he thought was a 17yo guy , and the person had asked him to send naked pics(which he didn't and lucky ) but what he thought was the 17yo turned out to be a overseas American church group apparently looking for pedophiles . Now it seems they realised the age of consent in Australia is 16yo and got angry ( according to him ) and somehow sent him links of the church hunting group and told him to keep off the apps they are going to police etc etc which didn't happen So I heard this also going in i…

From CNN The 91-story skyscraper, also known as 111 West 57th Street, contains 46 full-floor and duplex residences. Photos released this month by the designers show opulent lobbies decked out in limestone, marble, blackened steel and velvet, floors paved in smoke-gray solid oak and original artworks by Picasso and Matisse. According to Studio Sofield, Steinway Tower's interiors were designed to evoke the grandeur of New York's Gilded Age, a period in the late 19th century when the city's boulevards were lined with the stately mansions of robber barons like Andrew Carnegie and Cornelius Vanderbilt. It sits on a Midtown street, filled with gleaming towers, t…

It's not merely the images themselves, but the fact that they capture events taken so many light years back in time and my mind finds that almost impossible to comprehend. I've been looking for a feel good story for the holidays and this story from a Thai wildlife sanctuary fits the bill. The embedded video speaks volumes. From Coconuts Bangkok Photo: National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department A baby elephant is regaining its strength this morning at a sanctuary in central Thailand days after it was found alone and injured. Wildlife officials said veterinarians have looked after the female calf they named Thanwa, or December, around the clock since she was transported to the Bungchawak Wildlife Management Development Center with an injured foot. Thanwa was also dehydrated, and her kidneys were faili…

For the past six weeks, the local and international media have been carrying accounts of raids on multiple locations in the Bangkok and Pattaya area where Chinese triad gangsters were operating upscale gambling and drug dens catering almost exclusively to wealthy Chinese. Here's an excerpt from an article in today's South China Morning Post (the remainder of story sits behind a paywall). Some of it reads like something out of John Burdett's Bangkok 8. "A seized private jet, supercars, drugs and palatial mansions: the spoils of crime committed by suspected Chinese gangsters based in Thailand are raising awkward questions over how foreign crimi…

From The Nation Seven Thai nationals managed to break out of the clutches of a Chinese call-centre gang in the Cambodian border town of Krong Bavet on Tuesday. The victims said they were allowed out of their detention facility at 5am after their Chinese bosses learned that they had sought help via Facebook. The victims then took a tuk-tuk to the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh to seek help to return home. On a Facebook Live clip posted at 1am, a woman can be seen asking for help, saying they were being held against their will by security guards and electric fencing. She said she and other victims had been forced to work for more…
