From CNN Travel Amsterdam (CNN) — Hours-long lines for security that often snake outside under tents. Untold numbers of angry passengers who have queued in those lines -- yet still missed their flights. Worker strikes and delayed or lost baggage. Condemnation by major airlines, most notably KLM. At Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, labor shortages continue to fuel unprecedented chaos that began in the spring, prompting many travelers and aviation insiders to wonder what has happened to an airport long considered one of the most efficient and highly regarded in Europe -- if not the world. The beleaguered airport -- the world's third busiest f…

From Channel News Asia BANGKOK: A former policeman killed 37 people, including 22 children, in a gun and knife rampage at a childcare centre in north-eastern Thailand on Thursday (Oct 6), later shooting dead his wife and child at their home before turning his weapon on himself, police said. The children at the childcare centre in Uthai Sawan, a town 500km northeast of Bangkok, were mostly stabbed to death, they said. Police identified the attacker as a former member of the force who was dismissed from his post last year over drug allegations and he was facing trial on a drugs charge. The man had been in court earlier in the day and had then gone to the…

From Thai PBB World Cubans have voted overwhelmingly to legalise same-sex marriage, making the country the 33rd to stop defining marriage as being exclusively between a man and a woman. Cuba’s landmark new family code also allows “altruistic” surrogacy, whereby a woman gives birth to a baby on behalf of another woman or couple but no money changes hands, bar for expenses. Here is a global overview of same-sex marriage and surrogacy: The Netherlands in 2001 became the first country in the world to allow same-sex couples to marry. Since then, 17 European countries have followed: Austria, Belgium, Britain, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, …

From the Thaiger Finnish police have arrested and detained the CEO of berry company “Polarica” under suspicion of human trafficking. CEO Jukka Kristo allegedly “deceived” 1100 Thai berry pickers and housed them in “poor conditions.” This year, Kristo’s company flew around 1100 Thais to Finland to work as berry pickers – an industry that heavily relies on a foreign workforce. The CEO has arranged seasonal work for Thais for several years. In total, 17 of Kristo’s Thai berry pickers filed complaints of forced labour and low wages with the Thai agency that employed them. All 17 returned to Thailand with the assistance of the Royal Thai Embassy in Helsinki. …

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2022 prize to imprisoned Belarus activist Ales Bialiatski, the Russian group Memorial and the Ukrainian organization Center for Civil Liberties. When I was last in Bangkok, I stayed in Silom at the Ibis Styles. Nice hotel, but awful breakfast. I tried to find a decent breakfast outside of the hotel within walking distance but didn't really have much luck. I really liked Au Bon Pain near the Silom Metro stop but that has since closed. Coffee World is good but not everyday. Are there any other decent cafes within walking distance that have similar offerings? thanks!

I don't know a great deal about Cuba except from some Gay Cuban friends of mine. One of them left Cuba for Spain, and eventually US, a couple decades ago because he was gay. I will have to ask them about their take on this. I was surprised it was supported by their President and therefore the Communist Party. Without the Communist Party's support there never could have been a referendum. I know some guys here had expressed a desire to visit Cuba during the period Obama had opened up on visiting there. https://www.npr.org/2022/09/27/1125344835/cuba-approves-same-sex-marriage

From coconuts Bangkok A Sathorn-area vaccination center set to close last week will remain open for the foreseeable future, according to the Disease Control Department. The department reversed plans to close the clinic at the Bang Rak Medical Center, which has been providing free access to vaccines for citizens and immigrants alike, after business groups and an association advocating for Americans petitioned for it to remain open. “The department of disease control considered and agreed to open the COVID-19 vaccine service in addition with the center’s regular health services,” the department said Monday in a letter to the Americans in Thailand Association.…

  13. Another thread in this forum has become more one based on history. One poster likes to cherry-pick and discuss only what he considers historical facts that make his country look good. Yet virtually all countries carry frightful historical legacies. The massacre of entire civilisations in Central and South America by Spain and Portugal, for example, cannot merely be brushed aside. The treatment of indigenous peoples by Britain, Canada, Australia, the USA and others must not be forgotten. Slavery and colonisation resulted in the degrading of humanity on a humungous scale, and it was all to increase the profits of slave owners and colonial masters. Another issue that de…

As my interest in now peaked and I would like to see more.😜 Was someone trying to extort him? He is trying to sue the sender of the photos. Can he really expect privacy from his boss or others when he has put him self out there. Is it fair to lose a job for this? I guess so, but seems it might of increased their viewersh…

From The Thaiger With High Season approaching and the Thai government predicting big numbers, airport expansion plans are being fast-tracked. One of Thailand’s goals as international travel begins to return in greater numbers is to become a transport hub for Southeast Asia. To help realise the goal and make room for an influx of travellers, facilities are being expanded in both domestic and international airports around the country. Smaller regional hubs race to expand and increase their capacity for domestic travellers. Krabi Airport in Southern Thailand will herald travellers to popular tourist destinations outside of Phuket. Khon Kaen Airport in the northeast…

From Thai News Agency BANGKOK, Sept 30 (TNA) — Twenty-baht polymer banknotes show different serial numbers in Thai and Arabic digits on each bill due to a production flaw but owners can use them or exchange them at banks and financial institutions, according to the Bank of Thailand. BOT deputy governor Vachira Aromdee said the defective banknotes were produced by De La Rue International Limited (DLR) and the central bank already stopped distributing the bills from the company. Initial investigation showed that normal quality control could not detect the mistake, she said. People could use such banknotes and exchange them at banks and specific financial inst…

  24. I will never forget my first visit to this extraordinary and stunning city. It was a three-day week-end in a goriously sunny October in 1978. Since then I have returned three times, twice with my bf of the day. Once with a Thai friend was in 1991 on a trip which we started in Grindelwald in Switzerland at the foot of the famous Jungfraujoch cable railway that takes you well above the snowline. We then drove over the Alps for a night by Lake Garda before three days in Venice where we enjoyed great weather, before driving over the amazing Dolomites to Salzburg, Munich then Zurich and home. The second was more recently in 2003 with my Taiwan bf when unfortunately we hit the …

From Thai PBS World The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has taken steps, including draining water out of canals in and around the city and procuring 2.5 million sandbags to reinforce flood walls, to brace for heavy rain and possible waterway overflows induced by tropical storm Noru, which is expected to hit some north-eastern provinces this Thursday. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said today (Monday) that, according to their scenario planning, the most worrisome aspects of the storm are the runoffs from the Pasak reservoir in Lop Buri and from the Chao Phraya reservoir, which will put pressure on the eastern part of Bangkok and both sides of the…
