From Thai PBS World Thai Airways aircrafts and other carriers are parked at the tarmac of the Suvarnabhumi International Airport Thailand’s embattled national carrier, Thai Airways International Plc (THAI), said it was looking to add 9 more aircraft to its fleet as its passenger load factor continues to rise. THAI, which is still undergoing its bankruptcy restructuring process after its already loss-making business was severely impacted by the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020, said it was looking to bring into service some of the parked aircrafts it has in its fleet and it was also looking to lease as many as 4 Airbus A350-900s during 2023. When the World Cup was awared to Qatar back in 2010, few could believe what sort of madness had overtake FIFA. Since then, we have finally had proof about FIFA being the supremely corrupt body we always suspected it was. The World Cup has always been a huge event with matches covering stadia in several cities around the host countries. Tiny Qatar was neither known as a soccer nation not did it have any decent soccer stadia. No probem parrotted FIFA. Qatar had promised to build stadia with special air conditioning systems to counter the horrendous summer heat. As we know, that was never going to work and FIFA did a unique about turn by changing the timing of the tournament…

Recommended by someone in another forum, last year I got to read THE RICE QUEEN DIARIES by Daniel Gawthrop. I enjoyed the book, especially the chapters about his travels and life in Thailand. Even though the book is almost 20 years old and due to my age I started visiting Thailand and Asia much later than the author, I could relate to some of the places and feelings described in the book. I would like to know if anyone can help me find other books with similar subject and theme? So something along the lines of gay scene/life in Thailand or any other Asian country, preferably seen from a foreigner's perspective and published in the last 20-30 years. Heading to BKK in …

From the Thaiger A football has not been kicked in anger at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and already a match-fixing scandal has erupted. If the decision to stage football’s most prestigious competition in the Arab country of Qatar wasn’t controversial enough, amid allegations of corruption and human rights violations, FIFA has to deal with an alleged match-fixing impropriety on the eve of the tournament. The Regional head of the British Centre for Middle East Studies, Amjad Taha, claimed on Twitter that World Cup 2022 host Qatar has bribed eight players from the Ecuador national team to throw the opening match on Sunday, November 20. Taha, an exper…

I arrived in Thailand for the first time 20 years ago on a Northwest Airlines 747, landing at Don Mueang. Could believe what I saw out the window: a golf course running between the parallel runways! I think there are few readers who haven't flown the 747 at least once in their lifetime. From National Public Radio The very last 747 jet has been made, ending a run of more than 50 years The jet transformed an industry, bringing luxurious amenities and lengthy nonstop flights to the masses — all in a design that was both enormous and elegant. But the reign of the mighty 747 has ended, and Boeing says the last plane left its assembly line this week, a…

From Reuters BANGKOK, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Thailand raised its daily minimum wage for the first time in more than two years on Friday, the labour ministry said, as it seeks to help workers cope with rising living costs and the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. A committee made up of government representatives, companies and labour groups agreed to raise wages by an average of 5.02% from Oct. 1, Boonchob Suthamanaswong, the ministry's permanent secretary, said in a statement. The minimum wage was last hiked in January 2020, by 1.6%-1.8%. The exact rates differ slightly between regions with the three most industrialised provinces - Chonburi, Rayong…

From The Nation Thailand’s cruel sex traffickers have struck again. The victim, a man only identified as ‘B,’ said the three traffickers told him he would work as a massage therapist in Dubai last year. On top of a monthly 80,000 baht salary, B was promised free food and accommodation, as well as a free flight. But B was in for a horrific realisation. Once he arrived at the massage shop in Dubai in November 2021, the Chinese manager seized his passport. B was then forced to sell sex to pay off more than 70,000 baht of debt he was told he owed for his travel costs. B said that clients were charged 900 baht per session, and half of this was deducted to…

The restoration of the Neilson Hays Library, which took place from 2016 through 2018, received an Award of Distinction at the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. “The project sets a welcome benchmark for the restoration of early twentieth-century buildings of western architectural design in humid tropical environments,” the UNESCO jury said in a statement. Why do anytime dictators are failing, they start pushing anti-gay agenda? Is it to distract their people, or to assert how macho they are? Putin, yes that one - a run of the mill goblin and this century’s Russian dictator - in the midst of failing at the most recent war of his choice in the Ukraine, and allegedly shitting himself following a fall, found time to sign a new law aimed at preventing the spread of non-traditional lifestyle propaganda: https://www.aol.com/putin-continues-russian-culture-war-165906142.html A bit ironic, isn’t it? 18. I know-knew- three of them: Tuk Com, Royal Garden top floor and Central. And they are now all gone. For those who didn't try them, they were slightly cheaper versions of MK, minus the cute waiters and waitresses* (they were buffet style) but with the benefit of free soft drinks and , significantly for me, free sweets which included unlimited Panna Cottas. Sadly, not MK's unmissable roast duck though. If a meal for falang+ boyfriend (non-drinkers) in MK cost 800bht or so, Hotpot's version was 500/600. Good value. Perhaps too good to survive. * And now those d**n robots.

From CNN Airbus has previously announced a variety of hydrogen-powered airplane concepts as part of its ZEROe program, including the Blended Wing Body. (CNN) — Airbus has announced it is developing a hydrogen-powered fuel cell engine -- and that it plans to test it on the largest commercial airplane ever to take to the skies. The French aviation giant revealed at Airbus Summit 2022 on November 30 that it will mount the engine between the wings and the tail of a modified A380 superjumbo. Test flights are estimated for 2026, as part of the Airbus ZEROe initiative to launch a zero-emission aircraft by 2035. "In terms of aerodynamics, the A380 is a v…

From The Thaiger Despite conflicting optimistic predictions, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is warning that Thai tourism may take a sharp downturn next year. While international travellers are flocking to Thailand now, industry experts fear that it may be a flood of pent-up demand and, by next year, all those who waited through the whole pandemic to get to Thailand will have already booked and taken their trips. TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn explained that, for nearly three years, people could not travel and take holidays due to Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. Once Thailand began reopening, many overly-eager people raced to enter the …

I suspect not many will remember Jiang Zemin other than he took over the leadership of China when Deng stepped aside after 1989. As the obituaries have noted, he was a very different type of leader from the present President Xi. He even charmed Bill Clinton after Clinton had earlier virtually trashed him as a "butcher of Beijing"! He certainly seems to have been a man who revelled in life. A recent book about the tenor Luciano Pavarotti has an interesting anecdote which perhaps illustrates this. In 2001 the Olympic Bidding Committee was in Beijing making its final assessment of the bids for the 2008 Games. To coincide with this, the Chinese had organised a concert wi…
