I know there has been a lot of controversy over Paula Deen's late announcement that she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 3 years ago. Many believed she delayed telling anyone because it would have destroyed her then current public profile and TV shows, appearances, etc. And now with her telling the Today Show audience that not only was she diagnosed 3 years ago, now she is a paid spokesperson for a diabetes drugs. She has had a lot of backlash for this. Now the ad below is coming out from the New York Sports Clubs. I think this is a bit tacky frankly.

My visit this week to the doctor revealed that, in the last 3 months, I have lost 11 pounds. The problem is that when I gave up serious weightlifting, I gained 25 pounds. So there are 14 more to lose just to get back to basics. Can I do it in the next months what with trips to New York, and Rio coming up, not to mention Christmas and Valentines?

For those with serious weight issues and attendant health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, bad HDL, etc. and cancer risk issues too, you might want to check out this diet. I think there is a very good chance there is something to this. Created by Dr Joel Furhman MD and former Olympic athlete, it is based on nutrition density of the diet. GOMBS stands for Greens, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries and Beans, and Seeds. Make these the center of your diet and weight will melt away and with it for many, those medical condtions. PBS solicited him to make a series of videos to go with a couple of books previously published. I saw his pitch. Having been an early adopter of A…

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/19/dehydration-mood-worse-women_n_1216762.html?ref=healthy-living We all know that water is good for us, but now there is scientific proof that it also helps improve our moods. It's always good to drink more water. I find that it helps with headaches, it helps with my joints as I get older, it pretty much helps with everything. I stopped drinking diet soft drinks in favor of only water and when I need a flavor I throw in a crystal light packet for some flavor. It's been wonderful.

"It doesn't take a lot. You don't have to be super intense, like a triathlon or an Alcatraz swim," said Dr. Moshe Lewis, a California Pacific Medical Center physician who specializes in pain management and sports medicine. "Only 15 minutes a day, that's not much. It's great for people to know that walking around, doing some stairs, that's getting a cardiac regimen going." Read the article

I spent some time this weekend with friends who haven't seen me since I lost 130+ pounds. They were amazed at the results and, since I'm big on getting proper protein, they recommended Quinoa. I've never heard of it before but, thanks to Google, found the following website: Quinoa I've given up on eating pasta, rice, potatoes, and similar stuff. But, they said Quinoa is a great substitute for those items. Anyone else use it?

From Health.com Sometimes the best weight-loss tricks are the easiest. Try these three. (There’s scientific proof that they really work!) Sip white tea New research shows that, compared with other types of tea, white tea contains more caffeine and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)—the chemicals that scientists believe break down fat cells and prevent new ones from forming. Eat your eggs The protein in an egg breakfast makes you feel fuller than the carbs in a bagel, researchers at the University of Connecticut say. And don’t worry about cholesterol—the study found that egg eaters don’t have higher LDL (the bad cholesterol) or lower HDL (the good kind) than bagel eate…

A Chinese man had to have an eel surgically removed from his bladder after a mishap while undergoing an unusual spa treatment. Zhang Nan, a 56-year-old resident of Hubei province, was bathing with live eels, in the hopes that the tiny, serpentine critters would nibble away layers of dead skin, revealing more youthful-looking skin below. It's similar to those unusual pedicures that have fish eat dead skin off people's feet -- except that you're fully submerged, and you're probably naked, and there are eels all over you. Anyway, Nan felt a sharp pain, realized a 6-inch eel had entered his penis and was wriggling up through his urethra. He tried to pull it out but its tiny…

Every time I get a salad with my sushi, I always wonder how they do it. I love Newman's Own, lite Asian Ginger, but it still is a so-so copy of the original. I think this one is great. But I do use lite soy, lots more garlic and double up on the Tozan rice vinegar. Carrot Ginger Dressing Ingredients 2 medium carrots 1 inch chunk of fresh ginger 1 clove garlic 2 T soy sauce 1/4 C seasoned rice vinegar 3 T water 1 t sesame oil 1 t fresh cracked pepper Directions Throw all of the ingredients into a blender- and blend until smooth. A weight-challenged individual has sued the White Castle restaurant chain, claiming that they reneged on a promise to make their seats wider to accommodate people of girth. "A 290-pound diner claims the White Castle chain has violated the civil rights of its more sizable clientele by not following through on promises to make its tight booths bigger to accommodate their bellies. Martin Kessman, a 64-year-old New Yorker, filed a complaint after he could barely squeeze into the fast-food restaurants booths and bumped his knees on the table's metal supports, the New York Post reported." The article was cited in today's SFGate.com, where readers weighed in on the subject un…

I have a confession. I am a sriracha sauce addict. This is a recent development. For most of my adult life, I have peaceably and obliviously coexisted with sriracha, overlooking it in the supermarket for Tabasco, excluding it in the kitchen as I made harissa, and bypassing it as I dabbled with south-of-the-border hot sauces. For no reason that I can think of, I ignored sriracha, aka rooster sauce — affectionately nicknamed for the rooster logo on the bottle. This changed on a recent foray into San Francisco's Chinatown, where, on an impulse, I purchased a large plastic squeeze bottle emblazoned with a flying rooster against a backdrop of fiery red sauce. I don't know wha…

5 Nutrients You're Not Getting Enough Of By Bill Phillips and the Editors of Men's Health Sep 01, 2011 After a long hard day at the office, I crave a manly dinner. Something that will sharpen my mind, feed my muscles, and infuse me with energy to keep up with two young kids till bedtime. So, often, I have a bowl of cereal. With bananas and whole milk. Mmm. Do I feel like I’m depriving my body of key nutrients? Quite the opposite, actually. My favorite dinner isn't just for kids. It contains high levels of three nutrients that American adults need much more of: B12, potassium, and iodine. Our shortfalls with these nutrients—along with vitamin D and magnes…

I got this from the Biggest Loser Newsletter. I love Mexican food more than any other ethnic food. Here was his suggestion. Eating Out Mexican Tonight? Bob Harper has some tips on what to eat and what to avoid First tell the waiter to not bring those chips to your table! I love them and could eat every basket they bring to me....STAY AWAY. Instead place an order for corn tortillas and dip them into your salsa. It is the same thing as the chips except not fried and it will satisfy that craving of wanting to dip. Instead of refried beans ask for black beans, no sour cream, no guacamole, no flour tortillas, no crispy taco shells. Okay, now that we have gone through a…

I need some help and advice. 11 weeks ago I fell down. Nope, not drunk. Not drugged. I was feeling great, put on an unfamiliar pair of running shoes and went out with the dogs. First I stopped at the fruit and veggie market to pick up some things at the 10AM arrival. Then on the way back home, fresh in one hand, dog collar in the other, I fell going downhill. Transferring weight from one foot to the other, my sole caught on a rock sticking up out of the road. Hard on my shoulder. Dislocated my jaw, bit through my lip. Lots of blood. Luckily my tooth is still there. But my shoulder is a mess. Anybody have ideas for sites with rehab exercises? I finally realized it wasn't g…

9 Strange But True Health Tips By Bill Phillips and the Editors of Men's Health Jul 25, 2011 I'm a research geek. Every day here at MensHealth.com, at our 10 a.m. news meeting, we assess dozens of new studies from researchers from around the world. Then we publish the most surprising, practical, and empowering research—findings that can change your life today—in our daily news channel. You probably run across some of these studies, too; the major ones get a lot of media attention. That's why I actually prefer sifting through smaller, more obscure periodicals, hunting for research no one else is reporting. For example, over the past week I've learned: You can l…

Just a helpful hint. I've started in with ground brown flax seeds. Great for the digestion, colon, etc. I mix it with my daily bowl of whole oats mixed with cinnamon, stevia and skim milk. Really filling and very satisfying. Has pretty much taken away the urges for ice cream. And other "bad" things. It has been a relief to have my digestion regular as before, with the decrease in calories/fat, things weren't always "moving" too regularly. And senna tea can be quite a sensory nightmare. If anyone else has tried it, you'll know!!!
