Mmmmm good! 5 Messed-Up Things That Are In Your Food Martha Rosenberg jezebel.com Many of these ingredients are banned in Europe, but here in the good old USA you'll find them on your dinner plate. Two years ago, the nation's collective stomach churned when people learned they were eating a meat product called "pink slime." Lean, finely textured beef as the industry wanted to call it, was meat scraps that were once earmarked for pet food repurposed for the human dinner table, especially the National School Lunch Program. While the product looked like human intestines, what caused the national revulsion was that pink slime was treated with puffs of ammonia to kill th…

They may be great with call centers, but Indians in the country of India seem pretty sloppy when it comes to making generic and over the counter drugs for the United States and other countries. We get 40% of those drugs from India, and the FDA is screaming at the poor quality control and outright fake drugs coming from them. Little screening is done in India if the FDA doesn't do it, and even when they do, they can't stay forever at each suspect plant. Details, scary as they are, can be found here:http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/15/world/asia/medicines-made-in-india-set-off-safety-worries.html?hpw&rref=health

  11. Julia Child's Potage Parmentier: A Classic Worth Revisiting December 26, 2013 by Nicole Perry yumsugar.com It's fun to keep up with the latest trends, but I like to think that classic dishes are just that for a reason: they're always in fashion. To many, it doesn't get more classic than the grand dame of French cookery, Julia Child. So it only seems fitting to crack the spine on her seminal masterpiece, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and get searching to find a recipe of hers to make time and time again. Not too surprisingly, flipping through the pages of pithy prose and detailed instructions provided ample inspiration — one could easily spend a year dev…

Unhealthiest Fast-Food Fries in America By Elsa Säätelä18 hours ago It's highly likely that the menu at a fast-food restaurant will include french fries, and it's also quite likely that you will order them. French fries might have a French name, but they are a quintessential fast-food staple in America. The simple recipe of sliced potatoes that are deep-fried and salted is one of the most common side dishes served in fast-food establishments. Though they're often thought of as the perfect companion to a burger, they can also be enjoyed on their own as a snack or even used to perk up another dish (like on pizza or in a sandwich — yes that exists). Apple Cores Are a Myth You can eat the whole apple. Americans could be throwing away $13.2 billion. James Hamblin The Atlantic Nov 15 2013, 12:14 PM ET What do you think an apple core is? What's the thing we throw away? It is a ghost. If you eat your apples whole, you are a hero to this ghost. If you do not, you are barely alive. Come experience vitality. Earlier this year, in "How to Eat Apples Like a Boss," a video by Foodbeast, the Internet was promised the gift of confidence in apple-eating. Elie Ayrouth ate an apple starting at the bottom, proceeding to up to the top, and finishing with a wink to the camera, as bosses do. Eating as such, Foodbeast said, the…

That’s what a recent post on the employee resource website McDonald’s provides for its workers. And in case an employee still didn’t get the message that they are definitely talking about McDonald’s food, the post displays a picture of a burger and fries – the company’s specialty. “Fast foods are quick, reasonably priced, and readily available alternatives to home cooking. While convenient and economical for a busy lifestyle, fast foods are typically high in calories, fat, saturated fat, sugar, a…

Hepatitis C, a Silent Killer, Meets Its Match By ANDREW POLLACK Published: November 4, 2013 The New York Times Determined to get rid of the hepatitis C infection that was slowly destroying his liver, Arthur Rubens tried one experimental treatment after another. None worked, and most brought side effects, like fever, insomnia, depression, anemia and a rash that “felt like your skin was on fire.” But this year, Dr. Rubens, a professor of management at Florida Gulf Coast University, entered a clinical trial testing a new pill against hepatitis C. Taking it was “a piece of cake.” And after three months of treatment, the virus was cleared from his body at last. “I had…

Some Fruits Are Better Than Others By Nikolas Bakalar The New York Times September 4, 2013 Eating fruits is good for you, but new research suggests that some fruits may be better than others, and that fruit juice is not a good substitute. Recent studies have found that eating a greater variety, but not a greater quantity, of fruit significantly reduces the risk for Type 2 diabetes. This made researchers wonder whether some fruits might have a stronger effect than others. Using data from three large health studies, they tracked diet and disease prospectively over a 12-year period in more than 185,000 people, of whom 12,198 developed Type 2 d…

Why I changed my mind on weed By Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN Chief Medical Correspondent updated 8:54 AM EDT, Thu August 8, 2013 (CNN) -- Over the last year, I have been working on a new documentary called "Weed." The title "Weed" may sound cavalier, but the content is not. I traveled around the world to interview medical leaders, experts, growers and patients. I spoke candidly to them, asking tough questions. What I found was stunning. Long before I began this project, I had steadily reviewed the scientific literature on medical marijuana from the United States and thought it was fairly unimpressive. Reading these papers five years ago, it was hard to make a case for medi…
