Had my regular checkup the other day and my doctor has been after me to get a colonoscopy for the last year. I finally acquiesced and agreed despite my intense fears of the unknown. I don't know anyone who has had one that I can talk to about the procedure to alleviate my fears. So can anyone here tell me about the experience and was it as bad as you thought or not so much? I've scheduled it for a month from now, which may have been a mistake but I figure I need some time to get mentally prepared. Yes, I am a big sissy when it comes to these types of things and I readily admit it. Nevertheless, be brutally honest if you have had this procedure as I would rather know…

This started as a response to Four Aces's thread about morning show talking head diet of the week, but I wanted as many to see it as might need to... Calories in VS. calories burned. That's it. There is no miracle diet advice that will magically make us able to eat 4k+ calories a day and lose weight, save spending 16 hours a day killing ourselves at the gym. And watching morning shows is especially unproductive. They specialize in bullshit diet advice and "breakthroughs" that contradict each other day to day. It's not about anything remotely like providing medical advice, their only drive in the world is ratings--so that their advertisers will buy slots to sell you…

Hi, Everyone; I'm Gemini and I just turned 37....I know don't say it....But; that's life. Anywho; I work out about 10 to 15 mins a day and that's it. My key is intensity and eating right. I use very light to moderate weights and I never repeat the same exercise on same day for that duration of time period that I work out. I do about 15 to 20 reps; it's easy on the joints and helps tone and condition the muscle. Then other day's I use my punching bag for a duration of time; go swimming, go biking, go hiking: and try to have lots of sex....lol. Believe or not; sex is a great exercise...

Well, just what we need. A squirrel in California has the plague. Should you be worried? The Black Death is popping up in wild animals and pets in the Western United States By Adrianne Jeffries on July 25, 2013 01:57 pm The Verge aThis patient has symptoms of septicemic plague including necrosis of the fingers caused by gangrene. Health officials in Los Angeles County announced yesterday that a squirrel found covered in fleas has tested positive for bubonic plague, the scourge that develops into the deadly pneumonic plague known as the Black Death and wiped out an estimated 200 million people in Europe during the 14th century. Last month, two pet dogs in New Mexico…

Great recipe with a super sauce - the amount of calories really depends on how much olive oil one adds to the sauce - I like a drizzle of toasted sesame oil for a bit of smoky flavor and less olive oil. 12 oz green beans 2 t Dijon mustard 2 T lemon juice 1 T extra virgin olive oil 1 T shallot 1/4 t ground black pepper 1 T parsley Steam the green beans, broccoli, cauliflower or whatever veggie for maybe 6-8 minutes or longer, just until they start to get a bit tender. While the beans steam, combine the rest of the ingredients in a small bowl. Drain the veggis and toss with the sauce and serve immediately. Can also be eaten cold. I think this is absolutely right. I love to bake. (Food! Brain cells too of course.) Can baking improve mental health? The woman behind the Depressed Cake Shop believes it can, and is hoping her pop-up shop will get people talking about it as well as raising money for mental health charities Huma Qureshi The Guardian, Wednesday 3 July 2013 13.00 EDT Gloomy grey lemon-flavoured macaroons from the Depressed Cake Shop. Photograph: Safiyah Kelly They say baking soothes the soul. How can it not? There is something so reassuring about the ritual – quietly weighing out butter, sugar, flour, cracking eggs, whisking, beating and folding. "If you're feeling a littl…

Patients HIV-free for now after transplant By Saundra Young, CNN updated 10:30 AM EDT, Wed July 3, 2013 STORY HIGHLIGHTS Two men show no sign of HIV after bone marrow transplants But experts say it's too early to know if the two are cured The transplant isn't a viable option for the vast majority of patients (CNN) -- Two more HIV patients have no signs of the virus in their blood following bone marrow transplants, according to the Boston researchers who treated them. However, experts stopped short of calling the two cured and said the treatment is not a viable option for the majority of HIV patients. The findings were presented Wednesday at the International AIDS…

My sister sent this to me. I have fallen in love with this meal. It tastes great and is great for you. Give it a try if you have time. Root vegetables (with the exception of potatoes and carrots) are some of the most overlooked and under-appreciated foodstuffs around. But these nutritional storehouses are hidden treasures worthy of your notice. Not only are they available in winter when other vegetables are hard to find, they are also very inexpensive. Experiment with turnips, rutabagas, beets and parsnips, and learn what they have to offer in taste and versatility. Rutabaga (also known as swede) is an accidental vegetable - the result of a chance hybridization of turni…

What was spectacular? Incredible? Like nothing else? While posting on another thread in the politics forum, why would Edward Snowden fly from Hong Kong to Moscow, my thoughts turned to Russian edibles - of course, caviar blinis and frozen vodka - my mind then leaped to one of the best meals of my life, about 30 years ago in St, Moritz, Switzerland, at the La Marmite Restaurant for lunch, on the Corviglia, stopping for a luncheon during a beautiful day on the slopes with caviar blinis, gravlax with horseradish sauce and dill, and of course, some frozen vodkas.

Wine-tasting: it's junk scienceExperiments have shown that people can't tell plonk from grand cru. Now one US winemaker claims that even experts can't judge wine accurately. What's the science behind the taste? David Derbyshire The Observer, Saturday 22 June 2013 Some academics have cast doubt on the ability of professional tasters to judge wines consistently. Photograph: A G Holesch/Getty Images/Imagebroker RF Every year Robert Hodgson selects the finest wines from his small California winery and puts them into competitions around the state. And in most years, the results are surprisingly inconsistent: some whites rated as gold medallists in one contest d…

So many mixed messages, On one of the morning news shows they were interviewing the founder of a study regarding dieting. His take its better to eat 2 big meals than what is currently the normal for dieting of 6 small meals. Then he went on to clarify, that the study results were only for overweight people who have type 2 diabetes. The interviewer then asks so if you are overweight and have type 2 diabetes and want to lose weight your best bet is to eat 2 big meals instead of 6 small ones? The researcher's answer was a quick and solid no, Huh? WTF? She tried to get him to explain further but it just began to sound like a bad train wreck.

One-third of people don’t use soap when washing their hands, researchers say National Monitor, Rina Shah | June 23, 2013 According to a new study by Carl Borchgrevink, associate professor at Michigan State University, only 5 percent of people wash their hands well enough to kill germs that cause infections and illnesses. The researchers working on the study visited bathrooms all over East Lansing, Michigan, which is considered to be a college town. They observed the hand-washing efforts of 3,700 people that went to the bathroom. Each observed individual was categorized as either “college-age” or “non-college-age” and their hand-washing habits were watched without …

Actually pizza can be made more healthful (or less) but I don't think it will ever be an integral part of the food pyramid. However, if catsup is a vegetable, why not pizza as something good for you. Actually I don't eat pizza more than 4 or so times a year. Here is the "problem". If I don't have anyone handy or willing to go out for a pizza then I must consider eating one at home. I have never found delivery pizza to be remotely satisfying. Some are better than others but none are that good. Grocery bought frozen pizza is very average at best but can be OK in a pinch. I know folks who buy a basic pizza and then add their own ingredients. Good for them. That c…

Supposedly very healthy and should be eaten at least twice weekly is wild salmon. I cook it in a hot grill pan. First skin side down and then flip it. I start off with some olive oil with some thinly sliced onions and julienned hearts of palm. After a couple of minutes, throw in the fish. 8-10 minutes later pull out the bad boy. I deglaze the pan with bit of white wine and then add some passion fruit juice and when it is hot pour it over the top. For seasoning, I lightly add the combo Montreal seasoning mix that has garlic, red pepper, black pepper and some sea salt. For sides, it's so easy to steam a cauliflower. And then I do a mixture of wild rice and whole grain ri…

WOW - I have become so sick of fast food which I eat exclusively 24/7 I decided today I would try cooking for myself. Its not that I dislike cooking its more I hate cooking for just me, become impatient and hate clean up. So yesterday I went to the grocery store to but a few things. Well breakfast I skipped as I tend to do. Unless you count tea and a orange as cooking Lunch I made a beef pastrami sandwich. Heated up the pastrami put some Swiss cheese on it with deli mustard and a little bit of cole slaw. Potato chips and a soda and felt pretty full when done. Dinner I decided to make burgers. Bought some ground sirloin dosed it in woschester sauce with pepper and gar…

The company, based in Oak Brook, Ill., says the new burgers will replace its meatier Angus Third Pounders, which were among the most expensive items on its menu at around $4 to $5. The Quarter Pounders will come in two of the same varieties as the Angus burgers — Bacon and Cheese and Deluxe. The third option will be Habanero Ranch. http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/mcdonalds-adding-3-new-quarter-pounders-as-it-phases-out-third-pound-angus-burgers/2013/05/13/059c1986-bbe7-11e2-b537-ab47f0325f7c_story.html Also has anybody tried their new wraps. I checked out the chicken and bacon wrap and thought it was pretty good. A nice change if you are burned out on burgers.

I was watching PBS this morning and this diet came on. It seemed to make a lot of sense to me. Anyone else heard about it or tried it? I have heard about people who limit their permanent caloric intake to 800kcal/day but nothing like this with 2 or 3 days at 500kcal for women and 600kcal for men and the other 4 or 5 days at 2000kcal/day. Here's one review from Amazon: I've never written a review before, but after trying the Fast Diet for almost 2 months, I felt compelled to share my experience. I've tried them all, from Atkins to Zone & everything in-between, but I feel like I've finally found an eating plan I'll be following for life. I didn't have a huge amoun…
