Kamala Harris' Battle Against Internet Sex

Recommended Posts

  • Members

As Attorney General of California, Kamala Harris took the lead in prosecuting things like "revenge porn". She did n't support the law that gave Internet sites' owners protections from things posted on their sites by others- nude pictures, for example. Then she took on Backpage and was instrumental in getting it closed down due to its sex ads. All of this helps her get elected to the Senate, where, after a few days in office, she declares for President. But now, however, sex on the internet doesn't seem to interest her at all. She's not active with fellow Congressmen carrying on her work from California.

Her Presidential campaign is off to a great start. Did Backpage die for her to rise?

The title of this thread appears biased and extremely misleading. In other words, fake news. The article, on the other hand, is an interesting read.

Woe to the politician who remotely appears soft on crime. Trump and his Mini-Me pug, Stephen Miller, will eat the wimp-pol for breakfast.

If Kamala Harris helped Jennifer Lawrence fight back when nude photos of her were illegally posted on the internet without consent, mothers and young women around the world will view Harris as a savior. If Kamala Harris prevented one young girl from being sex-trafficked by helping to shut down Backpage, then millions of women may support her in the voting booth.

I'm quite confident Kamala Harris does not care about adults who choose to meet other adults for sex on the internet. I'm also quite confident Kamala Harris feels sorry for old, lonely, gay men who have come to rely on the internet, and escorting, for erotic stimulation in their elder years. The internet has been a free-fall of free speech for quite some time. With new legal challenges that continually erupt from the internet's ugly Dark Side, the free-ride may be coming to an end.

Everyone knows all it takes is one bad apple to spoil the bunch. As long as sex trafficking of minors and forced prostitution are linked to the escorting business, the "free" internet will be a petri dish of legal challenges for years to come.

If I were a young parent today, I honestly don't know what I could do to protect my young children from the internet. The things that can be easily seen on a computer today did not exist when I had a young son. Bad actors exist, particularly in the sex industries, and it's a prosecutor's job to fight the bad actors in the court of law.

Woe to the politician who remotely appears soft on crime.

The death of backpage, which did not police either underage or trafficking, was hardly a loss.

Here we still have, unmolested by legal authority:

In general, being soft on crime isn't good for a politician, but it depends on the crime. The Baltimore DA just announced that she won't prosecute any more marijuana cases. She has overturned a law all by herself.

Kamala Harris was DA in San Francisco. There they don't prosecute the homeless for any crime short of murder. The voters would have a fit. A multitude of minor crimes are not prosecuted there, mostly small thefts, shoplifting, damaging property. So the prosecutor is soft on crime, and the voters like it. It's just a matter of degree.

As for Backpage, it in itself isn't missed so much, but Rentboy is gone and now Tumblr. There is a war on sex. Kamala Harris showed no interest in it once she achieved her goal of becoming a Senator. She is strictly a politician, all about herself. She won no laurels in my opinion . I can't imagine electing someone so green as President. Like Trump!

Or like Obama? :P

Yes, although I voted for him and liked him. He has charisma, unlike Hillary. She might have been a better president, but I suspect she would compete with Trump for self-enrichment in office.

Recreational marijuana is now legal in 10 states; medical marijuana is legal in 33. Please tell me we're not comparing marijuana smoking to sex-trafficking of a minor. Sex trafficking of a minor will NEVER be legal in the U.S.

That's a matter of creative interpretation.

Overactive imagination. I hated Rentboy. I only discovered Tumblr a few months ago. I never visited Backpage. What value do these things have to men of substance? Their absence is meaningless to my life.

Escorting is the world's oldest profession. It has survived a lot of trauma and drama. Political tolerance of adult sex ebbs and flows. I fail to see a war, other than the war against Trump (which I support).

Like I said, your bias shows.

I'm enjoying Kamala Harris. I'm glad she's contributing to the discussion.

I've decided to write a check to her and Cory Booker's campaign. I really like the fact that two, smart, African American politicians entered the race. I think both of these candidates have a lot of heart and soul.

They may have a lot of soul but I am hoping they are NOT connecting with mainstream America.  Being the Libertarian Conservative that I am, I am hoping for summertime only Congressional meetings.  Alas, that likely was gone many years ago.

Does no one see any parallel with Rome?

Best regards,

Mainstream America, at least those who voted for Trump, have no soul. They sold whatever soul they thought they had to embrace the devil. A sad sack of scared, racist hypocrites.

Libertarian Conservative

That's a quiz I hope I never have to take, especially on a board like this one.

The ancient city of Rome or the Roman Empire? Imperial Rome or Republican? Very different dates. The Roman Empire lasted almost 1500 years. Some Vaticanists put the date at 2700+, and still counting. Only the first two centuries of the empire's existence were peaceful and politically stable. Pax Romana.

Without the GAY, I see Nero in Trump. Perhaps even a little Marie-Antoinette, which is the only French culture he could possess.

I realize a lot of people like to cling to the notion of history repeating itself. After all, mankind doesn't seem to change much. We have changed, however. The role of women in American culture has changed dramatically for the better. And I expect it will continue to change.

Ancient Rome was male dominated, out to conquer, steal, and plunder anything in its path of growth. Some may see America this way. I don't.

Are we forgetting the Democrats were the original racists?  Some think they still are.

I wish history did not repeat itself but unfortunately it does.  I also do not see America as all conquering.  The parallel I was drawing was offering all things to all people without regard to the true cost.

Best regards,

RA1

Unfortunately, racism will always exist, no matter what party affiliation you are. I prefer to live in the present. Living pre-Civil War will not help you get health care (or make you look younger).

Not all history repeats itself.

The costs can be calculated and forecast. Businesses large and small do this every day. America has plenty of smart mathematicians. As long as the wealth disparity in this country continues to grow, the poorer among us will eventually REVOLT. That history WILL repeat itself.

Trump's DEBT is ASTOUNDING to me. Shame on the Republican Party, and that joke known as The Tea Party, for being bold-faced liars/hypocrites, just like their fearless leader.

I agree that Republicans are liars and hypocrites but equally so are the Democrats.

Did you not notice that Obama added trillions to the national debt?  Who ever adds the debt worries me.

I agree that costs can be calculated but our social and welfare programs are beyond anything but meaningless numbers.  That is my comparison to Rome.

Best regards,

RA1

I see little point in participating in a broken record...

Not equally. The details matter.

I own my own business. Sometimes, taking on additional debt makes perfect business sense.

Obama inherited a SERIOUS fiscal meltdown, from a Republican administration. A disaster! IMO, not only did the stimulus package make perfect sense to me, it should have been much larger. The damn thing should have included a bailout to protect homeowners from foreclosure. I'm not talking about the folks who were speculating (flipping) or lost vacation properties. I'm talking about those who owned their homes (primary addresses) for 10 years or longer.

Borrowing when money is at its cheapest is the smartest time to borrow, if you can safely do it. I've done it several times. Asshole McConnell knew, if Obama got more money to do infrastructure, the Dems would be in office for many future terms. McConnell killed success out of spite. Welcome to American Democracy in 2019.

In Ancient Rome, the poor were required to pay public urinal tax. So much for their welfare program working.

I thought we had a separate politics forum

Some members don't like it.

If you enter the board from the Recent Updated column on the right, you can't tell what forum you're in (unless you work extra hard to find out). Too much work for so little pleasure.
