@jason1975 do you remember the name of this eatery? I remember I was also brought to a Myanmar restaurant near Skybar (just further along). It may not be the same one, as “eatery” is not quite the right description for where I visited. It had a stage and patrons took turn singing Myanmar karaoke songs. The boy I was with said a few years ago it would become a Myanmar club late at night. Some customers were having hotpot but we only had beers and after 3 Myanmar girls wouldn’t stop singing (badly) we left. Nonetheless it was an interesting experience.

I am sure you would complain Boracay is too expensive. A friend reported back that Siargao has great surf (read: hot surfers), is still rustic and reasonably priced, and good gay scene

This sounds most likely. Additionally they have probably been accustomed since young to toughing out minor ailments. My ex Cambodian guy did visit the doctor in Cambodia for anything that dragged on. But generally these guys are young, fit, exercise often so they bounce back fast. Wish I could claim the same. Also has anyone tried the generic cough and cold medications or antibiotics that can be purchased over the counter in Thailand? They are far stronger than anything I’ve ever taken, in most countries they would be prescription only and last resort. I can’t remember the name of what I took, it was recommended to me by a pharmacist and it knocked me out cold.

I mentioned this in a different post. Apart from the name, new Telephone has no similarities to the old one, which was a farang friendly pub-restaurant with prominent Soi 4 frontage. It was an iconic spot for gay cruising and people watching. The new Telephone is targeted at Thai customers in the after hours, chose a tucked away locale and made their frontage as non-descript as possible, an IYKYK spot. Apart from the name there is nothing in common. There isn’t even a telephone in sight. Circus was tipped to inherit the Telephone mantle which they more or less appeared to have done (I have my doubts about the effectiveness of running a cabaret-type show, having queens drag you in)

I had a similar experience. My current regular guy has an extremely perfect set of teeth. When I first saw him on stage I was convinced he had veneers, since they are far cheaper in Thailand. After some time together I discovered he actually had incredibly poor dental hygiene, would only give his teeth a perfunctory swipe with the hotel toothbrush. When I went for a professional clean, I insisted he get one too and then it transpired he had never used dental floss in his life.

There are several Facebook groups for expats in Cambodia and expats/foreigners in Battambang where rentals seem to be discussed or offered. Also Reddit’s Cambodia sub forum has a number of English speaking expats, some of whom own condos or know how to navigate real estate. Look up these resources, maybe leave a post with your questions, and see if they shed any light. Meanwhile, poor Cam! Wishing him a speedy recovery.

It’s not a bar at all, it’s a late night restaurant with live music. The boys (and girls) bring their customers there to drink when the bars close. There is also a private karaoke room. You may be able to find some bar boys hanging about but no guarantees. Some waiters are not averse to sitting down with customers. But I’ve seen an old farang come in, order some food then storm out after 30 minutes as he wasn’t offered any company.

They are the same owner. And yes I believe Pride is licensed as a restaurant not a bar.

Good to hear you and Cam are living life to the fullest. I believe Cambodia has wonderful beaches too such as Koh Rong and Otres near Sihanoukville. I would advocate for Siem Reap as it would be easier landing for you as a foreigner compared to Battambang. At least spend the initial month or two there first to acclimate. Also having time to explore the city and Angkor Wat instead of being on a rushed holiday is a luxury that cannot be overstated.

Interesting to hear. I was on Larn earlier this year during semi-high season and Tawaen was packed with all kinds including the above mentioned Indian male groups travelling sans wife and kids. The ruckus of shouting and jetski engines gave Boy a headache so we had to beat a retreat. Also the much publicised kidnapping of that Chinese actor. I’ve had to explain to Chinese friends more than once that was a result of answering shady job ads, rather than Thailand being unsafe. Similarly the case of the pretty Chinese influencer who vanished in Cambodia and was found begging by the roadside. I discussed this with a Cambodian boy who pointed out that it was a case of “Chinese scamming Chinese”

They are all in Phuket, particularly around Patong where cheap accommodation is plentiful, and there are also shops and entertainment. Walking down Patong Beach Road, if not paying close attention, it can feel like being in India - Indian families with small children, strollers, multiple relatives on the same excursion. Moving further afield from Patong, the profile becomes significantly Russian. I am writing this now from Phuket airport where even the official immigration signage is in Russian. Went on a boat trip to the islands several days ago. Knowing that it is rainy season I made some advance preparations (planning the trip as early as possible, ensuring not to be on an overcrowded boat). As I was about to leave the final island, the skies opened. A longtail boat, clearly one of the cheaper rides, packed full of Indians (likely just one single family) arrived, wearing floaties and a mishmash of traditional garb and swimwear. However by then the rain and winds were picking up and the women and children were refusing to disembark, holding up the queue of longtail boats trying to pick up their own passengers. Mind you they were all in swimwear so clearly they had intended to get wet at some point. The Thai crew insisted they alight so the other boats would not get held up, and above the howling of the children and arguing of the adults I heard one crew shout rather sarcastically “Welcome to Thailand!”. The men rushed on to the floating pier and elbowed those of us standing under the small tent shelter into the rain. I had already been swimming so I didn’t mind but the irony of coming out to the islands specifically to not get wet was rather striking.

This all sounds very promising. I’m sure his mother is mostly overjoyed and relieved that he’s found himself a stable partnership with someone that’s more “able”, not just in the financial sense but in the ways of the world, and able to give him experiences above and beyond what he can achieve for himself.

Cambodia has quite alot that’s also available in Thailand but they seem to be short on pharmaceuticals and skincare (they love whitening stuff). I seem to recall wanting to buy something very basic from a pharmacy in central Siem Reap and having to pay a ridiculous price since it was imported from France, when the same item was available for a fraction of the price in Thailand. Yes I used to gift my ex guy nice bottles of Black or Gold Label to bring back since it was quite a flex for him to have premium whisky to contribute to family or friends gatherings. Nice perfume for his mother would be appreciated I’m sure. Edit: I remember now, I was buying water proof large plasters for small wounds, the kind with sterile gauze.

Would add to this the importance of establishing yourself as “partner” or “dear friend” (as suggested above) - anything that implies even footing, or as balanced as it can get in a fundamentally unbalanced situation. Not “sugar daddy” “customer” as the latter is then expected to contribute refrigerators and motorcycles, if not immediately, almost certainly at some point in the future. As well as the being the financial cushion for unexpected medical expenses. Again speaking from personal experience. Occasionally I do wonder what ever happened to that motorcycle. Wouldn’t recommend it.

I’m a bit confused by your post. I rarely carry cash in Bangkok and Pattaya, my tap to pay is accepted everywhere or at least the physical card. The exception is BTS and boys, and maybe small items at 7-11. I even pay by card in the bars. I never have more than 1000-2000 baht on my person at any time unless I’m travelling outside the major cities.

Haven’t you heard of the increasing number of host bars in Bangkok? Quite a few of the best looking gay for pay bar workers have moved on to those. That testifies to the volume of women who pay heavily to drink with a handsome guy. Additionally they are mostly locals, so that’s just the Thai female demographic, not even counting the Chinese. Then there’s Fake Club and another newer club whose name starts with A but escapes me right now. The business model of the male go go where gay customers pay cover and buy one beer to choose someone dancing on stage for sex is dying out. There hasn’t been a new, successful male go go in years. Grindr plays a role too.

Many of these girls also work in bars. It’s sort of like how actors can marry each other and not mind if their partner films intimacy scenes with another actor, they know it’s strictly professional. Though of course hiccups can happen (Brangelina comes to mind). Generally they mind far less if their guy is going with other guys. Vice versa it makes me wonder how bar guys are so relaxed about the fact their girlfriends are off with different men all the time. I once met a European woman who was in a relationship with a Cambodian bar boy and was stepmothering his two kids.

It’s really making me wonder what the original translation of “brothel” was and if the boy is Thai or possibly a different language speaker such as Cambodian Most boys refer to their bars as “raan” ร้าน When I was a newbie I used to chat with a boy each day, until around 8 or 9 pm he would inform me “now go to shop” For a long time I was puzzled. Why did he need to inform me he was going shopping? What shop, this late at night? 7-11? Later on I found out that “raan” literally translates to shop but can be used as a catch-all for a variety of retail outlets, such as pharmacy “shop that sells medicine” grocery store, restaurants. Additionally appending “khaay” (sells) followed by the name of the product defines its identity. Is a brothel then a “shop selling boys”? But Google translate says no, a brothel is ซ่อง “song”
