Do you think a big part of that has to do with the fact that you are fluent in Spanish? The reason Brazil grew so quickly on me is that the language is something that I can learn whereas Thai was just something that was never going to happen. With each trip to Brazil my Portuguese has improved and with it new opportunities have become available.

So, anyway I’m about to head home to Merica and real life. I did not post a trip report because I spent most of my time here attempting to create a new gay boy with Beautiful Creature (no luck yet but we will keep trying). In any case though, thanks to my improved Português and a few too many caipirinhas he now knows that I own a small mostly unused apartment in a nice section of a major America city that pre-pandemic I needed in order to maintain my job but, now, well there were some benefits of COVID…. Anyway, Beautiful Creature is very interested in coming to America and I am willing to do what I can to support him. The research I have done suggests that if he has a “normal” job in Brazil to return to (as in other than regularly fucking tourists in exchange for reais) and I write him a letter of support, there is a decent chance that he will be able to get a tourist visa for travel to the United States. I already know this is a bad idea so, please save your keystrokes, but if anybody out there does have experience with a situation like this and would care to assess my assessment of Beautiful Creature’s odds of getting a visa, please share. Someday, I hope to be able to write a sentence like that last one in Portuguese. If it matters, Beautiful Creature’s inglês is not perfect but I have no doubt that he would be able function in America without help.

Greetings from Etta Bar in Rio de Janeiro. I met Brian here earlier today. He is not a 400 lbs man that lives in his parents’ basement in Poughkeepsie, NY. The pictures are fake though. In any case though, Brian is not somebody that I would travel to Brazil to see normally but he was cute and seemed eager to go back to my hotel and I’m generally of the mind that sex is usually a good idea so, anyway, we went back to my hotel and he bottomed for me and came while I was inside him and got cum all over the sheets which was messy but also kinda sorta hot. So, I did try watching Bom Dia Verônica in Portuguese (thx @BryBro) but quickly figured out that I was not ready for that yet so I watch and enjoyed and recommend to my friends the English language version. I’m telling you this because I am in Rio now and had a conversation yesterday that went something like this: Me: “Your English has improved a lot since I saw you last in December.” Beautiful Creature: “I watch all my shows in English now.” Me: “What shows have you been watching?” Beautiful Creature: “Euphoria and The Umbrella Academy.” I’m pretty sure that a couple weeks ago, I posted something about America’s ability to export culture in response to a question about why Brazil (and apparently Columbia) have developed cultures that make them very, very, very attractive travel destinations. This is crazy though. Yes, Euphoria centers around a teenager addicted to opioids and, unfortunately, I am all too sure that both America and Brazil have teenagers that fit that bill so I guess it follows that Beautiful Creature could understand and relate to Euphoria but The Umbrella Academy….? Plot points there include the Vietnam War and the assassination of JFK. I didn’t live through either event but I got me an education in American schools that definitely covered them. Beautiful Creature on the other hand… Me: “I’m surprised you like The Umbrella Academy.” Beautiful Creature: “Luther is muito sexy.” Me: “I assume you mean before the operation that disfigured him. That doesn’t surprise me. Tom Hopper is your type. I think he is regrettably straight unfortunately though.” Beautiful Creature: “I don’t understand.” Me: “What did you think of the part when Klaus went back in time to the Vietnam War?” Beautiful Creature: “Vietnam is near China and Thailand.” Anyway, if I come back in a couple months and he tells me that he is really into the movie Watchmen, I am definitely calling bullshit. Until then though, I would be curious to know if the non-Americans reading this watch shows and movies such as The Umbrella Academy and Watchmen (or Hamilton for that matter) that involve heavy doses American history. Does America export its history too? Whatever happened to watching episodes of Friends on repeat to learn English?

My understanding most of which comes from talking with Beautiful Creature is that PrEP is readily available and free in Brazil for anybody that has a penis and likes to sleep with other people that also have a penis. For what it is worth, that’s also the case here in Merica too, oddly enough.

During my last trip to Rio in December I met Brian on Grindr. As soon as he learned that I was American, he started writing in English - English that was clearly not the product of a translation app - and told me that he was 19, lived in Rio and basically that he really loved to bottom for tall, older white guys. Now, yes, this is Brazil which is a magical place where amazing things do happen and I also do happen to be a tall, older white guy but this is also Grindr and this isn’t my first rodeo. Brian is not a Brazilian name that I have ever heard before, the English was on par with my own and, well, if something is too good to be true…. But, did I mention there were lots of pictures and that I like pictures? In any case, I eventually asked Brian for his WhatsApp to which he replies that he doesn’t want to share that yet. At this point, I become almost certain that “Brian” is probably the proverbial 400 lbs man sitting in his parents’ basement that gets off by doing stuff like this but for whatever reason I don’t block him and he not only doesn’t block me but continues to periodically send sexy pictures to me via Grindr for the next couple months. His distance from me also always puts him in Rio whenever I tap on the profile. All of this brings us to a couple days ago when I was on a terribly boring phone call that wouldn’t end and I began chatting with him on Grindr again. He said two and a half things that make me think there is half a chance the profile might be real: Thing One - His real name is Diogo (which is very Brazilian) and that he uses Brian when chatting with foreigners because it’s easier for them. Thing Two - He agreed to meet up with me next week when I am in Rio. To all those concerned about my safety, don’t worry, it’s going to be a public place and I’m still more than a little suspicious about this whole thing so I will be extra cautious when (if) he arrives. Thing Two and One-half - When the topic of PrEP came up he made a joke about only ever having used condoms the handful of times that he has been with women and there not being much of a chance that I will get him pregnant. Apparently, he has been on PrEP for as long as he has been sexually active. This 1) made me feel really, really, really old, and 2) made me feel like “Brian” might really be real since that joke/observation/detail strikes me as something that a 400 lbs man sitting in his parents’ basement in Poughkeepsie, NY gets wrong. Anyway, hopefully I don’t get murdered….

So, Beautiful Creature does speak English - pretty well in fact - and he certainly speaks English better than I speak Portuguese but his vocabulary is limited to all the things you might expect it to be. Conversations in English about stuff like this or the time I suggested owning a small condo in Ipanema and spending about half my time their and he was horrified, well, those are not great. From what I can gather though he does not have a visa to travel to the US currently but does have a female friend that easily got a student visa recently. In any case, I’ll be in Brazil in about 10 days and can just look at his passport myself. He uses it as his primary ID which is something I have always thought was odd since most other guys use the laminated National ID card. If he did have a visa to travel to the US - which he almost certainly does not - would it be stuck/stamped/attached to his passport or a separate document? Vietnam used to put a big sticker in my passport that would be good for X amount of time when I traveled there. Australia on the other hand just sends you an email as I recall after you pay the $20 AUD “travel to Australia fee.” What does Merica do? I feel like we probably issue a separate document that has a bunch of security features to ensure it can’t easily be counterfeited. A América é burra.

Beautiful Creature who most definitely has a passaporte brasileiro, is telling me that he can travel to the United States if I buy him a ticket. Aside from the facts that 1) I am about to travel to Brazil myself and spend a bunch of time with him; 2) my part of the United States is still cold and Brazil is warm and sunny and filled with other very attractive young men (in addition to Beautiful Creature) that generally seem to be okay with having sex with me; and 3) my brief Google research indicates a very difficult to get tourist visa is needed in order for him to travel to the USA from Brazil, is there something I am missing here? Has the United States suddenly started letting gorgeous 25 year olds that say they are not GP but routinely have sex with older men in exchange for money into the country? I think he can travel to Europe (I’m thinking of meeting him in Barcelona in June) but doubt that he could travel to Merica without a visa that most likely will not be granted. Am I wrong?

That said, in what feels like another lifetime at this point when money for textbooks (Do textbooks even still exist?) and beer was much more of a concern than it is today, I did spend some time in front of a camera. Sua pergunta não tem uma resposta. Why are American music, movies, culture, etc. exported worldwide but not imported at anywhere close to the same scale? If you head out to DJ Station in Bangkok 1) the place is named DJ Station rather than something in Thai and 2) for the most part, music with English lyrics will be played even though most of the people there don’t speak English well enough to understand what is being said. As for importing, well, I watched Squid Games last year. That was pretty good. Some, actually, lots of things don’t have an explanation. For what it is worth, I am thankful that absurdly hot Brazilian guys that are two-thirds my age are able to put on an Oscar worthy performance and/or actually like doing gay stuff with me but I have given up trying to understand the phenomenon. There is no explanation. That’s just the way it is. It is of course though the reason that I’ll be going back to 🇧🇷 at the end of this month.
