I think he can travel to Europe (I’m thinking of meeting him in Barcelona in June) but doubt that he could travel to Merica without a visa that most likely will not be granted.  Am I wrong?

 

Does he already have a Visa? They can be good for 10 years.  If he does not have a visa then I think you are right.  The US State department's website says there is 155 day wait for the interview you need to get a visitor visa in Rio. U.S. Visas (state.gov)   There is only a 1 day wait for student/exchange visa's but then he'd have to pay tuition at an american school.  

If it’s just a vacation with him @Novarunner why not invite him to Mexico? Travel will be easy for both of you and you can choose where/when you want to see him.

So, Beautiful Creature does speak English - pretty well in fact - and he certainly speaks English better than I speak Portuguese but his vocabulary is limited to all the things you might expect it to be.  Conversations in English about stuff like this or the time I suggested owning a small condo in Ipanema and spending about half my time their and he was horrified, well, those are not great.  From what I can gather though he does not have a visa to travel to the US currently but does have a female friend that easily got a student visa recently.  In any case, I’ll be in Brazil in about 10 days and can just look at his passport myself.  He uses it as his primary ID which is something I have always thought was odd since most other guys use the laminated National ID card.

If he did have a visa to travel to the US - which he almost certainly does not - would it be stuck/stamped/attached to his passport or a separate document?  Vietnam used to put a big sticker in my passport that would be good for X amount of time when I traveled there.  Australia on the other hand just sends you an email as I recall after you pay the $20 AUD “travel to Australia fee.”  What does Merica do?  I feel like we probably issue a separate document that has a bunch of security features to ensure it can’t easily be counterfeited.  A América é burra.

My recent US visa is stickered to my passport, but as mentioned, its probably diff depending on countries. During my study in US, it also comes with I-20 from university thats has all the information needed by immigration and has to be together with you when entering US.

But im not from brazil so might not be the same.

Brazilians are not visa exempt since Dec 2021 but it might not be that difficult to get one online for tourism. A paper copy is apparently required. In addition the tourist card (FMM) all foreigners must obtain electronically and also needs to be printed off. I don’t recall doing the latter 3 years ago at CDMX, just filling out the paper form waiting in line for immigration.

I already know this is a bad idea so, please save your keystrokes, but if anybody out there does have experience with a situation like this and would care to assess my assessment of Beautiful Creature’s odds of getting a visa, please share.  Someday, I hope to be able to write a sentence like that last one in Portuguese.  If it matters, Beautiful Creature’s inglês is not perfect but I have no doubt that he would be able function in America without help.

Letter of support only works with Fiancé, student and family visas.

If he's going on a Tourist Visa, better he doesn't mention knowing any Americans because the supposition is that he'll stay. 

The wait for a visa appointment in most countries is running about a year, or more.

The problem I can foresee is at Border Control where your ‘Beautiful Creature’ will be quizzed about his trip, where he’s staying for how long and the nature of your relationship. You should certainly rehearse his answers with him in advance of his visit. 
 

I did something similar to what you propose with a blond Argentine muscleboy. I invited to stay with me for 4 weeks in Europe. He never spoke English with me, but he held a senior post in the civil service. He had with him a letter I’d drafted saying we were friends and I’d be responsible for his costs while in Europe, and emphasizing that he’d be returning to his senior job and his flat in Recoleta, Buenos Aires. Life choices are all made within context of our own specific set of current circumstances.  I’ve often thought if I was single & 60ish, that I’d go for a 30yr Brazilian stud as BF.  But, I wouldn’t bring that person to US & get stuck w a myriad of potential problems.  

If you can work remote bc of Covid, why not go to Brazil & try it there ?  The rich (meaning all foreign visitors) do just fine in Brazil and have plenty of security/safety etc.

Even though I desperately want to get out of the US permanently- the vast majority of the world still wants to come here for some unknown reason.  That’s the other part - foreigners coming to US have no idea how toxic and regressive our country is now.  And there’s no way to explain that.  I have Brazilian friends that came here 20 yrs ago & they want out too.  Ditto for the Venezuelans here.
