Some of these nicknames are real English words, written in Thai letters. You can easily recognize them in Thai language, as they often have Garan to mute a letter and Mai Tri tone mark (both of which is rare in Thai words). One would have to look at recordings for nick names over the years, which one appeared parallel with influx of English speaking foreigners into Thailand (Vietnam war and tourism after that).

The vast majority of Taxi drivers I use in Bangkok know their way around town. When I ask Thai people for directions in Thai, I usually get a correct answer or "don't know". Money is bound to enter into the equation if you meet a guy a few times. I am speaking of experience. I had a few non-money encounters in Pattaya, but I would say it's more realistic to expect them in Bangkok.
