A young Thai social media influencer has died soon after being hired for 30,000 baht to guzzle a 350ml bottle of whisky.

Thanakarn Kanthee, aka “Bank Leicester”, 21, was pronounced dead at a hospital at 3.40am on Thursday.

A garland seller who performed improvised rap songs to attract buyers, he had been seen in several videos accepting paid challenges to drink alcohol rapidly in exchange for money.

A video showing Thanakarn drinking quickly and straight from a small whisky bottle amid a cheering crowd at a party has been widely circulated on the internet. Some partygoers were seen filming him on mobile phones.

After completing the paid challenge, Thanakarn looked sick and reportedly vomited before he was taken to hospital where he died later.

One Facebook page showed some partygoers laughing as rescuers rushed Thanakarn to an ambulance on a stretcher. Commenters slammed them for their lack of sympathy.

The influencer had been raised by his grandmother in a Bangkok slum after his parents separated when he was two months old. At the age of seven, he started selling garlands at the Liab Duan flea market on Ram Intra road to provide for himself and his grandmother.

I hate when in bars I see performers or boys offered 100 baht note in exchange for a gulping shot of something strong. Sooner or later it may not end well

Those people who hire him for this should be punished. It's a known danger that drinking too much spirits fast could lead to alcohol poisoning.

I pity the grandmother and hopefully she will be taken care off...

The word influencer gave it away. They're typically not the sharpest pencils in the box.

Police have arrested a man who they say hired a young social media influencer to guzzle a 350ml bottle of whiskey that led to the latter’s death at a party in Chanthaburi

The arrest took place when officers raided the suspect’s house on Saturday in search of evidence that might link him to a gambling website.

Officers from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) and local police in Chanthaburi raided the house of Ekkachart Meephrom, aka “Em Ekkachart”, in tambon Huai Sathon of Tha Mai district in the eastern province.

Mr Ekkachart was in the house during the raid. The officers seized a pistol, bank passbooks, mobile phones and SIM cards for examination to find out whether he was connected to the gambling website curriculum51.

During the operation, the officers also informed him that they had obtained an arrest warrant for him on a charge of recklessness causing death in connection with the alcohol-drinking challenge that led to the death of Thanakarn Kanthee, 27.

In the old days, there used to be drinking competitions  at my University,  Oxford, they were banned after a couple of deaths.
