I do not use it for financial transactions when I travel, so the only time it comes out of my pocket is for sending/receiving quick messages via text, LINE, WhatsApp, etc. or if I happen to be using the maps app trying to find a specific location. I don't use it enough when out and about to worry about needing a battery pack. Quote

I choose trousers with pockets -- as many as possible -- and my habit now is that my phone is always in one particular pocket, unless I take it out to read/send messages. It goes back into the pocket immediately after. It's a front pocket, not a back pocket - which is possibly the worst place to put one's phone. Not only will the phone be easily lifted out by a thief, one needs to take it out of the back pocket each time one sits down... and leave it on a table, car seat or somewhere else. In Thailand, an additional problem is the power bank. I find that I need to have one with me when I am out and about for most of the day (and maybe into the evening). Fortunately, I tend to go about with a backpack, so there's space for that too. I do have a small backpack i used to carry umbrella, bottle water and powerbank. After that incident, Ive been very careful about whereabout of my phone and yes, i do put them in my front pocket. Usually when I misplace something, its probably due to me trying to quickly do few things at the same time. In this case, I was opening my wallet to pay the bolt driver, while forgetting that I had my phone on my hand prior to that. So I probably put down my phone on the seat while reaching my wallet. Looking back, Ive never lost my phone until this incident. I have lost my wallet once when I was a school kid, and once in college, and in both cases, manage to recover back both wallets. I have lost my passport once in my life during first day of travel and that was horrible. My most memorable incident was when I dropped my camera somewhere in the field back in college, and somehow recovered back a year later by junior colleague who went to the same trip and to our surprise that camera still work just fine. Thats how they know it is my camera. Ruthrieston, vinapu and bkkmfj2648 3 Quote

Both times it was because I had a bad habit of putting the phone in my lap while driving around town. I would forget it was there, then get out of the car and the phone would fall onto the ground. I wouldn't realize until some time later, but it was long gone by the time I discovered it was missing and returned to the car. You would think after doing it the first time I would have learned my lesson. Thankfully, I have never experienced the loss of wallet or passport (knock on wood). Quote

I am surprised that a well-travelled person like @floridarob is asking this question. Haven't you encountered the term "mobile phone" before? "Cellphone" is used in the USA and, as I vaguely recall, Canada (perhaps a member from Canada can confirm?), but across Europe, Asia, Africa and Australasia, it is "mobile phone". In Spain it is "telefono movil", and I believe it is the same term used in Spanish-speaking Latin America (I may stand corrected). Google translate says it is "celular" in Brazil, but "telemovel" in Portugal. The Japanese term 携帯電話 (Geitaidenwa) also translates literally to mobile phone "Handphone" is a usage I have only ever encountered in Singapore and Malaysia, and it has struck me as a direct translation of the term I hear in China "手机" (shouji) which literally means "hand phone". However, I remember seeing on an Indonesian-language poster the term "telepon genggam", which is also a direct translation of "hand phone". But surely, in this day and age when the landline telephone is virtually obsolete, the simpler term "phone" will do when referring to the hand-held device? floridarob 1 Quote

I was going to reply with this..... it's just called a phone in most places now, I've heard Mobile lots.... was the handphone that I never heard, not to be confused with a happy ending hand job. jimmie50 1 Quote
