Agreed. The point I was trying to get across, however, is that even if you take the above atrocities and put them all together, they do not amount to anything like the depth to which the Nazis sank.

Yes, as I said, the list goes on. Indonesia,  a couple of million. On the genocide front, one not so well known  episode, at least i didn't know about it,  was the civil war in Ukraine,  during WW 2, when ethic Ukrainians killed over 300,000 Polish  Ukrainians. Ethnic cleansing again.

Yes, those things happen. I think you like to go to Thailand. Haven’t people been robbed and murdered there? As I said, I’ve never had a problem in Mexico and never felt unsafe.

I’m just saying, pointing out one case does not prove that Mexico is any more dangerous than Thailand, Brazil or Colombia.

Mexico City used to be very unsafe. The first time I went there, I was terrified and only in transit, so I stayed at the airport. But I have been many times since, and have not had a problem.  Meanwhile, I was robbed twice in Bangkok. Once a guy I brought back to my hotel took $300 out of my wallet while I was in the shower (he left me $300 fortunately, which I needed for my next trip). The other time, I had a chain stolen at Babylon without even realizing it. You might not get held at gunpoint in Thailand, but you can definitely get robbed.

sometimes you can. Years ago I brought Arena guy for overnighter to BBB Inn.  Only after he left in the morning I realized that all that time there was 7000 baht on the desk in more or less plain view, left untouched. Blind guy and stupid customer story

In Rome it was basically my fault. I had heard about small groups of street urchins who would try to rob tourists. They were young - probably aged only between 10 and 14 - and always carried a large piece of white cardboard. As they got near an individual, the cardboard would be raised to a horizontal position so that you could not see hands. Anything in pockets was likely to disappear. I knew of this trick. When they picked my pocket I was there in the hottest month of August and so was wearing a pair of very thin cotton pants with 6 pockets. Aware of the little gangs, I spread my cash around the pockets so there was not much in each. On the Corso I saw one of these gangs approaching me. But they had regular brown cardboard. No idea why this did not ring an alarm bell, but the next thing I knew was the cardboard was horizontal and I felt a hand in one pocket. I quickly reached around to grab the hand, but of course what little Lire it had grabbed had been passed to another of the group. The hand was empty.  Live and learn!

In Barcelona I was at the airport waiting for a flight. I needed to go to the toilet and so was seated on a stall with my jeans around my ankles. There was a gap between the stalls and I neither saw nor felt a hand slip into a back pocket and steal my wallet. Again, live, learn and be more careful!

Wallet is mother of all misery, it's why I don't use one as it makes easy to lose everything in one go, be it stolen, dropped by accident or forgotten on the table

I learned that lesson. Point is, I was robbed twice in Thailand but never in Mexico. And I had other close calls.

I just chose the most popular on this forum. Most European countries are dangerous if we’re using robbery as the measure. Sure, it may not be at gunpoint, but losing all of your money, passport and especially phone can be devastating. I’ve never worried about pickpockets in Mexico. I am extra careful in Europe.

Pickpocketing in CDMX is alive and well, wherever there are crowds of people:  Metro, Metrobus, busy streets, etc.  Cellphones in particular, grabbed from the hands of people paying attention.  I know it was a special circumstance, but during the FIFA celebrations/gatherings in the city a great many people reported theft of their cellphones.

Well, as I said, I have never worried about it. Maybe because I generally avoid crowded spaces, and don’t spend a lot of time in CDMX. To be clear, this whole conversation started with the racist who was disparaging Mexicans and Thais and somehow became about the dangers of Mexico because two Chinese guys were robbed at gunpoint. My point is simply that in my experience, I was robbed twice in Bangkok, and had a few other close calls, but nothing has ever happened to me in Mexico and my first trip there was in 1983. This is my experience. I love Mexico. I recognize there are dangerous places there, just like there are dangerous places in many US cities and elsewhere in the world, but in general, Mexicans are warm, hardworking and trustworthy.
