  2. The DOJ's 'New York Times problem' with Assange By HADAS GOLD | politico.com 11/26/13 4:39 PM EST WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will likely not face charges in the United States for publishing classified documents, because the Justice Department would not be able to do so without also prosecuting media organizations who do the same, The Washington Post reports. Calling it a "New York Times problem," Justice officials told the Post that if they indicted Assange, they'd also have to prosecute the Times, The Washington Post, and The Guardian for publishing classified leaked material from people like Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden. A formal decision has yet to be issued. “The problem the department has always had in investigating Julian Assange is there is no way to prosecute him for publishing information without the same theory being applied to journalists,” said former Justice Department spokesman Matthew Miller told the Post. “And if you are not going to prosecute journalists for publishing classified information, which the department is not, then there is no way to prosecute Assange.” Justice officials told the Post that the same distinction between leaker and journalist or publisher is being made between Manning or Snowden and Assange. Unless they can find evidence Assange did something like hack into government computers, he's being treated the same as a publisher. Manning and Snowden have been charged with violations of the Espionage Act. But during Manning's 2011 trial, online chat logs found on Manning’s personal computer show she sought advice about cracking passwords from a chat user listed as “Nathaniel Frank,” whom prosecutors said they linked to an e-mail address used by Assange, our colleague Josh Gerstein reported. The user alleged to be Assange replied that he had access to “rainbow tables,” a type of data set that can be used to convert an encrypted password into plain text. However since then, no other evidence emerged publicly of Assange, or someone who prosecutors said was Assange, asking Manning for records or to crack passwords to get access to records. On Twitter, WikiLeaks said they are "skeptical" about the Post report. "A smoke screen or is the US DoJ finally realizing that it has no case against (Assange)?" WikiLeaks tweeted. http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2013/11/the-dojs-new-york-times-problem-with-assange-178396.html?hp=l8

  5. Travelling with Tomcal is great fun also. He is great company ! I am unable to follow his rythm, though. In France, we would call him "La Péniche" (a boat) since it goes 5 knots per hour (in French slang, "knot" is "cock")

  7. Like me, another "farofeiro" to whatever degree. A fa-roh-FAY-ro is someone who brings things (food, beverage, ice chest, chairs, umbrellas) to the beach with them, rather than paying the rental people. I've had three Brasilian boyfriends who considered me very declasse. The idea of a picnic basket does not fly here. It really depends on which barraca one chooses to settle. For about the past 3 years we have been going to Barraca de Miriam, a very mixed, older clientele with very few barbies, hardly ever the smell of grass. We tried Sonia or Vania closer to Posto 9 once last week, We went back the next day to Miriam. I feel much more safe and secure at Farme at Ipa than at Copa as the beach is not as wide and we are much closer to Ave. Vieira Souto.

  8. Basically they are only tearing down the Perimetral section by section as they open lanes of the Binario Tunnel and the Via Expresso which runs from the Praca Maua almost to the entrance to the Santos Dumont Airport. Túnel Binário has open sections at the Port Connection between Primeiro de Março Street and Praça Mauá is part of the three-year countdown to the Rio 2016 Games. Tunnel will be 1.480 meters long. This Monday, 5, Rio’s city hall inaugurated the first section of túnel Binário, between Primeiro de Março Street and Praça Mauá, downtown. The implosion was part of the three-year countdown to the opening ceremony of Rio 2016 Games. The tunnel will be 1.480 meters long and will connect Primeiro de Março Street to Antônio Lage Street, next to Moinho Fluminense. The intention is to have it ready by July, 2014. The open section is of 440 meters and will allow more flexibility in the works. To the mayor, although the section is not yet in operation, it is time to celebrate. - We are three years away from the Olympic Games and it represents a recovery of downtown Rio, said the mayor. This photo is taken directly a short block to the east of Meio Mundo. I am only surprise that combined with the fragile nature of the structure and the blasting, along with all of the vibrations TomCal and his groupings provide, that the whole place hasn't CUM tumbling down. The Binário do Porto Road is being built at the same time as Avenida Rodrigues Alves, and is 3.5km long. Each direction has three lanes and several exits towards Downtown. One of the directions connects Novo Rio Bus Station to Avenida Rio Branco. The other goes from Primeiro de Março Street to the entrance of the Gasômetro’s viaduct, which is under construction. Binário do Porto e Via Expressa (modernization of Avenida Rodrigues Alves with the implantation of another tunnel) will replace Elevado da Perimetral and are expected to increase by 27% the capacity of traffic flow in the Port Region. The mayor recalled that they will start bringing down Perimetral in the second semester of the year. To the director-president of Companhia de Desenvolvimento Urbano da Região do Porto do Rio de Janeiro, Alberto Gomes Silva, the opening of the tunnel will speed up the work even more. Symbolically, the opening of túnel Binário shows that we are on schedule. Besides, it will accelerate the construction and improve work conditions, declared the director-president of CDURP. Mayor Eduardo Paes also highlighted that the tunnel is very important to the city, but declared that the city hall’s priority is to provide the center of Rio with LRTs. But the area won’t be revitalized only due to traffic e commercial buildings. The mayor reported that a bill of tax incentives for residential projects in the area of Porto Novo should be sent to the city council - A city without a center is a city without a soul. From the total of new buildings in the port region, I want 40% to 45% to be residential. I want people living here, stated Paes. Share on Facebook Recommend on Google+ Tweet Send through e-mail

  9. Inflation has hit Ipa and Farme. I went there three days in a row last week and then with the holiday last Wednesday, had a full group of friends for lunch and pool time. Anyway, I was at two different barracas/tents that service the beachgoers with chairs, sun umbrellas, beverages and a menu of sandwiches and appetizers, besides what the passing vendors are offering. Guarda-Sol/Umbrella: 8-10Reais Cadeira/Beach Chair: 5-6Reais Water 4Reais Soft Drinks 5-6Reais Agua de Coco 8-10Reais Caipirinha - varied flavors 15Reais We normally stop at Zona Sul Market on the way to the beach in pick up cheese and salami sandwiches, some cashews, chips, etc and then hit the beach. So I cannot remember what each vendor charges. But the Baihana who has her two studly helpers who schlepp her styrofoam cases of empanadas and sanduiches, charges 5 Reais for a salgado. Sandwich not a clue. The enormous "sahnd-oo-ee-she-ah nah-too-rahl" woman in her dental floss bikini charge 10Reais for one of hers. The muscular acai guy who sometimes is at the saunas charges 8Reais and up depending on the size of the portion you choose. Suntan lotion is quite expensive. Much higher on the beach than at the pharmacy. And the pharmacy is much more expensive than the cost in the USA. One trick we do is to put our backpacks around the stakes that go into the sand and then have them but the umbrella into the stake. It makes it much harder to do a quick snatch and grab. They clothes we wear that don't go in the backpack we put on top of the stringers that support the umbrella. When the three of us went to Ipanema on that Sunday, I think our bill came to 111Reais. And that does not include the porcaria(think porcao or piggy)/crap we bought from the vendors. The next two days, we were at around 55-70Reais. But then we might be there for more hours than you are. Usually from Noon until 4:30PM or 5:00PM.

    Sauna Fragata - Sao Paulo

After several decades of “entertaining” countless clients and garotos, Sauna Fragata is scheduled to close its doors, forever. Those who have visited Fragata over the years, might have noticed that the sauna is located in a mixed business/residential area. The area is predominantly composed of numerous apartments and condominiums. The owners of the building that houses Fragata received a monetary offer from builders who desire to demolish Fragata's location as well as the immediate adjoining buildings in order to construct a large apartment/condominium complex. The sale and closure of Fragata is contingent on the builder obtaining necessary building permits and approval to construct the desired project. As of last Friday, it appeared that the sale will be accomplished within next few months. In the meantime, Fragata remains open but no longer has the large crowds and fun times of by gone days. Upon learning of the upcoming slated closure, my questions were why don't the Fragata owners simply move Fragata to a new location or sell the business to a third party. I did not receive an answer for these questions. It was reported that the expected gain on the sale of the building is so large, the owners merely want to “cash out” and no longer operate a sauna. Sao Paulo has had some wonderful saunas disappear over the past ten years. Alterosas, Bon Vivant, Boys Club, Paradise are some of the saunas that closed during my recollection. Those saunas had owners who truly tried to make a go of operating each sauna. Each owner treated clients and garotos courteously and tried to make a business of the sauna, yet the saunas failed. Ironically, the only surviving rent-boi sauna in this huge city of more than fifteen million people will be Sauna Lagoa, if the sale of Fragata goes through. What a shame, the two most inconsiderate and undeserving owners (Edgarde and Rodolfo) will operate the only successful rent-boi sauna in Sao Paulo. Unquestionably, for the many who visited Fragata over the years, Fragata will be missed with fondness.
