  1. My first trip to Thailand, two generations ago, I was quickly sent to the toilet by something I ate.  The next visit, a generation later, I survived until the last day when I took a river cruise and had some food from the food table.  In the past two years, things have been better.  The link is to an article from the NY Times that I've found helpful in traveling and dealing with local food.  It's by Jane Brody

  2. Just a quick note, I've been to Bangkok and Thailand a number of time, going back too many years to think about, so I won't.   I'll be returning in May for a week's visit.  Decided it was time to see more than just a neighborhood or two, so after reading this thread on the board, I contacted siamroads.com.  First email went awry, second got me a quick response from Ya.  He set up a chat on Messenger and quickly he and I were on the same wavelength.  Totally, reorganized my planning for the better.  Ya will not be in Thailand during my visit, but arranged for Guss to be my guide.

I'm posting this because the level of service, attention to detail,  and Ya's ability to sense what I was interested in from the chat text and make suggestions was superb.

I'll update this after my visit.

  3. In casting about for some hotel information (that's another post), one of the hotel managers included the following comment in his emailed reply

There are two major holidays clashing with your planned visit to Bangkok.

Japan is celebrating a "Golden Week" after the May holiday (until 08 May 2016) and China is celebrating May Day holiday as well. We are expecting high occupancy until at least the 8th May as we have joined some overseas promotions for those holidays.

I'll make a wild guess, that prices and crowds will be up...

  4. I'll be visiting Bangkok from May 5th for 6 days.  In the past I've stayed at Tarntawan and been content.  A friend recommended that I think about Swisslodge.  I looked at the website and it's a good one.  The pricing for a week's stay is less than Tarntawan.  Any comments, is there a fee for "guests"? - that could even out the pricing question immediately.
