I don't imagine this forum gets much traffic...but, here goes. I am in the very beginning stages of planning a trip to Sri Lanka. Anyone been? recommendations for guides or travel companies. Utopia has a few listed that look like they might be worth contacting.

Never said that I didn't think there was a class of wealthy Thais buying these things. Not sure there are really THAT many who are buying R-Rs or Aston's at the mall though. Although I just did a bit of research and see that a Honda City, for example, only costs around US$16K which is comparable or less than in the USA. Of course the median income here is a lot lower even with that middle class. A 3-series BMW is $75K which is a bit less than 2x in the USA. A MINI Cooper is US$60K! My point was that these luxury cars and European imports are wildly expensive.

The thing I love about Paragon is how ridiculous it is. A Rolls-Royce dealer, Aston Martin dealer, etc right in the mall! I don't know how any Thai can afford a car given the prices and I presume taxes. Unless they only apply to imports or luxury cars...but a BMW is at least 2x or 3x more than it would be in the USA, for example. And while there is a lot of eye candy everywhere you go, this latest trend all across SE Asia for young men to sport these pubescent boy "mustaches" really need to end. I just don't understand the appeal, because it certainly doesn't appeal to me.

"sexy show" could mean just about anything. I wouldn't get my hopes up too high. I arrived in Pattaya last night but was too exhausted to go out. So if I really did miss something special I will be disappointed. :-)

so, a couple of corrections. The guy I had as my masseur on Saturday was Ton, not Son. And apparently the boy I saw was not Ko, but this cute guy named Nung (or maybe Neung). Apparently he's only been there for a few days but I am pretty sure he is the guy I saw in the locker area. His massage technique is surprisingly good, but again very powerful. I don't know why the Thais love extremes so much....the spiciest food possible and massage so hard it hurts. He's very sweet, I had a nice time with him...only minus is that he smokes cigarettes. Doesn't really speak English, but not a big deal to me.

I went there today for the first time. Hope the new place is cleaner. They will move into the new location on 12 December. He says it will be boy massge, regular Thai massage and foot massage. So if you just want a massage and not the other stuff they will have you covered. I assume it will be different masseurs doing the different types. My masseur was OK. Cute little guy called Son. His massage technique was a bit unusual and his hands were surprisingly powerful...too powerful in some cases. Did 90 mins for 800 plus tip (1000 minimum). 60 minutes is 650 so it seemed like worth doing the extra time. As I was getting undressed in the locker area another boy was just finishing up with his client and he was stunning. I was kicking myself for not going earlier. According to the guy running the place his name is Ko and he's from CM. I will return Monday hoping to see him. Young, taller, fit, handsome face....

The thing holding tourism back at the moment is lack of hotels and travel infrastructure. Thus you have high hotel prices as Bob mentioned for not so great accommodations. It will take time to build that out. But I agree there is plenty of money just waiting for the right time to flood in. Now that NLD swept the elections, the real work will start. Expectations will be very high for instant positive changes. It will be interesting to see if they can pull it off.

I was there in 2011, right before Hillary Clinton's visit. The transportation infrastructure really needs a lot of investment. Now that foreign investment is flooding in my guess is that will happen before too long. Flying domestically is like a trip back to the 70s. But things are changing fairly quickly from what I've read. Great people (for the most part) and some very interesting sights. Bagan is stupendous. And Shwedagon is magical. I spent several days in the northwest at Mrauk U and Sittwe. I think all of the problems there are a real shame. The religious/ethnic violence erupted about 6 months after I was there.

it's really not so unusual. Lots of Thais have no filter. Or tact. They just say what's on their mind, no offense intended. I suspect the farang knew he was "not so beautiful"

I am headed to the area next week. I'm returning to Luang Prabang (first visit was 7 or 8 years ago), then flying down to the south and taking a cruise down the Mekong, a couple of days around Bolaven Plateau, fly to Siem Reap (another return visit) for several days including a visit to Koh Ker, Beng Mealea and Preah Vihear (overnighting there), driving down from SR to Phhom Penh with stops along the way at various sights before flying back to Thailand....Christmas in Pattaya for a few days, then Bangkok for a few days. My guess is that things will be quiet in Laos, but I will have a little more time free in SR so we'll see how that goes. Seems to be several guys there active on Gay Romeo.

The main reason to visit Cambodia is to see the stupendous ancient and natural sights. The guys are very handsome like everywhere else...some South Asian mixed in which I like. On my previous visits I don't recall any hanky panky but it's been a few years since my last visit and the hook up apps weren't around then. I did visit the gay bars in Phnom Penh. Definitely some hustler/mb's there. Blue Chili was a bit more laid back than the other one I went to. But that was a while ago. utopia-asia.com has fairly up to date listings for venues and so forth. I'm not sure anywhere has it "like Thailand". I'm headed there in a couple of weeks. There are a couple of saunas and massage places. And in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap a few gay bars. But no gogos. Certainly there is nothing on the scale of Bangkok and Pattaya. I'm guessing the hook up apps could be popular. I'll know for sure soon enough. I think the reason to go to Cambodia is different. If you are just looking for sex tourism then Thailand is a better option. If you look in the "world" or other country forums on this site and the other gay Thailand sites you will find some Cambodia info.

I understand that it can be difficult. The mamasans can be excellent students of psychology. They know that most people don't like confrontation so they push as far as they can get away with. Don't feel bad about saying no to anyone who is trying to extract money out of you uninvited. And certainly don't allow yourself to be groped by some one you don't want groping you. I think that's probably all part of their testing of your boundaries. It's easy to feel bad about having to be firm because no one likes to disappoint others, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I've only ever felt good about buying drinks for a mamasan at one bar that sadly no longer exists, mainly because I enjoyed the vibe of the place and the people who worked there. The good ones know how to treat you nicely and with at least the illusion of respect. Others are just pushy and annoying and gross. But my guess is that they've discovered it's easier for them to make a quick buck out of you than it is to cultivate loyal business. Of course in the end what really matters is the boys.

Bali has lots of interesting sights, but traffic is heavy so it takes a while to get around. Seminyak is pretty crowded. Ubud was a bit more laid back. I enjoyed Yogyakarta as well...it's the education center of Indonesia so lots of cute university boys around. I was a bit disappointed by the boys in Bali. The bars in Seminyak are VERY LOUD. I didn't stay long the night I ventured out to them. There's a massage shop upstairs from the bars and I was propositioned frequently walking down the street by some queeny guys working there every time I went past. Anyone who is a size queen is likely to be very disappointed. I had a massage at one of the massage places and the guy I got had the tiniest little penis I have ever seen. The moneyboy I met on Jack'd (I think) was somewhat tiresome. At first I wasn't sure he was a moneyboy until we got back to my hotel and then he suddenly became "shy" and started asking how much I was going to give him. Met another guy on one of the apps who was very pushy before I blocked him. It all just seemed like too much work compared to Thailand. Plenty of handsome guys around though. And some really amazing scenery.

I've used thelimopattaya many times to get back and forth between there and Bangkok. Only ever had one problem and that was when the driver didn't show to pick me up at my hotel in Bangkok because he had an accident on the way. Called them a couple of times with help from the front desk and eventually they sent a local car to pick me up and that driver didn't know Pattaya well so I had to direct him to the hotel. But every other time has been very good. Comfortable car, decent drivers. One guy spoke English very well so we managed to have an actual conversation which was kind of nice.

Good for you FireCat. Even if it's only for a short time, you are really improving one boy's life. I almost wish I was planning to spend more time in Thailand on my next trip, but Laos and Cambodia will still be interesting I'm sure. :-) I need to win the lottery so I can retire.

You will have a great time. For sure there will be plenty of touts trying to attract your attention as you walk through the area. A simple no thanks and keep walking usually does the trick unless you want to say yes. :-) If you're staying all the way down by the river that's not really all that close to the gay areas with respect to being walkable. So you'll need to taxi or if you are near enough to BTS you can take the train. 4 days isn't a ton of time to get the lay of the land but you should be able to make a good start. Have fun!

Glad you are supporting the Thai economy. I wish I was there right now too. These next two months are really going to drag. You weren't kidding about all of the cute new boys on GR. I was checking it out the other day and couldn't stop drooling. So many cute boys. Your last couple of guests are absolutely gorgeous IMHO. You're right that getting there from the East coast isn't "fun" exactly as it basically takes almost a whole day. But I usually take Cathay F class via JFK which is about as fun as you can get...other than maybe SQ suites. HKG isn't my most favorite transit point but I think it is about the same as NRT. I agree that EVA is quite nice in business class. And a million times better than UA which I avoid at all costs. ANA it depends on how the aircraft is configured. I flew there "square suite" back to DC last year and it was pretty good. That airplane has the 1-2-1 staggered business class which is another league compared to their 2-3-2 angled flat seats.

Nice report. Thanks for sharing. My impression of CM last time I was there is very much in line with yours. I think I wrote a long report about it here too. AA was no fun for me either. I think maybe you were too early for Saranrom. At least from Christian's many reports it seems like things don't start going there until 9 or 10PM.
