Etienne also told us about a place to convert money in the colonial zone, but because of our late flight the establishment would be closed when we arrived.

The name of the money exchange establishment is CASA DE CAMBIO FRANK EL AZUANO.  Its in the colonial zone, two stores down from THE PALACIO HOTEL, next to a cigar shop. It was our first time exchanging money in santo domingo. I felt so accomplished after the transaction. We usually covert money through our bank, but realized we were losing money during the exchange with the fees that our bank charges.

We stayed indoors a lot this trip for 2 reasons. Reason number one is it was too damn hot to be outside for too long. Omg! The heat was unbearable. Reason number 2 is that we had a sexual encounter schedule almost every 3 to 4 hours.

Before this trip I did a little research to find different restaurants for my husband and I to try. There is a very nice restaurant in the middle of the colonial zone called DUO. The American Breakfast at DUO is delicious. We sat inside because the place has air conditioning. If you don’t mind the heat, you can sit outside and people watch.

Another nice restaurant we visited while there was JULIETA BRASSERIE.  Its about a 30 minute UBER drive from the colonial zone. we decided to hire an uber-xl driver because we like leg room. The cost each way was $9. That’s amazing that the fare was so cheap. The restaurant is in an upscale area of town. It was so nice driving from our apartment in the colonial zone to the JULIETTE restaurant.

During the drive we saw so much of santo domingo that we never get a chance to see because we stay in the colonial zone and have only ventured out of that area to visit boca chica beach and the sex house in the country. on our ride to the restaurant we saw so many beautiful, hard working people in the streets going about their daily routine. I smiled for most of the drive because in all our trips to this beautiful place, we’ve never seen the areas we had to pass through to get to the restaurant. My husband even turned to me and says, “I could live over here after I retire.”

After the 30 minute drive we arrive at the restaurant and sat with the beautiful Dominican locals who were all speaking spanish and enjoying their food. After eating at this fine restaurant, we walked around the area for about an hour. They have a VERY NICE mall a few blocks away from the restaurant. I believe it’s called BLUE MALL or BLUE MOON MALL. On the drive back to our apartment we passed by the PRESIDENT’S PALACE which would be the equivalent of the WHITE HOUSE in the UNITED STATES. If you ever visit Santo domingo take an uber ride to the restaurant and just enjoy the different sights and people making their way around this beautiful country.

Two comments:

The DC attorney (Van) owned an apartment  right outside of the Colonial Zone in Gazcue where he stayed alone and had guests when he regularly visited. He was not murdered from an overnight stay. The Dominican was a regular that he saw who came to visit him in broad daylight, and the Dominican (presumably unexpectedly) brought along another guy with him who he said was his cousin. The DC attorney opened the locked gated door for both of them. He was then tied up, robbed, tortured and murdered by strangulation with some items the two had bought at a store earlier (so the murder/robbery was pre-planned). Before Van died, the two got him to open his safe. With that money (approximately $1500 USD, some electronics, cell phones and clothes, the two went and bought a motor bike.

Van was in his mid 50s. The Dominicans were 20 and 19.

I only state all of this to emphasize that the DC attorney’s murder had nothing to do with an overnight stay. But yes, be wary and be cautious in all situations, and always watch your back. The DR can be a beautiful place with gorgeous, friendly people, but there is also an underbelly of it that is grotesque and unforgiving.

I've booked my United flights and arrive in SD on 5 July, two days before their LGBT Pride March and related activities, and staying eleven nights. My understanding is those deaths were not in Boca Chica, but at all-inclusive resorts in La Romana, Punta Cana and Sosúa. Most likely, these deaths are related to bootleg alcohol being used by alcohol distributors to the resorts,  which is probably not something you’d have to worry about if you avoid resorts and hotels and mingle in Santo Domingo. But we will see.

Palacio is in the heart of the colonial zone. As long as your visitors have identification,  you wont have a problem. They dont charge extra for guests.

Totally correct the so called Gay Hotel " the Adam suites" is a dive. The Palacio is a restored colonial gem. Before AirBnB this was my place of choice and there is NO problem with guests. The hotel checks their ID (Cedula) assuring that they are over 18 and have one. The only possible extra charge is if they stay over night and you have breakfast included you will have to pay for your guest as paper chits are given for the days covered on check in and you will have none for him. But this is a great place.

You will see it listed as Boutique Hotel Palacio on Calle Duarte

However, being gay operated says little about tolerance for the parade of sex work guests for which some of us want an unencumbered privilege.

Hi, I hope you don't mind a controversial question regarding taking a photo of a hustler's identification. 

I realize you take the photo for your protection. 

However, in order to take the photo, you must ask the guy for his identification, tell him you want to photo it, and then place the identification in a position it can be photographed. 

Then, you must take your camera phone to copy the identification. 

However, if the guy is dishonest and is up to no good, what is to prevent the guy from grabbing your phone, leaving and taking his identification with him, thus leaving you without a phone?

It seems asking a guy if you can photograph his identification is setting up an adversarial situation that could end up unpleasant.

I forgot to mention that an Airbnb host typically provides linen for one person, unless you formally stipulated additional legit guests on the  reservation. Often, for a week or so, you get the bare minimum and there is no easy system for replenishment.

With apologies, not to overlook Discovery Hotel or Casa Conde Hotel Boutique, also in the area and mentioned by other posters previously, that would serve the same purpose and perhaps even more economically.

That would work well for guys you meet through a mediator like Manny, who will be there when you meet them. I’m not so sure that strategy is foolproof for guys you meet on the Conde, in a shady place like Cine Lido, on an app, or on any streets in Zona Colonial. Especially if you are doing it alone and don’t have much of an imposing physical presence. 

The hotels that allow visitors usually do that as a requirement.
