Please stop trying to analyze my posts. Nowhere did I say that my Chiang Mai experience was based on a 3-day jaunt. How presumptive of you to make such an arrogant statement.
On my most recent trip to Chiang Mai, I rented a car from the airport for two weeks, and I drove with my Lao friend to revisit places I first visited more than 30 years ago, along with some new locations. We drove to Chiang Rai, Doi Mae Salong, Chiang Saen, Doi Tung, Mae Kompong, etc.
And I'm pleased to hear that your experience of Chiang Mai goes back at least a decade. My first visit to Thailand was in 1981. I have been to Chiang Mai numerous times, for extended stays over the decades. I have spent a considerable amount of time in northern Thailand, so I believe I have a fair amount of firsthand knowledge of the area.
I spent New Year's Eve of the new millennium 26 years ago in Adam's Apple Club, as I was staying with a Shan boy who worked there in 1999. At midnight, when the clock ticked into the year 2000, Mohammed, the owner flickered the light switches, and comically announced on the speaker system "Y2K, Y2K".
I do not intend to comment further about this. Especially, I do not wish to derail this excellent thread that @aaroninatl started about his experiences in the north. I was merely giving him a few suggestions for places to visit while in Chiang Mai. I think I am not alone in saying it would be appreciated if you would tone down your pompous remarks.

I think you may have misunderstood my post. I'm not saying that the location of the original bar had changed but the original owner and his business had moved nearby. I was last there in October 2024 just after the big floods. I think somebody else may have taken over the old premises after Covid (I believe the bar has changed hands several times - there was a Scot involved at one point and a Thai who was quite ill) and retained the old name of the bar and they had to close again during the devastating floods of October 2024
The post flood clean up took up to a month in some areas and the bar wasn't yet open when I was there. The original owner (Deet?) had moved and started a new bar in a small alley about 20 metres to the left of the bar in your pictures. As one faces the bar in your googled pictures and looks to the left, there's the pay toilet that you used, then the wide staircase leading to the first floor and then the new bar owned by the former owner of Chiang Mai 19 in a small alley on the extreme left on the ground floor, also in the same building.
A very long time ago there was a pizza shop in that CM 19 spot run by a former manager of Adam's Apple. He had been a tuk-tuk driver for a while after leaving Adam's before opening the pizza shop. He then moved and opened a proper pizza and Thai restaurant on Loi Kroh Road nearby which I frequented a few times. The restaurant's closed sadly. Try googling it.
Thailand may have re-opened its doors for tourism following Covid in October 2022 but only the businesses that had the resources to do so did and often not immediately. Some had closed permanently as did many SMEs in Chiang Mai following the big flood in October 2024.

Agreed. But if I just want one or two items quickly, I wouldn't make a long trip to just one location when a 7-11 or Tops express is just around the corner.

I personally like this approach better. My first off from any bar was an awful one. Guy was not to my taste at all but I felt obliged because he was right in my face as soon as I walked into the bar, grinning, winking, waving from the stage. I was a self conscious newbie, got pushed around by mamasan and boy both.
Now I like the boy to stare straight ahead - not at me - until I decide to engage.

I go to 7-Eleven in the US maybe twice a year. Here it’s at least twice a day. What’s your gotta grab?
Mine:
#1 - the cooling towels they keep inside the chilled drinks cooler. I don’t know what chemical they put in those towels but holy crap it works miracles
#2 - the blueberry cookies. For those with commitment issues like me, if you don’t want to buy a full bag, look for these individual size ones.
#3 - toasties. I didn’t think I would become addicted to these but here I am. The croissant ham and cheese is my favorite.
#4 - coffee milk - sold in little plastic bottles for about 10 or 15 baht.
#5 - deet spray - most people buy the one in pink I like the one in orange. I think it actually does help. Keep flies away, but more importantly, you stink less. 😆
#6 - the G’Nite gummies. Honestly, I don’t know if these actually do anything. But they taste great. If I wake up too early at four or 5 AM, I pop one of these

My only pet peeve about 7 Eleven is the minimum credit card amount. I think it's 300 baht. I can never get to 200.

Wow, so much processed food loaded with carbs and sugar. There's often a fruit cart parked in front of 7-11s in Thailand and you should check it out sometime. Guava has a low GI and Thai ones are fresh and crunchy but go easy on the plum powder as it's loaded with sugar. They're called ฝรั่ง or farang, spelled and pronounced exactly the same way as the commonly used descriptor for westerners. Make sure you get the fresh ones and not the ones that have been soaked in syrup.
Unripe mango, pomelo, white dragon fruit, tangerines and Thai jujube (they look like green apples) are also good options for diabetics but, as always, everything in moderation. Next to the cool season, June to August is my favourite time of the year in Thailand being the main fruit season. Longans, lychees, longkong, rambutans (Surat Thani is famous for its rambutans), mangosteens...again, in moderation. I was in Hatyai last weekend and there was still a wide variety of local fruit so you're not too late. Durian is available all year round now; I may be biased but I prefer Malaysian durian to Thai durian. 😅 Be careful of dried fruit: high in fibre but high GI too.

It is not reverting to the old layout for me. My main gripes with this format are that the main page shows only the single most recently updated post (or 2 posts max) within a 3 hour time span and I have to click through other sub forums to see updated threads. On the old layout it automatically showed when each sub forum had a new post or reply.
Also that it is much harder to find and click through to the last post in the multi-page threads. Seems to default to the very first page/post

Gayguides has moved from a site that was fast to load, easy to use and easy to navigate to a site that is desperately slow with a home page that involves endless scrolling and the loss of the functionality to mark forums as “read” directly from the home page. I use iPhone and iPad to access the site and have found the new platform to be wholly inferior to the previous version. It is simply less good than it was previously which is why I describe it as a downgrade.

It is interesting to note that the activity and number of posts on Sawatdnee Network seems to have risen substantially since the Gayguides downgrade came on line.
