A number of years back a very large passenger sat in the middle seat after I was seated in the aisle seat. Before he sat down, he announced loudly to the window seat passenger and myself that both armrests would be up for the flight, and proceeded to raise them. I doubt if it is of much interest to anyone, but after posting on this Board and its predecessor gaythailand.com for 20 years, it is time to call it a day. For my first 13 years I wrote so much about the gay venues in Bangkok – and several other Thai cities – as like many on this Board sex was a major interest. But far from my only one, as those who have criticised my longer posts know only too well. I have posted a large number of photo essays of the trips I have made, both within Thailand – as for example the amazing Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival, the equally fascinating Dansai Ghost Festival and the gorgeous beach at Khao Lak as well as the trips one can make from there. Photo essays have included a host of countries near Thailand like Nepal, Bhutan, several from Japan, and further afield like the Iguazu Falls, Patagonia, the Arctic Circle, Talinn, Petra, Iran, New Zealand, several on Taiwan and quite a few more.
Having been partnered for six years now and with no desire to visit my old gay haunts in Thailand like my partner, I restrict myself to occasional gay posts about Taipei and perhaps a couple of other cities outside Thailand. I no longer fit in with the interests of most Thailand posters. My curiosity about Japan where I lived for some years and other Asian countries is now almost totally restricted to my own interest in history, culture and society which really demand longer posts which some posters just do not like. Fair enough! This is not a blog site.
Let me add this is not a sudden decision. After thinking about it for several months, about ten weeks ago I wrote to inform @TotallyOz whom I met a couple of times in our go-go bar visiting days. But getting older, especially on holiday in Pattaya, certainly has its developing challenges.

We were in Pattaya for four days recently; my partner had some work at Bangkok Hospital and he asked me to tag along. You may remember, I volunteered to the Supertown bowling organizers to be the designated farang sponsor of the Sunee Bar so that they could participate in the Jomtien Pride Bowling competition.
Previously to the actual competition date I met with the team several times over at the bowling alley for our team practice sessions and also over at their bar.  What I learned about the inner workings of the Sunee Bar were very illuminating and probably apply to many of the other entities in the Jomtien Complex aka Supertown:
There are 4 types of "staff" at the Sunee Bar: The owner(s) - in this case I believe that it is now 1 person, as there was recently a big divestiture of the many bars that Charlie Entertainment  previously owned in Supertown, of which Sunee Bar was one of them.  Some of the larger bars in Supertown have multiple owners. Dance troupe - these are the dancers and I believe that they are on the payroll with supplements to their earnings that are made when the tip box is passed around to the customers at the end of their 1 hour show segments. Wait staff / host boys - I believe that these guys are also on the payroll with supplements to their earnings that are earned either by buying them drinks when you request that they sit with you and then the tips that are collected when the check-bin is asked for. Freelance - these are the guys who do not have a contract with the bar and are not on the payroll and their complete income is sourced from when the customer buys them a drink, tips, and if they are amenable to being offed by the customer. Now, having said all of that, there are exceptions to what I wrote above:
Rarely, some of the dance troupe can be offed - but it is often at a very high price and often these guys will decline the offer as they are not interested and/or they are in a relationship with one of their contemporaries.  Rumor says that the star of the dance troupe commands 5k for an off and rarely says yes. Wait staff / host boys - my bowling team was made up from this segment of the staff.  Some of them were quite popular and had their farang regulars and I had to make them commit to the team to not accept an off on the day of the Jomtien Pride Bowling competition, or on either of the 2 afternoons that were designated for our practice sessions.  I told them that if their farang would insist to off them that they were to bring the farang to the bowling practice and/or competition - which never had to be put to the test. I intentionally refrained from recruiting from the freelancers to participate in the Sunee Bar bowling team because their earnings are too entangled with getting an off that I felt it would be too risky for them to make a proper commitment to the responsibilities required to be a bowling team member.

I've done the SQ flight from New York to Singapore a number of times in Business each way....18-19 1/2 hours ....I prefer that than the typical 12-14 hr flights via Tokyo from the US.... I feel more rested on the longer flights.

Sadly, many of the Thai guys I've known over the past 22 years in the Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Pattaya gay scenes have passed away and the above clip brought a tear to my eye. These guys grew up poor and without proper nutrition which in turn affected their physical and mental development and their bodies' ability to cope with the diseases and the heavy party lifestyle which they eventually encountered. One was given rice water as a baby as his family couldn't afford formula. They didn't go to the doctor when they were sick either due to lack of resources, fear or ignorance, and by the time a medical condition was discovered, it was often too late. It breaks my heart as quite a few of them were of my generation. 😔
