Adventures of a Koh Samui Rookie September 2026
Aaaaaaah ok. I'm not like most in the LGBTQ+ community so that's probably why I didn't know it. lol My friends have dubbed me the homophobic homo. The AI makes sense. I could see this being a couples getaway spot. Lots of boutique hotels. Unfortunately the guys on Grindr tapping me here are more along the lines of what I'd get back in the US. The 'Kok spoiled me. Did a little reading and apparently this was the hub before Samui built up that Chataweng area. I don't necessarily need to be near the gays though. When I booked this trip months ago it was to see if I liked living in various parts of Thailand. This was a contender back then mostly because of that YouTube guy I mentioned loving it so much. He might've even been the reason I picked Lamai Beach. Don't remember... this was back in March when I booked all this. But yeah, guys were never the focal point of this trip... it just became that way in Bangkok lol. Bangkok was originally just my landing point when I got to Thailand. I booked 2 weeks just because I'd never been and knew there was fun to be had. But it wasn't originally a place I ever considered living seriously. Then I got to Bangkok and that changed real quick.

Adventures of a Koh Samui Rookie September 2026
OK Jedi you're dealing with a rookie here. What's a PLU? lol I chose an area where the biggest concentration of Airbnbs were... usually a good way to decide. Plus the reviews for this place were among the best. It's Lamai Beach where I am. Just did a more extensive walk around the area... it's definitely a tourist spot, but still kind of local/indy vibes to it... no Hiltons or anything like that. What are the things in Chaweng that are must-see? The beach here is very nice. I'm just missing the adrenaline of Bangkok. I've just gotta realize nothing's going to match that. Once I de-'Kok my brain and appreciate the chill beach island life, I'll be good. But Koh Samui after Bangkok is like having a glass of milk after downing 10 Red Bulls.

Adventures of a Koh Samui Rookie September 2026
I have arrived on the island. After 2 weeks in Bangkok, this is quite the change of pace. To be 100% honest, I'm not quite feeling Koh Samui yet. The first weird vibe was when I got to my gate at the airport. It felt like I was tricked and being flown back to the US. Everyone was pasty white. Not an Asian in sight. I don't wanna sound racist, but I don't wanna see the albinos. My buddy thinks it's The White Lotus effect. I'll admit I sat through every episode of that show and loved it... but I don't think it influenced my decision to come to Thailand. After arriving, it felt like Koh Samui is Thailand's answer to Santa Marta or Cartagena in Colombia. Poor neighborhoods until you get where the whiteys are... then it's beautiful. I hate that contrast. That said, I'm not staying in the most touristy of areas. I'm at an Airbnb 20 steps from the beach in what feels like a hybrid local neighborhood but the neighborhood is all ex Pats. The guys hitting on me on Grindr are decidedly less enticing than they were in Bangkok. Too bad because now I don't have gogo bars or massage parlors to relieve me of my tensions. There are massage parlors all over... but not of my persuasion. And the one gay bar seems to be a $15 Grab each way... and it doesn't look to be all that wild. Can anyone vouch for Pride Bar being worth $30 in Grab fare? As you can probably tell, I'm a little uncertain about this part of my Thailand trip. I booked it because the guy who did a YouTube channel I watched a lot this past year about Americans and Canadians moving to Thailand left Bangkok for this place. But I'm definitely have 'Kok withdrawal symptoms. We'll see if they subside.

I always prefer Airbnb, with one exception: Las Vegas. In Vegas, the hotel is 1/2 the experience. But especially in foreign countries, staying at a Hilton just seems so lame. To each his own. But this Airbnb was like $35-40 a night I think... right in the heart of Silom, quiet, comfortable. And it was no problem entertaining. And boy did I. 😜 The reviews system on Airbnb gives good peace of mind. I can count on one hand the number of bad Airbnb experiences I've had... and I've probably used 100 Airbnbs since it became a thing from Europe to US cities to South America.

My situation is different since both guys I connected with knew I'm a temp. But yeah neither of them were looking for sugar. #1 as I call him the Japanese teacher... he insisted on paying equally. If I tried to pay for 2 meals in a row, he wasn't having it. Now again, these were both finite little mini-relationships so no long term plans were ever in the works. But both guys were super attracted... I guess I still got a little left in the tank. In the US I'm invisible. But in Bangkok, I was blown away by the attention I was getting from guys of the caliber I was seeing. Both of the two I spent time with had good jobs and most importantly, amazing abs.

Adventures of a Bangkok Rookie August 2026
Well, gentlemen, that’ll put a wrap on this part of the trip. I’m at BKK getting ready to head to the island. Thanks for all the insight both before and once I got here. I definitely had a lot more fun because of all you guys. Was great to meet a couple of you. Hope to shake hands and have a beer with the rest of you at some point. One of my biggest regrets? Not spending more time on the rooftop of my Airbnb. I finally went up last night. It’s beautiful. Last night I booked the same place for my last couple weeks here. I’ll be posting my Koh Samui adventures over in that board. Then I’ll start a “Adventures of a Bangkok Sophomore” post when I return in October 😉

I plan to stay home. When I live here. 😉

Yes he does. Jason nailed it... I being the true Gemini I am do want both. I really need to fine a cloning specialist. 😆 Maybe they're cheaper in Thailand like other medical procedures. I do enjoy #1's company too. That one's a little easier to schedule some extra fun because he has a M-F 9 to 5 job teaching. That leaves daytime wide open plus he can't be out very late. But #1 is very fun behind closed doors. And he's fun to spend time with just doing date night stuff too. Having this "problem" wasn't too tragic. It did wonders for my suffering self-esteem to have 2 really quality guys have interest in this aging former hottie. 😜 But hey I managed to complete the top 10 list and had 2 great massages too. And I certainly saved a lot of money. So that's good right? lol

He'll be priority 1 when I get back. And going by that photo, he'll be 3 weeks even hotter!

Adventures of a Bangkok Rookie August 2026
I did pitch him an offer. Don't know if I wrote about it. He wasn't down. If we ever get to know each other in real life, ask me and I'll tell you the story. :)

LOL did consider that. Also contemplated a massage over at Titan. But eh, I am back for 2 weeks at the end of the month. If I was headed back to the US, the situation would be more desperate. 😆

Adventures of a Bangkok Rookie August 2026
You're missing the point lol. #2 is still on Soi 4. I looked to see if I could find a different entrance. If there is one, I didn't see it. I'm back in a few weeks. Sounds like these guys stick around a while.

Adventures of a Bangkok Rookie August 2026
Wow that's him? He looks so much better now!

Adventures of a Bangkok Rookie August 2026
I blew it lol. Met with #2 for drinks and there was no smooth way to exit because Jupiter's entrance was right down from where we were drinking... on the opposite direction of my Airbnb. 😆 Ah well. I'll be back in a few weeks.

Adventures of a Bangkok Rookie August 2026
I think it would be best if I just describe him he’s Asian kind of a slender build with dark hair and dark eyes.

Adventures of a Bangkok Rookie August 2026
LOL "hey is the hot one working tonight?" (I never got his name.) Meeting up with Grindr #2 for a bit... but will do my best to get some time on planet Jupiter.

Adventures of a Bangkok Rookie August 2026
Glad to. You guys gave me tons of info to prepare me for this trip. I owed ya. I'll be back for Round 2 in Bangkok at the end of this month. I'll start a "Adventures of a Rookie in Koh Samui" thread over on that board for anyone interested. Today was a low key day. Grindr #2 (Cambodian) and I met for lunch at an American place "Arno's". I think my palate has gone Asian because the burger and fries were way too greasy for me to enjoy. I NEVER leave fries behind. I think I ate about half of my order. The most enjoyable part was the salad. I asked my friends back home "Who am I? What have I become?" After we went to see the Spiderman movie at Paragon. I haven't been to a movie theater in forever... so it's probably not a new technology but the projections on the side walls is a cool new touch. As for tonight, gotta pack and then we'll see where things go from there. I really just want to go back to see that smoke show guy at Jupiter. But I have plans for one more night with #2. #1 mentioned he had plans tonight but he just messaged me while #2 and I were at the movie. LOL I'm so not used to have this to deal with. You have no idea... haha takes me back to my 20s.

Adventures of a Bangkok Rookie August 2026
No I went solo. I bought the ticket last week before I met #2. He wouldn't have been interested anyway. #1 went with me to the TV studio Muay Thai show but I don't think he enjoyed it all that much. And he had to work anyway. Ticket was $75. But the cheap seats were like $40ish so for $35 more, it was worth it.

Adventures of a Bangkok Rookie August 2026
Haha no, I was quite frugal last night. Just the admission/one drink on my tab. No they explicitly made announcements and put messages on the side TV screens that you are allowed to take photos and record video during the group walk. The first time it was announced I figured they messed up the translation since it was in English. When they said it a second time, I was surprised... and then when I read it on the screens I definitely busted the phone out.

One more stage shot from last night at Moonlight. Do any of the other bars allow photography? I was so surprised last night when they explicitly said you’re welcome to take pictures and even record video during the group round. Especially with that sign on the post in the middle that says no pictures. No photos or video were allowed during the performances though. Understandable.

Adventures of a Bangkok Rookie August 2026
Don't know any of their names but the standout after the performances was the last guy before the Foodland pic... the dude in the blue. There were about 5 or 6 guys I'd swipe right on but in terms of stage performance, his was top notch. It's my last night in Bangkok for this round. Off to Koh Samui tomorrow. Don't know if I'll make it to the bars... have tentative plans with both Grindr guys today. I never learn. 😆

Even metal music wouldn’t be enough to save that place for me. I’m gonna have PTSD for a while from those visits to Tawan. 😆

Adventures of a Bangkok Rookie August 2026
I mean number four is not that far behind. Number three just has more guys my type. Having guys just stand there looking miserable, just absolutely kills my mood. Every time. fortunately, they moved on and started the show and it got better. But yeah, moonlight was definitely in the upper half of my top 10. Just didn’t win the bronze.
