Comparing Bumrungrad with a hospital at Dachau is silly and offensive. I have always been happy with treatment at BNH, although as others have written, their prices have increased recently and while they were once a non profit making organisation, I believe that this has changed in the last few years.

Firstly, as Mark acknowledged, in the original case he had employees who were found to be on drugs, and he could not demonstrate any process of checking/discouraging drug use among his staff, and was therefore in breach of his responsibilities as owner. In the two years since he has implemented a policy of monitoring staff, and has therefore been complying with the law and has not had a problem. Secondly, as Mark was entitled to, he had his case tried in Court, which found him guilty, and decided on the punishment, not "the whim of the police".

I don't understand why this should be thought bizarre, or that the guidance is somehow inferior to Western practice. Employers have a duty of care to their employees, in Thailand as in the West. What is a reasonable standard of care is not clearly defined with absolute guidelines. The law is defined by common practice, and what would seem reasonable to the average person.

I think that you guys may be being over cautious. I have travelled in Eastern Europe recently, and there are number of Thai Massage places, staffed by ladies. That are completely legit(no extras). You should know that Thai Massage is appreciated the world over. I would suggest getting the name of the venue in which she will be working, if legit it will have a website, and you can get a good idea from that about the kind of place it is.

The subsequent investigation and it's findings are quoted by me and Gaybutton above, and were published in the press yesterday 9th November. I can't really understand the determination to deny the admission of the pimp himself, which is that offences against the child took place at Ben Mansions. Article in Pattaya Mail says that the Thai pimp in this case specifically states that he took the boy to have sex at Ben Mansions, and it sounds like with more than one guest pervert and on more than one occasion. Never quite understood why ReneThai was so insistent that this didn't happen. Middle Class Guys and Professional guys, in general, would not want to be seen in the Malaysia or Suriwong for example. They are the equivalent of short time rooms in a Motel. The access to these rooms in a motel in Thailand is usually concealed behind a curtain, so that you can drive right up to the door, and have the curtain pulled so that it conceals not only you but your car. It is a question of face, a concept that anyone living in Thailand for any period should understand.

The positive side of Joiner fees is that at least, at a small cost, you are allowed a member of the local population in your room. I can think of lots of countries where you aren't even allowed locals in your room, at any price.
