Go back to the airport to fly to Phnom Penh, Sky Anker line is a mile long but I’m early so it’s ok. Finally get to the front of the line “sorry, you can’t board, you don’t have a departure ticket. Ok, no problem, sell me a return ticket for a week from now. Sorry, no can, you have to do it on your phone and get in line again.” I kind of knew that an outbound ticket was required but I’d forgotten it so I practice my zen and then go back to the end of the line and start trying to buy a ticket on my phone. By the time I get back to the front of the line I have the ticket bought but the transaction won’t finalize. I show the counter agent the spinning hourglass on their website and she just sighs. “How much cash do you have on you?” Apparently if I can prove that I won’t be a burden to Cambodia she wont get in trouble for letting me on the plane. The $400 I had in USD and Baht caused her to sigh again, “Keep trying to buy ticket and show me at the gate.” She checks my luggage in and gives me a boarding pass. I get to the gate, ticket still isn’t ready so I cancel it and go on expedia and buy a refundable ticket that I can cancel after I get through immigration in Phnom Penh. Visa on arrival quick and easy, Cambodia also makes you preregister ahead of time like Thailand. No one ever checked the return ticket.
Arrive in Phnom Penh, take a grab car from the airport to my hotel. Am overwhelmed in a good and exciting way by the utter chaos and lack of traffic lights on the roads. When we get to the hotel in the Riverside Neighborhood I just break out into applause for the driver. He just laughs and holds up his hand and says “5stars” 
Nat had not seemed happy that I had booked a hotel in the Riverside Neighborhood, and had cautioned me about it. I had watched videos and it seemed fine, but I can see why a local might be a little embarrassed by some of it. I have never felt more handsome. The Harmony House was nice, with a rooftop pool and bar. My room had a cute balcony facing the street. Just beyond the hotel the street turns into a street market that I thought was cute until I was woke up at 5am to chickens and ducks being butchered. You gotta just laugh sometimes.

sure it's ok, after all you are paying but keep in mind some boys like shows in other bars but others don't enjoy those so don't be surprised if you will see some grimaces when you table proposal. But sure , even if they don't like they will accompany you.
Keep in mind if you take boy fort the show in another bar you will be paying for 2 drinks / admissions so it may be expensive option , even worse he may ask you to buy a drink for his friend who works in  that bar or horror of horrors , invite his friend for a drink without even asking you . Like Zombie said, be very clear about what you want...some guys are in a rush to get back to maybe have another off or just be back with their friends, our fun isn't always fun for them....and vice versa, what we liked in the bar might, you might not be feeling the same once they get offed. As far as payment, even when guys wherever mention per hour.... I say, per session. Thailand was always short time or long time.... short time was understood to be a couple of 2-4 hours and long time was to stay overnight and include morning sex too, even though, as told here many times, they'll come up with an excuse to leave early. I don't think I've ever hired for long time, because I prefer to sleep with both eyes closed and alone. I've had others ask if they could sleep with me for various reasons, they lived far, my place was better than their room, or they fell in love me 😝  In any case, if I felt ok with them and we had a good time, I'd say "don't worry, I won't charge you anything to stay here" that cuts them off from trying to up charge from a short to long time $tay.

I know people love throwing extra money at some, but with rates nearing 100 usd.... PLUS the fees/drinks/food... we need to keep these short/long time parameters in mind so expectations on both sides stay stable 😏

 

Your reply makes a lot of sense Vessey. I figured if these places were really opportunities for the gays, someone would have figured it out! I was assuming that they catered to a straight crowd. I didn’t even think of Thai women who might want a night out to flirt.

I can only really comment on Friendly Club that I know and love. Actually there are two of them now, the original on Soi Kapai and a sister one a couple of hundred metres away.  They are essentially Karaoke Bars, although not like the little intimate singing karaoke bars of old (maybe still are). THese are indeed more like host clubs with anything from 20-50 badged boys on stage on any one night. Most Karaoke boys are straight, but some can, to varying degrees, prove 'gay for pay'.
The badge numbers are essentially to identify them during the hourly call-downs (usually about 200 baht a time for each boy). Some places like Diamond Karaoke they can usually be offed (if they are willing of course) in other places (like Friendly) that has to be done by private negotiation with the boy when the places closes (5-6am?) as the mamasans will insist that they are only host bars.
I say, if they are willing, because gay customers are not the target clientel, it is ladies, often bar girls with money in their pockets from satisfying sweaty old farang like me during the day, out to party with pretty young Thai boys. (Again I would say that Diamond is as close to gay-friendly as I have found, its boss used to be one of the 'big cock boys' in X-Boys on Soi 13/3 until a few years ago and understands his gay cutomers).
I love these places but, being farang, I still feel more comfortable if I am bringing one or more Thai boys (offed from the bars) with me to party. Once the whisky is flowing these places can be huge fun, but they are not cheap; every boy you call down is 200 baht (or more ?) for an hour of partying (and usually flirting) with you. Some karaoke boys are happier flirting with a gay crowd than others - but usually always plenty of takers. If I bring two or three boys in with me, and get through one or two bottles of whisky, and calling down two or three boys to join us every hour for a few hours, a 'bin' of 6,000 baht or more is not uncommon.  So not an every-night thing unless you have deeper pockets than mine.
These are essentially Thai establishements aimed at Thai customers, but I have never yet been refused entry at one: baht is king!
