We're finishing a week in Puerto Vallarta, and while we were here, we ran into some casual acquaintances from a colder city in the US. They are fairly well-off financially. Since we've both been here many times (a dozen for my hubbie, and over 2 dozen times for me), we told them of one of our favorite restaurants, where we had dinner, the River Cafe. I was a bit embarrassed (but said nothing) to seem them in tank-tops (one is in his 30s, the other in his 50s). They enjoyed it, and my husband said that maybe the next day we could go to my personal favorite restaurant, Cafe des Artistes. They agreed. I then said that they have a smart casual dress code--the shirt should have a collar. They said that it would have to be some other year, since they did not bring one single shirt which had a collar, just tank-tops and one T-shirt. We ended up going to another restaurant we both liked, La Palapa, and this time they at least wore T-shirts. 

For myself, I can't imagine going on a trip without at least some polo shirts, or other shirts with collars. Is this a thing? Have any of you gone on a vacation, and not brought along a single shirt which had a collar?

Strangely this seems to be the fashion amongst the younger gay crowd nowadays

I'm noticing this a lot amongst the younger Sydney🌉 gay community 🏳️‍🌈 

Even going to gay night clubs they are wearing tank tops and shorts to show their muscles🏋️‍♂️ I guess 😳

I have a good gay younger friend who also wore one to a nice restaurant last weekend, he told me he paid $145 AUD for it 😳some designer tank top🎽

He did look nice though with shorts and a designer watch but I'm not sure why it's becoming fashion I personally don't like it 

 

 

I always have at least one shirt with a collar, not so much for restaurants but to go thru Immigration/Customs. I have a lot of tattoos and I've found I get received differently when they can see them vs not 😳 

They could have bought a shirt to use on the street somewhere for less than 10 bucks, no?

Do you know the Viet restaurant in PVR, Let's Pho PV.... Charlie, the owner,  has been a good friend of mine for ever.

I always travel with at least three short sleeved shirts with collar and two pockets which can ne either buttoned or velcroed.

If need arises,  I'd buy long sleeved shirt somewhere like rob suggested above.

PV is a beach resort town so I expect anything goes.  Many restaurants have an open air section spilling out onto the street.   While I do agree tank tops should be worn in the daytime only, I doubt there would be many eyebrows raised to see them on boys at night as well.  I feel about the same when I see people wearing shorts in a nice restaurant.....or the dreaded flip flop.

Well, Cafe des Artistes is definitely not on the beach. La Palapa does have a section of tables in the sand on the beach, so I suggested that one as the alternative to CdA. The youngest was well in his 30s, so I didn't consider either of them "boys." CdA has an "outdoor" garden area, but their dress code still applies. There are other nice restaurants with dress codes such as the Casa Kimberly restaurant, and maybe Tintoque. We might be seeing these two for Independence Day, to visit Saugatuck for our first time. Maybe in Saugatuck during the summer no places have a dress code, but I'll have plenty of button-down short-sleeved shirts and polo shirts nevertheless.

We did consider the buying a shirt tactic. We might try Pho PV on our next trip to PV. We'll probably skip PV next year, though, since in December (our usual month to travel there), we're taking our first cruise to Antarctica. 😃

It seems that I can’t quote and add a comment below the quote dialogue box if the quote had previous quotes embedded in it by that poster. All I could do was submit the quote that apparently then omitted the embedded quotes. See attached screenshot, simply representing the previous post that disabled any content beyond the quote.
