jason1975 Posted yesterday at 05:21 AM Author Posted yesterday at 05:21 AM Thank goodness I didn't plan a trip this weekend to meet my regular guy! On Thursday, the Thai government announced news on entry restrictions at its checkpoints with effect from next Monday 17 November to stop visa runs from illegal foreign workers. According to the news, repeated offenders might be prevented from entering Thailand permanently. First time offenders could be required to stay one night overseas before being allowed back into the country. My guy took immediate action once he found out the news. His visa expires in first week of December but he didn't want to risk any chance of being denied re-entry during a visa run when the new rules kick in so he immediately booked a ticket for Friday to Laos and back. Ever since the borders at Cambodia were closed, many Vietnamese had to do visa run to Laos. The trip takes about one day two-way. My guy left Silom at 11pm, reached Laos and got his passport stamped at 10.30am in morning. His new visa is until mid January 2026 so he can be in Bangkok for New Year and Christmas (with me!) without worrying about visa expiry! pong2, Enchanted_Elixir, zoomomancs and 1 other 4 Quote

It looks that they opened some window of opportunity your guy used - from what I read restrictions are on land crossing only although not 100% sure I read it correctly but if true, flights are still an option Quote

If he's been coming in and out of Thailand this past year using the 60-day visa exemption plus 30-day extension at Thai immigration, he will only get a 7-day extension upon application to tidy up his affairs before leaving according to the new rules. No more 30 days. Presumably he won't be allowed to come in again for another year. 🤷 According to one of my friends at immigration, nationalities and demographics with a dubious track record in Thailand for eg those involved in online scamming (Chinese?), using nominees to front businesses (Chinese, Israelis?) or those with a history of bad behaviour (Indians, Israelis?) will be subjected to the utmost scrutiny. zoomomancs and vinapu 2 Quote

My impression from the men working in bkk bars (I may be wrong) is that they never go near an immigration office for an extension and only do back to back 60 day visa exempts (VE) plus occasional trips back to their home country. As you say, I read that immigration offices are issuing far more 7 day extensions and refusing 30 day extensions for people doing VE all the time. mauRICE 1 Quote
jason1975 Posted 18 hours ago Author Posted 18 hours ago I've not known of any guy working in bar to ever request for extension. When their 60 days is close to ending, they do a visa run or go back to home country and return to Thailand a few days or weeks later. I know of waiters who are on long term work permits which their employers applied on their behalf. It will be extremely inconvenient for the guys in the bars to be unable to do visa runs. I read that the new rules only apply to land crossings. A friend of my regular guy will not be affected because he travels by air (thanks to wealthy regular customers!) I believe many guys in the bars are adopting a wait and see stance and crossing fingers to see how the rules are implemented. bkkmfj2648 and zoomomancs 2 Quote

The point of the new rules say that a visitor can't stay in Thailand longer than 90 days in any given year without a valid visa. The visa exemption is a grace offered by the Thai government to genuine travellers and tourists. It's not meant for employment. Coming in and out of Thailand and staying for 60 days each time, multiple times a year would certainly invite suspicion as to the visitor's motives. Incidentally, the original press statement released by the immigration department a few days ago did not discriminate between visitors coming by air and through land checkpoints. There are now rumours circulating that the visa exemption will now be reduced to 30 days for certain nationalities and we may hear about this in the coming week. It's a Sunday I don't want to bother my friends at immigration. They tell me they tend to get the news at the last minute most of the time anyway and with no clear guidelines on how to implement the new policies! bkkmfj2648 and vinapu 1 1 Quote

mauRICE Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago 37 minutes ago, jason1975 said: 30 days! Yes but at this point it's hearsay. I just heard another one from a Thai immigration lawyer friend: apparently it's now 60 + 30, exit, come back in, another 60 + 7, exit. Total of 157 days in any calendar year. I'd take it all with a bucketful salt for now until the Thai authorities come out with a clear and detailed explanation and even then... There's a lot of money to be lost if these multiple border bounces were to be curtailed and many unhappy pockets of powerful people. The guys in the nightlife industry have got it right: let's wait and see... vinapu 1 Quote
