indeed. Few weeks ago in broad daylight  I was almost ( perhaps less then 1 cm) hit by car on local intersection which is not really busy even in peak times. Driver was likely blinded by the sun.

Since I live where I do there were 2 gun murders in the building across from me. Considering that we are talking 35 years , it doesn't make my neighbourhood dangerous or gun infested so lets not extrapolate too far dangers at Saranrom.  AYOR of course applies but hat applies everywhere

Different prices for Farang and non-Thai Asian: Stickman put it that way, for lady bars, that non-Thai Asian are more likely to accept the first quoted price (which be an opening point for negotiation), whereas Whites are more like to negotiate.

I wouldn't call it a cruising place, it's a place of prostitution. Apart from incident in 2013 (analysis here https://christianpfc.blogspot.com/2024/08/dating-thai-boys-98-at-wrong-end-of.html) I consider it safe. I have taken 5 different boys over the last two years, two of them more than once. Details in my blog under gay activities of the month, or label street trade.

There is a short time hotel S hotel เสาชิงช้า nearby and I recommend taking the boy there. It's just 200 THB and if you take a boy back to your room, he would ask for 100 for taxi back. 

The area is now easy to reach with about 10 min walk from MRT Sanam Chai to Saphan Hok (Lifting Bridge) สะพานหก, which I would say is the center. The boys are along both sides of the canal north and south of the bridge.

Most speak little or no English. I once spotted a Chinese ? customer using translation on his phone. When they are in groups, probably one can speak some English and translate for the one you like. Keep in mind most boys are straight, which limits activities. 

Most customers come by car, however I prefer walking. It's busy from 8 pm on (which is different from 10 years ago, when it started 10 pm).

The tour guide on my recent trip said that while English is mandatory in the public schools, what they teach is written English, not spoken English.  If that is, in fact, the case, it should be the reverse.  They should focus more on conversation.

That is the same thing all over the world unfortunately, including in the US.

Language acquisition is how we gain the ability to speak, by…you guessed it, speaking.  But most school based instruction is vocabulary, grammar, verb conjugation.  You learned all of that from your family before you were able to read.

Language acquisition is really interesting.

Arguably, it would be more beneficial for more Thais to speak English, especially in the hospitality area. In the UK, two of my family are being taught Mandarin.

Here's a good chart that shows condom sizes frequently shown in Thai massage ads, with measurements in both centimeters and inches, and the corresponding penis circumference sizes.  

The measurements quoted by massage shops are the width of condoms, as shown in this chart in the condom width column.

I can attest that the Thai authorities do import teachers of English for short periods - athough how much good that does obviousy depends on the teachers and how they are selected. I only had one experience meeting up with one. I was at Siam Skytrain station about to visit Paragon. A large middle-aged (I guess) African American lady in a dress that was clearly too thick for the heat was looking around and clearly very confused.

I asked if I could help. Frankly, I found it a little difficult to understand that she was trying to find Paragon but she told me none of the staff seemed to understand her. I asked her to turn around as Paragon was just there. In thanking me she told me she was from Louisiana, it was her first visit to Thailand and she taught spoken English!! Turned out someone at her school in the US had asked for volunteers to spend theee months teaching in Thailand. She though it might be fun. She was clearly well-meaning but I felt sorry for the Thai kids who tried to decipher her very southern pronounciation.

One positive to learning English form a US Southerner is that they tend to speak slowly.  Also, the accented parts of words are more emphasized.  That might make it easier for a non English speaker to keep up.

Could be worse.  They could be recruiting from Northern Scotland.

Or try Thailand! There are some English words that the Thais are absolutely confident they are pronouncing correctly and it becomes embarrassing to correct them. And not just the usual accented Thai-glish. 
 

For example “model” which Moonlight premium guys are convinced they are, is pronounced “mo-delle” emphasis on second syllable. It took me a long time to understand what mamasan was pushing on me during my initial visits.
