I will be taking British airways overseas, and I have a 12 hour layover at Heathrow airport in London. Has anyone had such a long layover? If so, were you able to check your bags into either the airport are the lounge? What would you do in the city into such a short timeframe? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A Gallup poll shows that as his LGBT-friendly image slowly falls away, the Pope is quickly losing favor with the general public in the West. The percentage of Americans who see the Pope in a favorable light has dropped from 76 percent in February 2014, to just 59 percent this month. Meanwhile, there has been a sharp rise in those who disapprove of the Pope – from 9 percent to 16 percent. Among liberals his approval rating was down 14 points to 68 percent – while among conservatives it was down further, dropping 27 points to 45 percent. http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2015/07/25/popes-approval-rating-plummets-as-gay-friendly-image-wears-off/?utm_source=PNFB&utm_medium=so…

Special analysis of satellite data has all but conclusively shown that this aircraft is down in the far reaches of the Indian Ocean. Naturally there will continue to be extensive searches for the FDR and CVR aka black boxes. However, they will be very unlikely to reveal why this happened. It appears that the crew or one of them did accomplish this. Reaching into my own psyche the only thing remotely plausible is the captain was so distraught over the arrest of his "political hero" or some such that he decided to commit suicide and, further, rather than just dive into the sea, flew until the alternatives were exhausted, as was his fuel, and then suffered the consequen…

6 people who gathered to celebrate this year's Pride Parade were stabbed today. An orthodox Jew was arrested for the incident. He had just been released on parole for another Pride stabbing 10 years ago. Sad to see this is still so much hatred in the world. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3180270/Ultra-Orthodox-Jew-stabs-six-people-Jerusalem-Gay-Pride-march.html

I just got my invitation today. It must be used with a Motorola Nexus 6 which looks great. The rates are excellent and I love the fact that you can easily use your bandwidth overseas as well and for me, this is a true bonus. Has anyone else tried it? Got it? Used it? Like it?

Neat astronomical virtual-observatory web site: http://main.slooh.com ..."Slooh" a cute webification of "slew" the telescope into position to look at whatever. Nothing to do with slaying the telescope although you sometimes want to do that because you didn't balance it right and it keeps vibrating, or you just brought it out from the warm house into the cold and so thermal air currents in the tube are fucking up the seeing, or you dropped an eyepiece on the ground and can't find it, or the finder scope seems to be aligned approximately 90 degrees off from the main telescope, or...

I attended a fundraiser in Las Vegas recently for an organization that, among other projects, helps to keep Black young folks in school. http://www.palazzo.com/entertainment/events/topspin.html I was amazed at the music the DJ played during the main event. Lots of misogynistic, violence promoting, crap "Urban" music filled with obscene and filthy language. I wrote a note to the event coordinator regarding my take on this ( pandering to an incredibly low base while chasing folks who might help their charity ((me)) away with a bad impression of their charity. They are blaming the DJ-but they were paying the DJ and they were in the same room as I was-and have invited m…

I was getting a manicure/pedicure today and CNN was on and watched the president of Kenya say that gays were a "non-issue."

For those of us who do a fair amount of travel, the below cited article is bizarre. If a departing aircraft hadn't called for assistance because of being ignored, who knows what would have happened with incoming aircraft. Anyway, here is an the article on the at-work drunk ATC guy. http://5newsonline.com/2015/07/16/springdale-air-traffic-controller-arrested-on-suspicion-of-intoxication/

There are quite a few revelations and some strange photos aboard these airplanes - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/travel_news/article-3160900/Inside-secret-ONLINE-life-flight-attendant.html

Again, lacking a Nerd forum...I recall watching many Apollo launches narrated on TV by this man. See the video link embedded in the story for video of the Apollo 11 countdown. I logged into my IHG account today and got this message: Welcome to Spire Elite! A whole new level of benefits is yours to enjoy. Aparently, this is the new level and requires 75 nights a year to reach. That is a lot of nights in their hotels and while it does give you some benefits, the old Platinum level did the same and was less nights to maintain. Until I logged in today, I had enough nights acculumated for the next 3 years as I have over 150 nights available as roll over. Now, this new requirement rolls that back a year to 2 years of nights. I spoke to the hotel I am staying with and was told this does not effect the Ambassador program or their Royal Ambassador …
