  6. Metadata Not Anonymous at All, Stanford Researchers Show By Tom's Guide / Marshall Honorof11 hours ago If you're not concerned about government surveillance of your phone because the National Security Agency (NSA) only collects metadata, think again. A study from Stanford University shows that connecting "anonymous" metadata to compromising personal information is trivially easy. Documents leaked in June by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed that the organization was collecting metadata about calls placed to and from Verizon telephone lines. Although this revelation was potentially troubling, metadata collection is, in theory, not cause for concern. …

Keanu Reeves’ ‘47 Ronin’ Bombing: Universal Prepares for Major Loss By Dave McNary9 hours ago Universal Pictures has acknowledged that “47 Ronin” is a loser, disclosing that it’s taken the ususual step of writing down some if its $175 million cost prior to the current quarter. The samurai tentpole, starring Keanu Reeves, opened Christmas Day in the U.S. with a soft $7 million at 2,688 locations, finishing sixth. Internationally, the film has opened in 14 territories for a total of $10 million through Wednesday. Though the film’s opening two weeks ago in Japan was dire, it finished first in its Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan openings. More of…

  15. 14 TV Shows Likely to Get the Axe After this Season Thomas Mentel Google+ | More Articles December 23, 2013 Page 1 of 15 view all It’s not easy to avoid the chopping block when it comes to primetime television. Whether it’s a returning series or a new show, livelihood is purely a numbers game, and when the numbers go south, cancellation is not far behind. TV by the Numbers runs a series of articles outlining which shows from the major networks are trending downwards using what it calls the “Renew/Cancel Index” — a ratio that takes into account a show’s 18-49 age group ratings relative to the performance of other shows. Per the site, the specifics behind the…

This could come in quite handy. Cacography Cacography is deliberate comic misspelling, a type of humour similar to malapropism.[1][2] The term in the sense of "poor spelling, accentuation, and punctuation" is a semantic antonym to orthography,[3] and in the sense of "poor handwriting" it is an etymological antonym to the word calligraphy: cacography is from Greek κακός (kakos "bad") + γραφή (graphe "writing"). A common usage of cacography was to caricature illiterate speakers.[4] Russian internet The Russian internet culture witnessed an explosive growth of Russian language cacography of particular, systematic types, see articles Padonki and Udaff. One way of corru…

  18. December quiz: where were these pictures taken? During my travels, I came across an architectural element which is shown in all pictures. What is the name of this architectural element and where were these pictures taken (please be specific: town and place within this town). I have been to four places (A, B, C, D) myself, pictures with date and time stamp were taken by me. Where my pictures are of low quality, I use pictures from internet. I haven’t been to the fifth place E, pictures are from internet. In some cases, I edited the pictures. I will post links to the source for pictures from internet after the quiz is over. Sorry, there is no prize. Please w…

Anyone have favorite Christmas recipes to share? This is one of mine, an old-fashioned English recipe that makes a dense yellow fruited pound cake. Great holiday alternative if you don't like the dark batter and funny green things in traditional fruitcake. Gets better if you have the willpower to let it sit and age for at least a week. English Pound Cake 3 sticks butter 2+1/2 cups sugar 6 beaten eggs 1 tsp grated orange rind 1 tsp grated lemon rind 1 tsp lemon juice 1 tsp vanilla extract 4 cups plain flour 1+1/2 tsp baking powder 1+1/2 tsp mace 1 lb currants (macerated in brandy optional) Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, rind, juice, vanilla. Mix. Sift fl…

Alan Turing, mathematician, founding father of cybernetics and one of the leaders of the Bletchly Park team of code breakers that allowed the English to read German military communications during WWII, was pardoned this week by the British government for being queer. Turing, who was something of a naif in worldly matters and open about his sexuality, was robbed by a rent boy in 1952. When he reported the theft to his local constabulary, the coppers promptly prosecuted Turing for being homosexual. He was given a choice between years in prison or chemical castration. I've read somewhere that the chief constable responsible for the charge later regretted pursuing the matte…

Merry Christmas! The modern joys of Christmas past From singing carols to the blow-out feast, we would recognise, and enjoy, much of the medieval festival, says Dan Jones. A 1911 imagining of the medieval Christmas: while we owe much to the Victorians, feasting, decorating and dressing up have existed since the Middle Ages Photo: Mary Evans Picture Library By Dan Jones 8:25PM GMT 23 Dec 2012 The Telegraph Who invented Christmas? The usual answer you will hear is “The Victorians”, or if not that, then “Coca Cola”. Charles Dickens, Prince Albert and their fellows certainly gave us Ebenezer Scrooge, modern traditions including the Christmas tree and much-love…

  22. 'Consumer Reports' picks worst new car values Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY The Nissan Armada gets only 13 miles a gallon, has terrible scores on the reliability survey and costs $1.20 a mile to operate. It's that record that earned the big SUV and nine other vehicles spots on Consumer Reports' list of worst automotive values. While the magazine combed through its reviews and surveys to pick the nation's best, it also reserved a special place at the bottom for the worst in each automotive category. One little item of news that I believe remains a continuing stain on the British Government. Considered by most as the father of computer science, the brilliant British scientist Alan Turing also happened to be gay at a time when UK laws prohibited homosexuality. After reporting a break-in at his house in 1952, police discovered evidence of a sexual relationship with another man. He was charged with and found guilty of gross indecency, underwent a chemical castration as an alternative to prison, was stripped of his security clearance and unable to continue with his cryptological work. He soon spiraled into depression and ended his own life by ingesting cyanide in 1954…
