The Science Museum of London has thousands of objects covering more than 3,000 years of medical history. They include sex toys from years past. This hand-held electric vibrator is from 1909. All the items shown here are part of the museum's medical collections. The "Veedee" vibratory massager had two attachments. It is German and dates to between 1901 and 1930. Massage was considered an effective treatment for combating almost any ailment in the late 1800s, according to the museum's History of Medicine website. According to the museum website, the "Veedee" vibratory massager claimed to cure colds, digestive complaints and flatulence. It is believed that the name is …

We all know that Drop Dead Diva survived cancellation and the fifth season of the Lifetime series premieres this Sunday. But now that actor Ben Feldman (who played guardian angel Fred) has moved on to Mad Men, there’s a new celestial being to look out for Deb (Brooke Elliott), the sexy blonde who died and was sent back to live life in the body of a plus-sized lawyer. Justin Deeley joins the cast in the season premiere as Paul, and according to creator Josh Berman he’ll be more playful than seasoned, and (thankfully for us) he oftentimes won’t be wearing much clothing. I talked with Deeley and Berman on the Drop Dead Diva set in Atlanta earlier this month to learn a lit…

When Korean Airlines flight 007 from Anchorage to Seoul was shot down by the Russians short of Japanese air space in 1983, conspiracy theories were the order of the day. I remember having a drink in the Dickens Bar at the Excelsior Hotel in Hong Kong and sitting next to a pilot from South African Airways. That plane, he exclaimed, could only have been on a spying mission for the US. There was no other explanation for it to be so off course and to have flown the route it took. Flight 007, you’ll recall, was a B747 en route from JFK to Seoul via Anchorage. Soon after leaving Anchorage, it began to veer off course, missing at least six navigation beacons designed to assist …

When humans bring a dog into their lives, they are most often looking for a companion; what they may not realize is that they are getting a teacher as well.

Showtime has launched a new reality series about male escorts in Las Vegas. It follows five real guys earning their living as high-end male escorts in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, they are all straight male escorts catering only to women clientele. It's kind of lame but I'm enjoying it anyway. I guess it helps that I'm usually into the second glass of wine when I tune in. Here's a link to further info if you are interested: Gigolos

The recent murder of a British serviceman on the streets of London has thrown up one incident which I find interesting. When police in the US shoot at the perpetrators of crimes, we almost invariably read they are shot dead. When the two men responsible for the killing in London charged the police armed with knives and, as we have seen in a video, a gun, they were shot. However, instead of being shot dead, they were merely wounded and disabled. Both will therefore be available for extensive interrogation to find out how many others, if any, may be involved. A dead criminal takes his information to the grave. Why, I wonder, do US police forces generally shoot to ki…

Rather than continue a little off the "Tipping" thread topic when discussing airline fares, fees and taxes, I've started a new thread, for have come across another oddity. I mentioned in the tipping thread a possible trip i have to make to Chicago late next month. Whereas BA had one of the best prices on the net last week, this has now suddenly jumped a whopping 64% for all flights right through from July to October! My fault for not acting more quickly. However. I am going anyway to Helsinki in August. So I decided to check out prices to Chicago from there and just extend that trip by a few days. American has a non-stop flight in August (which seems to be discont…

CNN: James Gandolfini, 51, who won three Emmys for his portrayal of Tony Sprano on "The Sopranos", has died, according to HBO. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/james-gandolfini-dead-51-article-1.1377435 The Sopranos was a great series and I thought Gandolfini was perfect in that role. RIP

The UK has recently become totally consumed by a very nasty scandal about phone hacking. It started as a result of suspicions that the voicemail function on Prince William’s phone had been hacked some 6 years ago. A year later, it was discovered that “a vast number of public figures” had had their voicemail intercepted. The trail led the authorities to a private investigator who, it seems, had been hired by a Sunday tabloid newspaper, The News of the World (NoW). The paper’s royal editor was arrested; computer records, tapes and files were seized. As a result, both parties were jailed the following year. Then in 2007, prosecutors confirmed the hackings but identified …

AKA Prestwick (a Glascow area airport). At least they did not have to dump fuel in order to get down to landing weight. They were in the air for 4+ hours so had "normally" burned off enough fuel to land. It sounds like some kid wrote a note on a napkin and left it in the biffy, hopefully not realizing how serious the consequences might be. I am not sure how seriously I would take a note found which pretty obviously was written enroute. It takes a suicide prone individual to write a note and then carry out some nefarious scheme to bring the plane down but it takes all kinds and obviously it is likely better to err on the side of caution in these cases but it is expens…
