As a former high school teacher of English, now retired and lovin' it-- I admired my students visually but NEVER wished or desired to have them sexually. Back in the early 2000's-- I took two tours to some of Rio's famous favelas. If you are gung ho about touring in spite of the recent violence, contact Marcelo Armstrong, the man who began the tours to favelas a while back. ASK him or his assistant about the current atmosphere, and proceed from there.
I truly enjoyed his tours which you can read about in some of the valid travel guides. ...don't have his contact information at this date in time!
Also, I'd do the taxi thing from airport to my hotel if I were you. It's much easier. When I was doing Rio (11Xs to date)--I would pre-arrange at a kiosk in the airport, but on one or two occasions, I took a metered taxi and paid fare as well as tipped the drivers.
[Go to those fab gardens as well as that popular forest that's within the city. Try to have a companion if possible; it's more pleasant and fun that way!]
Lastly, in terms of money; check out the rate of exchange before going then you want feel too badly when folks ask for R$100 or upwards. This also goes for outside of the saunas.
Please report back when you get the chance. If you do this and wish to wait upon your return to Australia, a lovely country which is seared in my memory, for I spent two years there as an educator in some of the state schools quite a few years back.

To some of you who are debating as to which saunas to go to-- just go to "ALL" of them when you're there and make the most of the experience. I first went to Brazil (Rio de janeiro) in 2002 after getting the "heads up" from what had been posted at www.daddysreviews.com by Trilingual. At the time there were four or five saunas; I went to each one but liked three of that number. All are now defunct except from Club 117 and Point 2002.
It should NOT be difficult to decide. Just do a sauna hopping and select the ones to which you felt comfortable and met garotos of choice.
Also, remember that many of the garotos might be there during your visit and not when you return another year.
Also, remember that the nights vary: one night can be hopping, but when you return again, the place might be "dead as a door bell."
Also, remember that the seasons of the year affect attendance at the saunas. I've primarily gone during October, but when I went to Carnaval in 2003, it was summer; Club 117 and Point 2002 were busy most nights. New Meio Mundo had not come into the picture, or perhaps I had not been apprised of its existence.

There are three gay tour guides in Habana whom you can goggle. They claim that they do NOT participate in getting guys or making arrangements, but I have been told differently.

Thanks guys. I had good coverage for my stay as well as Cuban insurance. I just was NOT in the right mind to proceed and get medical attention for my excruciatingly back pain which I think happened from my sitting in that extremely hard-assed seat on the Hop on-Hop Off bus. I must have been on it for five hours; I never got off until it went to the stop the second time. ...would have braved it, but the tour was to have begun on a Monday carrying me long distances over 6 or more hours. ...did NOT think my back could handle this, for I did NOT know of the transport the tour company would be using!
I learned my lessons and thank you fellows for chiming in on this aspect. ...did NOT WANT TO HIjack this thread in my writing about insurance but thought I'd clarify!
