Just keep in mind that besides the terrible laws in Thailand that protect the image and the institution of the monarchy, there has also always been extreme social pressure to preserve, protect, and revere it.

Even when you go to see a movie, before the film starts theatres all play the King's anthem, and everyone stands in silence. To not stand would have always(?) been inconceivable.
