So we will see whether Krystal Ball has a crystal ball. To repeat, I agree with her analysis. It's the stroke, stupid. If true, it's ironic. In 2022 Democrats wanted Fetterman despite what was a pretty obvious health problem. Much like Republicans want AWOL Mitch right now. Fast forward and now we don't want him. And, if Ball is right, it's because of his health problems. Time will tell.

But I really don't see how that helps El Sayed win, or govern. I like the idea of someone like Schumer stroking Fetterman's back enough to keep the loose cannon from capsizing the whole ship. The Trump Party would love nothing more than to have Fetterman be THEIR loose cannon for the next two years. I hope the media just pound the shit out of the guy, like Breaking Points does. That is the issue again. The numbers. His stunt at Trumpalooza didn't help. It's as if he is bending over backwards to alienate Democrats. 😡 His swooning with Republicans doesn't make that much sense to me, if the idea is politics. I don't think Republican voters would rally to him in 2026 if he flipped sides. Particularly because on most issues he votes like a solid Democrat would. Again, GovTrack says he is more liberal than Rafael Warnock or Jon Ossoff or Gary Peters - three of the least liberal US Senators. My theory is this isn't about politics, or money. He's just saying, basically, "Fuck you. This is who I am, and what I believe. I'm right." Most politicians would argue that's not really good politics - at least most of the time. And knowing nothing about pre-2020 Fetterman, it's hard to know how much his depression and health issues are the cause of it. Mostly, I just hope he goes away. Part of why I feel conflicted is that he was the ONLY Democrat to flip a Senate seat from red to blue in 2022. So there is this aspect that no good deed goes unpunished. Do we want a Democratic majority, or not? Part of why I feel conflicted is that some part of me loves the fact that Fetterman wants to give Republicans and McCormick the respect they deserve. If I go back decades, especially to when I was most active with US Senators on Capitol Hill, that is how things tended to work. At least moreso than today. And I do miss it. That was definitely the Senate of Joe Biden. That said, if what I am saying is correct, he is kind of an anachronism. As was Biden. As am I, I guess. 🫢 It is definitely the age of silos and bitter partisanship. And while Trump is more symptom than cause, I blame it on Trump. His schtick is to barely win by dividing and conquering. It worked twice for Trump. But it's not good for America. Or even his party in the long run, I think. Check back with me in 2028. In my mind, I compare him to my disdain for Manchin. While Manchin argued that his centrism was sincere, it always seem to help line his pockets. And the pockets of family and cronies. Seriously? Granted, to quote El Sayed, the guy is kind of an asshole. But he is a Democratic asshole in a state where we just lost a Democratic Senator in the last election. This is worth stressing. A Democratic Senator almost lost in Michigan in a close call in 2024. That sitting Democratic Senator is seen as a moderate. A Democratic Senator almost lost in Nevada in a close call in 2024. That sitting Democratic Senator is seen as a moderate. Democratic Senators almost lost close calls in Wisconsin and Arizona in 2024. I'd tend to call Baldwin and Gallego progressives. It will be a minor miracle if Democrats win a Senate majority. Even Jesus could not win a Democratic majority in 2026 had we lost those four close calls I just outlined. We have a Republican Senate because we lost four states in 2024: West Virginia, Montana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. West Virginia is a lost cause. And he was such a royal asshole that I don't miss Joe Manchin at all. He stands for a Democratic Party of lobbyists that cuddle up to rich oligarchs like Manchin and his family. Casey losing in Pennsylvania in a very close race in 2024 was the only "swing state" Senate seat Republicans flipped in 2024. Given the choice between someone like El Sayed and Josh Shapiro, a liberal like me would take El Sayed any day of the week. But if it takes a moderate flip flopper like Shapiro who cuddled up to AI oligarchs and The Genocide Jew until it became toxic in order to win, I'm pragmatic. I'll take that over a Republican Senator. Partly because even with assholes like Manchin I'd rather have Democratic policies helping the working class rather than Republican policies enriching the Trump family. Fetterman himself is way more liberal than Raphael Warnock or John Ossoff, according to Govtrack's ideology ranking. His problem is he is bad at politics. And a depressed individual. He has almost invited the scorn of Democrats who missed the memo that certain Democratic excesses (cancel culture and unchecked extreme positions) helped put Trump back in power in 2024. Proof of concept of Democratic political malpractice is it does no good to win the Senate by one vote and then have Fetterman flip. He could do that anyway, which I doubt he will. It seems to me that with midterms it is either neutral, or even that polls underestimate Democratic strength. 2022 was expected to go badly for Democrats, and it didn't. In 2018 I was following a bunch of Senate races I was contributing too closely. And the polls were pretty accurate. McCaskill in Missouri and Heitkamp in North Dakota, among others, were doing okay in the polls until the whole Kavanaugh thing started. Which drove out the Testicle Vote in red states, but helped women in House races in blue districts. So it ain't over until it's over. But even without any more of a blue wave than we have right now, looks like we keep Georgia and Michigan and gain North Carolina, Ohio, Maine, and Alaska. That's technically enough. So Democrats don't need Texas or Iowa to have a majority. But if something that could be called a real blue wave develops, Iowa and Texas could go blue again, too. Kicking Ken Paxton and Ted Cruz in the balls would sure be sweet! And since Iowa really turned solid red due to Trump, and Texas has been solid red for a long time, getting a Democrat elected to the Senate in either or both states would be a clear sign that our piece of shit POTUS that could never win 50.000000001 % is just a miserable fucking loser! El-Sayed made an apology to the Michigan Jewish community at an annual event. The apology ("I'm sorry", verbatim) related to his saying "hurt people hurt people" when an angry Muslim who just had four relatives killed by the IDF in Lebanon decided to kill some Jews, and ended up committing suicide. Thankfully, he failed to kill Jews. El-Sayed condemned the attack at the time. But he apologized for adding "context." Whitmer got it right by being simple and blunt: "Yesterday's attack was anti-Semitism. It was hate, plain and simple. El Sayed saying "I'm sorry", directly, was a smart thing to do. Mike Rogers will still argue this Muslim is the incarnation of evil. Not that all Muslims are, of course. He will argue El-Sayed is a radical democratic socialist, even though one thing Abdul is clear about is his capitalism. As well as his oft-stated repudiation of anti-Semitism and concern for the safety as well as happiness of Jews in Michigan. The polls do not suggest the demonizing is working. In fact, they may be backfiring. It was smart for El-Sayed to apologize in the way he did. But I ain't holding my breath for Trump or Rogers or The Genocide Jew to apologize to Muslims in Michigan who lost loved ones.
