  6. A U.S. federal judge struck down Idaho's ban on gay marriage on Tuesday, saying it relegated same-sex couples to a second-class status in violation of constitutional guarantees of equal protection under the law. The ruling by U.S. Magistrate Judge Candy Dale was the latest in a string of decisions by federal judges against state bans on same-sex matrimony that, if upheld by higher courts, would sharply broaden access to marriage for U.S. gay couples. Dale said her decision would go into effect on Friday at 9 a.m. local time, unless put on hold by a higher court. Marriage rights have been extended to gay couples in 17 states and the District of Columbia in a trend that …

Given the nature of this group, I expect that many of you have long ago perfected the art of talking to hot guys. Unfortunately, I'm not there yet. The first five to ten minutes I can handle very well; small talk is no problem for me. But as the meeting goes on, I become extremely self-conscious. Somebody told me about the "Onion" technique where you start by bringing up topics relevant to the immediate situation. For example, at dinner, you might start by saying something about the clothes the person is wearing, then move outward to talking about the traffic, the decor of the restaurant, the part of town you're in, etc. before say, moving on to more personal topics. …

Now this is one where where even I can't write it off as anything but a big deal. Michael Sam is an All-American at a major football school (Missouri/SEC), likely to be drafted this May by an NFL team and a defensive lineman, for God's sake. One of those big hulking hyper aggressive types smash mouth types. http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/93526/michael-sam-says-hes-gay Some sources, citing various NFL team officials, are opining that being out will damage his draft prospects. http://nesn.com/2014/02/report-michael-sams-nfl-draft-stock-will-drop-after-announcing-he-is-gay/

If you're not familiar with the recent scandal, here's a link. http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/local&id=9531036 There have been other such scandals. I was thinking about it and nothing even close to a teacher suggesting cheating happened in my schooldays. What was the experience of others? Is this issue common?

Last night I read a long eye-opening article in last Sunday's NY TImes business section (yes, it takes me a week to finish the Sunday paper). It was about the whole business of producing and placing video ads on websites, and the billions of dollars involved in this activity; marketers are beginning to wonder if they are getting their money's worth. The theory is that the ads for products and services are targeted at the best potential customers, but the advertisers not only don't know whether they are reaching those customers, they are not even sure if the ads are being seen by anyone. Apparently, viewers of the sites purposely ignore the ads, or don't even notice they a…
