With Trump pulling out of talks on reopening the Straits of Hormuz, the jet fuel situation can only get worse. Some airlines have already increased fuel surchares. Cathay Pacific started this last month. Since April 1 there has been a second round of increases. All tickets irrespective of class now attract an additional 34% surcharge. A slightly bizarre situation whereby smugglers of cannabis, legal in Thailand, will only be fined if caught before departure from Thailand but will be imprisoned if caught on arrival in the destination country. The amount of smuggling to the UK perhaps partly explains why my Thai husband is regularly stopped for his bags to be searched at Heathrow. If we travel and walk together he tends not to be stopped.
