  1. Wow! I am very behind-the-times. I remember when the reason to own a telephone was to talk with someone who is not right there with you. I'll bet the first people to rush out to buy one of these are people who already own an iPhone. Blackberry, iPhone, GooglePhone . . . I can't keep up with it all. I don't even understand what some of the functions are for or why they would be included on a telephone. An accelerometer on a telephone? Why? What is the practical use of it? I think I need to take a course in this. For me, the title of the course might very well be: "Smartphones for the Dumb-ass." ______________________ Is Google Unveiling an 'iPhone Kille…

  2. Anti-gay laws sweeping through East Africa have sparked a debate in the United States about the possible influence of American evangelical leaders and lawmakers with strong ties in that region. U.S. activists are also shedding new light on the risks that gays face in East Africa. In his book called The Family, American journalist Jeff Sharlet criticizes a group of influential American Christian leaders and conservative lawmakers with close ties to politicians in East Africa. He accuses them of treating some of the countries they deal with as social and political experiments. "It has become sort of a Frankenstein's monster and is the family going to take responsibilit…

The US has lifted a 22-year immigration ban which has stopped anyone with HIV/Aids from entering the country. President Obama said the ban was not compatible with US plans to be a leader in the fight against the disease. The new rules come into force on Monday and the US plans to host a bi-annual global HIV/Aids summit for the first time in 2012. The ban was imposed at the height of a global panic about the disease at the end of the 1980s. It put the US in a group of just 12 countries, also including Libya and Saudi Arabia, that excluded anyone suffering from HIV/Aids. The BBC's Charles Scanlon, in Miami, says that improving treatments and evolving public perceptions…

  5. New Hampshire Now 5th State to Allow Same-Sex Marriage (CNN) -- After 19 years together Linda Murphy and Donna Swartwout tied the knot at 12:01 a.m. Friday, when New Hampshire's law legalizing same-sex marriage took effect. They were among several couples early Friday who married under a full moon on the steps of the New Hampshire Statehouse in Concord. At midnight, New Hampshire became the fifth state to allow same-sex couples to marry, joining Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts and Iowa. The couple, who live in Hudson, New Hampshire, said they wanted to be married as soon as they could. "We were thrilled and proud of New Hampshire ... it was a such …

  8. My initial reaction to this new technology was hope that it might prove to be the long awaited cure for HIV infection (and whatever else might ail us). Then I got to thinking. Folks, we have just sleepwalked across the Rubicon into the era of post-human and nobody's even talking about it. We now have a practical technical means to edit/alter/rewrite the human genome in precise detail, a biological equivilent of cut and paste. Anyone who thinks we can ring-fence this technolgy with a few laws passed by Congress is living in some other reality than I am. I'm just put out I won't live long enough to see what kind of weird world this technology gives birth to. No way thi…

Interesting article in today's New York Times - http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/29/science/29tier.html?emc=eta1 It starts - Apparently psychologists and behaviourable economists are starting to examine the impulse to put off to tomorrow what could be enjoyed today. For example, they analysed a group of people given gift certificates, Some expired in 2 - 3 weeks; others in 6 - 8 weeks. Those receiving the longer term certificates were more certain they would use them. Yet, in fact, they used less of them than those in the short term group. Equally, if you're determined to extract the maximum out of those frequent flyer miles, the greater the chance you'll end…

The Associated Press was at least half-right when it ran a headline, in 2001, saying Larry Kramer was dead. He was awfully close. Because he’d been sick for several years, many people who didn’t know him thought he had died already, presumably from AIDS. But AIDS, for so long his cause, was not Kramer’s problem. His long-standing HIV infection had never progressed, the virus perhaps having found that rare human host more ornery than itself. Rather, he had end-stage liver disease, the result of a hepatitis B infection contracted decades earlier. His partner, David Webster, an architect and designer, kept him as comfortable and hopeful as possible in their Greenwich Villag…

Brilliant and Beautiful and Boring! Really not my kind of film so I am not being totally fair here.IMO it was too long by half. Make sure you see it in a theatre that is set up to handle 3d-and if anything is wrong let the theatre know about it. The logistics of the distribution of this film are giving the studio migraines.

The U.S. Justice Department is closely monitoring the fallout from an apparent anti-gay killing in Puerto Rico in an incident that could become the first prosecuted case under the new federal hate crimes law, according to a department official. Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s civil rights division, told reporters Dec. 17 that federal officials are keeping a close eye on the case. “That case is being investigated and prosecuted right now by the state of Puerto Rico as both a murder, and they do have a hate crimes law in Puerto Rico, so we’re closely monitoring that case, as we do all cases, and we continue to follow that case very cl…

According to the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin, the alleged incident happened in 2007 at a family barbecue. The father, who cannot be named, was said to have phoned a sex worker and arranged to meet her at a motel on Yaamba Road, North Rockhampton.
