Those apps that are blocked in Indonesia (i.e. most gay dating apps) won't display any Indonesian profiles when you use their explore option from outside Indonesia. This is done for local people's safety: the fact that apps are banned/heavily restricted there is a sign of persecution, and showing local profiles even in explorer mode exposes the locals to extra risk. When you are over there physically, the local profiles will be displayed but most likely, you won't be able to take any screenshots and distance won't be showing either (other than that, the apps will work normally). Again, it is done to ensure safety of the locals who are online. For the apps to work normally, all you need to do is to install a VPN app on your phone. Locals @ Bali prefer Betternet (or, at least, they used to 3-4 years ago) but there are many other apps of a similar nature. You don't need to have a paid version of a VPN app either - just a bog-standard free version will suffice. You need to install a VPN app, activate it and only after that open Grindr or any dating app - and it will work normally (regardless of whether you are using WiFi or mobile signal) apart from, most probably, not displaying the distance to the profile.

    Hope it helps!

Perfect summary, thanks. I had no idea things were like that in Bali. Sounds easy enough to get around, just means I can’t snoop at a distance to check out the talent

Apps do work there very well - provided you use VPN (most of them won't work without VPN) and could be very useful.

Could you elaborate on the app situation? I just tried to look at Kuta using the explore option on Grindr and it shows no profiles at all. Are people in Bali visible when you’re there if you use a vpn?

  3. I’ve stayed in Shinjuku before but was traveling with a friend and didn’t partake of any of the gay offerings. I didn’t actually even know Shinjuku had a red light district, Japan keeps things pretty well hidden unless you know what to look for.

I stayed in two hotels. Hotel Sunroute Plaza in Shinjuku was fine and fairly cheap but the pillows reminded me of bags of cement - odd lumpy things. Second was a business hotel above the train station (can’t remember the exact name) and it was much nicer and more comfortable but also more expensive. So if you pick a hotel aimed at locals you may find things a bit different. Just something to keep in mind if you haven’t been to Japan before.

It is not too good to be true, I used them a lot when I was in Japan, it is exactly as the “rules” page or the “system” page on their website specify.

Thanks, always good to hear from people with experience. I’m hoping to visit Japan again later next year. Very keen to try one of these places.

This is a useful thread for me. I live in Japan and thus have always had yen to exchange.

Side question if you don’t mind…disregard if you’d rather not answer.

Japan seems to have lots of male prostitutes and the prices I’ve seen online look pretty reasonable. Do you have experience with them? How do the Japanese guys compare to Thai guys?

I find myself in a similar situation as you do (small city), my tatses are very simple, my #1 preference is for Asian guys and where I live there are very few gay or bi Asians here and those that are prefer guys closer to their age. Looking at the apps there really isn't much at all in my area that takes my interest and not a lot on offer anyway, maybe I'm just too picky. Maybe if there was a good Asian masseur in Perth that offered full service I would visit there more often. It all makes my trips to Thailand more enjoyable and I am very much looking forward to my 2023 trip.

I feel your pain. I’d love to go back, thinking of January, but money is tighter thanks to rate rises and the cost of flights these days.

  7. Based on that video, I don’t really see much special about the models. Floor boys were more interesting when I visited and I’m betting they still would be for me. I also still think Babe is the cutest

    Ohhh I didnt know that.

I was planning to visit these two places.

How does the whole scene work in resorts settings? Same, except for pricier accommodations?

By all accounts, there isn’t much of a scene in those places. Some people find a guy they like and take him with them though. Others can comment on the logistics of that if it sounds appealing.

I have been to Tokyo and a few other cities several times. I only once used a host bar with the boy coming to my hotel. It was a very pleasant experience. The boy was great, did everything as outlined by the bar, but the rules meant it was not quite as free wheeling as in Thailand.

Lastly the eye candy in Japanese cities is outstanding.

Thanks for the details! The limitations were partly what I was curious about as the site has a lot of guys labeled straight with no top or bottom tag, so what they were actually willing to do was a bit vague. I’ve been to Japan once and completely agree about eye candy. Everyone is immaculately dressed and thin. I felt very out of place tbh.

I haven't used the one pictured above, but I have used a couple of similar services in Tokyo and Osaka. It was pretty straight forward.

You go to the website, choose the guy, email them in English and they will response. If you want to visit them, they will tell you a location to wait (usually a 7 Eleven or gas station close to a metro station) and the boy will come and pick you up. The site will depict how much is for each type of service (they call it course) and what the boy will do (top, bottom or massage only). Kind of like going to a restaurant you choose the number of courses and then the protein:-)

They typically have a predefined course of action when you meet up. Confirm the time, shower with you, massage, loosen you up, and penetrate. They communicate with phone translation app. Comparing to what I experienced in Bangkok, I am actually pretty happy with the service I received in Japan, but of course the price is a bit more than double.

I am actually surprised that there is not a subforum for Japan and Korea.

Thanks for the extra info, as I said above the site seemed a bit vague on what limits they had beyond top or bottom. I completely agree it’s surprising there isn’t more talk about it. I didn’t think they were expensive, quick conversions suggest they’re way cheaper than what’s asked for here locally.

I think you underestimate the Japanese porn industry. It is huge and represents a reasonable proportion of GDP. Visitors to Japan rarely see it, though, apart from the huge number of love hotels dotted around the country with the oddest themes both architecturally and in the rooms.

You can tell that all the boys work at the site I posted if only because in another part of the site it states precisely when they are available. Some of the guys are students and so naturally are not available during the day. Other may have part-time jobs and also have limited availability. Some others may only be available at the week-end. Others will be taking part in porn movies and so might be off for a week or two. This screen shot lists some of the many dozens available today.

But the example I cited is from one of two Tokyo host bars under the same management. There are quite several more which is perhaps not surprising given that greater Tokyo is the largest city in the world with 37 million inhabitants!

Do you have much experience with these agencies Peter? I haven’t seen people talking  about Japan much on here before which seems odd given the quantity of guys apparently available there.

    Hey Wynter,

The Raya is on my list to check out, as is the Tarntawan. I ended up booking LM for my trip in May but plan on checking these 2 hotels out while I'm there.

    Thanks!

Meanwhile I’m hoping to try LM on my next trip depending on length of time, coz it would need to be a short stay to fit into budget. I’d stay in Raya again happily, just ask if they’re doing renovations and request a room away from that. Was quite noisey fairly early in the morning while I was there.

    they dont bother joiners right?

Nope. They couldn’t care less. There is a doorman at nights who is unlikely to look up from his phone. Reception is upstairs and you will only have to walk past it if your room is on that floor but from other’s comments I’d say it’s highly unlikely they will care either.

Le Meridien is an amazing option, however now I'm going 5 times a year to BKK ... it does start draining my resources.

Never had an issue at LM bringing back (multiple) boys, not even being asked any ID.

LM is my place to be, just looking elsewhere to cut some costs

Have you tried The Raya? Very large rooms, not as polished I’m sure but a fraction of the cost and comfortable.

He is the twink who left Moonlight recently.

He was a leading dancer of the twink shows.

That’s the one o was thinking of. Oh well, at least he’s still around. I had high hopes for seeing him on my next trip.

LOL "readers". Makes me feel like an author of a serial in a newspaper. My reward for writing these reports is reaped years from now, when I re-read the reports with a fond reminiscing of my fun. It it always great to reminded of what I did, and it informs what I want to do in future trips.

Quite the travel writer, I’d say. Your reports have a reflective quality that is engaging because it makes the events more personal and authentic. I like the little side stops at bars or the times where you just wanted time out just as much as the hijinks in bars asking the floor boys to split into tops and everythings.

Do you write similar reports for your S. American trips? I’d be intrigued to see the same lens applied there. I’ve had a couple of experiences with Latino guys passing through my home town so I understand what you mean when you say they’re of a different kind to Bangkok guys.

  16. Glad to hear you found someone you liked. You seem to trust your instincts which is important, I think.

Also excited to hear the new dreamboys has a good atmosphere. The old twilight version was the first bar I visited and I liked it a lot (except for the drag queen show). My own limited experiences back in January were that Moonlight had the best looking guys but they were very wooden on stage.
