If you're looking for something to do this weekend and still have the option, seeing Godzilla minus 1 IN A THEATER is probably WORTH IT! If you're bored out of your mind but too lazy to leave the house... Zach Snyder's Star Wars (and Seven Samurai and 5 other better movies), Rebel Moon... is visually interesting. Basically combine the disappointments of Valerian, Jupiter Ascending, and John Carter of Mars, though better than maybe all three of those movies. But for fuck's sake stop letting Zach have any input into writing or the story!

I saw both Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon in a theater without any issue. And for both there was something to be said for the experience of seeing it in a theater exactly as intended. Unfortunately there are fewer and fewer people who can go any length of time without checking their cell phone (or apparently having to potty though that wouldn't annoy me that much--sit towards the aisle if you have issues...) so I'm not sure it's going to last especially for auteur movies like these (Oppy's success was probably a fluke).

Torn on this, Israel was going ever more to the right, more settlers, more oppression, no sign it might ever get better, I can understand seeing no other option than something violent. If this topples Netanyahu maybe it did accomplish something...? But the atrocities committed by Hamas will have the effect of making everything so very much worse for Palestinians. And Hamas doesn't care. In fact their hope is for unchecked atrocities to be returned in kind. Keep the cycle going, more grist for the mill.

That every single claim by MAGAs is painfully obvious PROJECTION and that for a gay man to support them in any way will end exactly as it has for every other group/person in the "Can't believe leopards ate MY face" party? So, just like the trailer portends, the VFX in the movie are fucking gorgeous. (Except maybe that the size/altitude/position of NOMAD seems random.) But so much else about the movie is just fucking dumb. The worst is that it really has nothing to say about AI or anything in general. It's just a big popcorn war movie and the AI may as well be Vietnamese or anybody else. Alison Janney (CJ Craig in West Wing) is horribly miscast as a tough-as-nails colonel. I mean, she wasn't believable as chief of staff in WW certainly not as a KILL THEM ALL badass soldier! TWICE in the movie random animals do exactly what the protagonist needs, once against the AI once for it. Why? The cutesy ice cream scene in the trailer and movie... they NEVER establish that the simulants eat. TWICE in the movie a US soldier is shot in the back with something substantial. Oh well, may as well ignore it... (20 seconds later) starts beeping... OH SHIT OH SHIT GET IT OFF GET IT OFF (fails, 'splodes). It's just not very good, which is a shame because it had all the building blocks to be amazing. I may still see it a second time, the visuals are that good. But I'll have a couple drinks first and A LOT of drinks after so I don't try to think about it any more!
