Olympics and Brazil

that case answers OP question quite eloquently

That to me speaks volume about safety in Rio.

Question in mind, isn't it a discipline problem for leaving the participants' village without security escorts?

I mean don't they have to be "escorted:" outside their own "villages"?

I am surprised it has not happened more or maybe not being reported.  In as strange way it is the Olympics that has created the large increase in crime.  Crooked IOC and the crooked government of Brazil took the money that provides support to the general population especially the poor.

They built useless stadiums etc and lined their own pockets with the money which was meant for the poor.

It is the reason why the Olympics should never go to a country with a 3rd world economy.

It will be interesting to see the city selected for 2024.

Just for a little balance for the people who will want to say Thailand is the safest tourist destination in the world.

I happen to feel very safe in Thailand but I am rarely out at 3am in the morning and I never go to locations I am not familiar with at night.

No  matter where you visit there are certain precautions you should take . If you don't the odds are still overwhelming  in your favor  that you won't be robbed, attacked etc.  But?

this would be a stretch , while crime level is low , road safety record is one of the worst in the world so I'd say , 'safe', may be even 'very safe' but certainly not ' one of the safest'

Did you leave out "just kidding" in his post on purpose?

considering that my first ever arrival in New York was  back in 1988 and it was late evening 11.p.m. arrival by train to Grand Central answer is 'no' .

Mind you , it was well before Giuliiani, perhaps it was not that dangerous but it looked outright scary.

I realize now it's different environment but we never  forget our first time, do we?

Where were your complaints about Cuba, Mexico (recent) etc. In fact I have posted numerous trip reports from my travels all over the world with photos and based on responses and # of views I would have to assume lots of members enjoyed those posts.

Unfortunately there is no Forum for other countries ( other then Asia) so it falls into the Main Forum.

Take it up with the owner or buy your own website!

Just a lot easier not to click on the subject if it does not interest you?

To be fair I also made this point about one of your posts.

You are entitled to your opinion. I will continue to write trip reports for places I visit etc until I see that nobody views them or makes positive comments .

Just because this site is called Gay Thailand does not mean that there is not interest in other parts of the world .  Most of the members here travel to other places , some to do with Sex and some because they have the finances and desire to see other parts of the world.

There are posts here that I have absolutely no interest in and I simply do not click on them .  I would never think to tell someone they are not allowed to post them.  Maybe the owner could do that but neither I or any other member has that right.

I may comment on them negatively but I don't think I ever told someone they had no right to start the topic.

I am not referring to you . I am referring to you leaving out the "Just Kidding that Michael had in his post which of course completely changes what Michael said and makes your response non responsive to what he said.  Just saying!

I agree with you.  The most threads, the most posts, the better is the site.  And with a descriptive title, anyone can choose to read a thread or not.

It appears from various media sources that there has been quite a bit of street crime encountered at the games. In this sense I have a really hard time believing that Brasil is evenly remotely as safe as Thailand.

I never said that you did. I was just making an observation about the reports coming in that crime has been pretty much endemic. Also another observation I could make is the price gouging and over all incompetence levels appear to be greater than Thailand.

Not sure about price gouging. If you mean during the Olympics. That sort of thing happens all over World during Big Events.

Hotel prices have always been high . I would not consider it price gouging since they are full most of the time.

Incompetence?  Maybe depending in what way but you would be hard pressed to find more incompetent police etc then in Thailand.

I have run a public pool in Laos. The diving pool is fiasco is a pretty good indication of outright incompetence when I am able to run a pool without sophisticated computers and train Lao people to keep it clean. It was pretty obvious that it went green because of lack of chlorine and/or a PH imbalance.

This is easy stuff and it took them 3 or 4 days to drain that swamp because they still couldn't fix the water.

When one of your main events centers around swimming pools this is called incompetence. It happened to two pools and not just one. They had to do something for the synchro swimming.

This picture is incompetence of an Olympic level

It costs less than $1,000 dollars of chlorine and that is generous. Literally.  I am not saying don't go there but you asked the question why people from here don't. I an estimate how much chlorine it would take by volume to keep the pool clear. I have a pretty large pool and can just multiply this by cubic meters. They ran out of money doesn't hold water when you host an event of this magnitude. Getting the pumps to drain the pools and the electric would cost more.

You are talking to a person that runs a pool at times for his livelihood. I use a $3 test kit and based upon the result I could tell you in around 30 seconds it was algae in the pool. What else would it be. This is kindergarten level science.

Here is a picture of the  stands. This has been one of the worse games riddled by scandals in modern history.

At least the Thais took home some medals I watched them win at Tae Kwon Do last night on soi twilight.

My estimate of cost for chlorine incidentally would be for an entire month and that would be at retail prices. The government could get this free and would have access to municipal water as well, it isn't a stellar effort and there are no excuses for it.

Decided that I didn't want to be constrained by the schedule and agenda of the television network here in the USA (NBC), so I watched almost everything on an iPad app.  It also had the advantage of not having to listen to the expert commentators tell me how much they knew.  Very enjoyable so far.

Agree with Ryanasia regarding the pool chemicals.  I suspect some one told some one else to make sure the appropriate ones were added and never checked - so extra chemicals added, none added, or wrong ones.

Once it went green unless you add shock chlorine you would have to drain it. To clear a pool that green takes 3 days with mega filtration. Again i run a public pool and this is simply shameful I would close my pool under these conditions to clear it up. I certainly wouldn't be holding televised diving events in it. There is no excuse.

They have a lot bigger problem then that .   Boat races etc were held in polluted waters . If anyone fell in it would have been a problem. Again no money!

Like most big events there is a lot of BS. Now we see the swimmers from the USA are a bunch of liars and they were never attacked so all and all safety has been ok for people attending the  events. At least so far!
